NEW YORK – A solution to the world’s urban transportation problems could lie in two wheels not four, according to executives for General Motors Corp. and Segway Inc.

The companies announced Tuesday that they are working together to develop a two-wheeled, two-seat electric vehicle designed to be a fast, safe, inexpensive and clean alternative to traditional cars and trucks for cities across the world.

#57 Um, Mike, the bats in the EV1, with much less advanced tech, lasted about 5 years. Really, where do you get this stuff? Do you just make it up as you go along?

#59 We are all ready in the ‘post-affluent America;’ nothing like a 1.5 quadrillion dollar derivatives fraud to destroy an economy. But don’t worry. Thanks to the bailouts, you’ll have plenty of rich bankers left to stomp on your face a bit. They might even let you lick their boots every once in a while, since you like it so much.

#52, Dallas, Oh yes, I agree, but what fun is that? I can get on a 2 wheeled vehicle right now and get from Plano to Highland Park in just a few minutes. Very fast at 03:00 if there’s no black and white around, and carry a passenger too.

I certainly can’t use one of these to go 8 blocks to home despot and get some lumber, now can I? Geez, I can’t even carry 8 bags of groceries. A golf cart will do that.

Just wait for a computer failure in that POS.

  3. Dallas says:

63# agreed. I owned a Kawasaki when I was 23 or so and know the fun. But! A motorcycle is not for everyone.
So far, the objections are: ugly, too small, pos, will break down and something a motorcycle is better. The reality is this is the perfect one person people mover for urban use – just as advertised!

It’s in the link you posted. The buyers LEASE the batteries for $1600 a month.

  5. Li says:

“customers will lease the lithium-ion batteries for about $160 per month” Not 1600. But don’t you see, this is a good thing?

That way you don’t have to replace them when their time is up, they are simply on lease. The old ones are taken back and recycled, and then you get something fresh. The batteries make up a large part of the price of an electric car, since electric motors are fairly cheap, and dividing of the vehicle payment agreement into two parts (the chassis and the batteries) allows for reducing the overall cost to the customer considerably if they choose to keep the vehicle for many years. It’s actually kind of brilliant, and if you weren’t making decimal errors it would be easier to see.

  6. Toxic Asshead says:

These would be good for successful people to get from one side of their property to the other, or even indoors to get around the mansion. Kinda useless for the rest of us though.

    Here’s your new “green” turd!
