President Obama will speak at Notre Dame’s commencement on May 17. That is an honor to some, but an outrage to others.
Some alumni have called the campus saying they have thrown away their Fighting Irish sweatshirts in disgust. The local bishop, John D’Arcy, has vowed to boycott the graduation ceremony. A visiting high school senior, Halley Chavey, who said she was thrilled just weeks ago to be accepted here, said she might reject the offer because the college was hosting “the most pro-abortion president we’ve ever had…”
“Most of us are like, ‘Wow, the president of the United States is coming,’ ” said Brett Ensor, a Texas native who belongs to the Knights of Columbus, opposes abortion and voted for Mr. Obama’s Republican opponent, Senator John McCain. “What college wouldn’t want Obama to come? This is a tremendous honor for us…”
Notre Dame is regarded as an academic powerhouse and conservative Catholic bastion. But in a mock election here in November, Mr. Obama defeated Mr. McCain among students by about 11 percentage points. He won roughly the same margin of victory among Catholic voters in the national election…
In the view of the Rev. Richard McBrien, a prominent liberal theologian at Notre Dame, the commotion over Mr. Obama centers not on faith, but on politics.
“This crowd,” Mr. McBrien said, referring to conservative Catholics, “are simply Republicans who are upset that Obama won the election — and they want to pick a fight.”
Pretty accurate characterization of American Catholics in the article. Including their divergence from monocultural obedience as required by the Vatican.

The only news-worthy part of this is how the Left demonstrates their double standards.
A famous national politician graduated from my Catholic high school. The school denied him the opportunity to speak, because he was pro-choice.
It’s called ‘integrity.’
Because, a school like Hampshire or Evergreen or Smith tooootally would have let Bush speak on campus – I mean, he’s the president!
Why would Obama want to speak at a Catholic school? He’s made it clear that his choice of Church was made for entirely political reasons.
Many people in the South Bend area have only disdain for Notre Dame. It is usually seen as the “rich boy’s school”. The only blacks on campus are automatically thought to be on athletic scholarship.
Since Notre Dame sports are the only ticket in town though, the school does have a lot of pull with the local media.
“Abortion is central to the faith,” she said, “It’s a nonnegotiable issue.”
Abortion is central to the faith. What a statement. Forget about all the things Jesus said about healing the sick and feeding the poor.
Jesus never said a word about abortion, and here it is the center of their faith.
What a pathetic excuse for a religion.
Is there a web site we can go to and read the comments that were deleted??

The minority Catholic radicals (shown above using underage children for propaganda) is allowed to protest but should not prevent the majority of the student body have the US president speak at their commencement.
#8 – why not read the publishing guidelines for this site, first?
What kind of university agonizes over the commencement address being delivered by the President of the United States?
If you answered people who oppose a President
who advocates the extreme infanticide position of 4th trimester abortions – you’d be correct.
Shouldn’t a Catholic University have a different mission than a regular university, a Catholic character? This isn’t just having him speak on campus, which is part of free discussion that the Left likes to stifle. This is about honoring someone who promotes abortion, which is against the Catholic faith. Doesn’t this send the wrong message to students, and make Notre Dame just another college?
#10, what? actually read what other’s write? You mean, like leave my popcycle stand unattended why I write about saving the world?
As someone who was raised Catholic and a lifelong Indiana resident I have to say that Notre Dame is pretty much the epitome of isolated elite snobs. They do everything they can to separate themselves from the town of South Bend. They have made themselves a defacto town of their own. Even their mailing address is “Notre Dame” not South Bend.
#10 – Har. I thought steve s. had that name copyrighted. 🙂
OK, now, back to the sacred writes.
I’m willing to bet that there are many fine State Universities who’s students would show up with a lot more people and much more creative protests if the current Pope was to come campus try to deliver the commencement address. I know mine alma mater would.
This every sperm is sacred thing those true believers(The condition of continuing to believe a event/phenomenon after it has been debunked) love is one of the dividing arguments that will always be with us. no Pope or President will ever be able to stop people from protesting.
Meh, who cares what these elite “holy” deutsch bags think.
@#9: “The minority Catholic radicals ” Catholic faith is not democracy or even free for interpretation. Statutes for who and how is right or wrong are strictly defined within the church hierarchy. If you want such flexibility, do join any Protestant Christianity group. But you cant claim to be Catholic and open Pope’s interpretation of the Bible to any discussion.

What the heck is a 4th trimester?
Good grief.
I have to ask, what exactly did Paddy-O’s comment violate? There was nothing derogatory nor inflammatory about his comment. Maybe it’s his questioning of what appears to be the editor’s blind double standard?
Paddy-O’s comment has merit because it illustrated how there are those who flip-flop their criticisms depending on who’s in the White House.
This is almost approaching Wikipedia-like censoring.
Heck, my post #2 is probably more inflammatory. Have a little backbone.
Are these the same persons with the Bumper stickers “WWJD” and that funny Skinless FISH??
PRACTICE what you preach..
#20 I had it happen when one editor said it was hypocritical of conservatives to want a portion of money back that they had taken from them by the gov’t.
I pointed out the ridiculousness of that comment and it was deleted.
Pretty funny…
Lefties protest a commencement speaker.

Maybe that’s one of Prof. Singer’s preferred abortions. The Princeton Chair of Bioethics advocates allowing parents to kill their children after birth if they have birth defects, as well as using them to provide organs for elder siblings.
Wait, I thought that the Catholics in this country were firmly in the Democratic voting bloc and supporters of Obama.
#17, I would think they are more Irish than German.

You mean like when Jesus trashed a temple when it was used by merchants? What do you think he’d do when faced by someone who didn’t mind and allowed the killing of babies ready to be born? Something to think about…

I can only assume a 4th trimester abortion is when you abort a baby thats already been born.
As long as they can’t even properly pronounce the name of their university, I could care less about them.
“Wait, I thought that the Catholics in this country were firmly in the Democratic voting bloc and supporters of Obama.”
That hasn’t been the case since the 50’s, man. Ever since Roe v. Wade all the religious folk have switched over to the right. (Sort of. The problem stems from American politics not actually just being left/right. But the point remains – religious = republican, more often than not.)
Isn’t 4th [tri]mester abortion infanticide?
When exactly has Obama stated that he is in favor of overturning statutes against infanticide?!
Single-issue partisans are the least useful of all.

We don’t know, Paddy O’Troll, because he never said anything about it. He did say plenty about other things… bless those who curse you, turn the other cheek, etc… that you right-wing wackos conveniently ignore. He actually spoke out against divorce, so you’d think right-wing wackos would be calling for the death penalty for divorce. But no. Ignore everything he said that’s inconvenient for you, and focus on one issue that he never talked about. Yeah, that’s the Jesus “followers” for ya…
