Times Online – March 29, 2009:

A STEM cell therapy offering “natural” breast enlargement is to be made available to British women for the first time.

The treatment could boost cup size while reducing stomach fat. It involves extracting stem cells from spare fat on the stomach or thighs and growing them in a woman’s breasts. An increase of one cup size is likely, with the potential for larger gains as the technique improves.

A trial has already started in Britain to use stem cells to repair the breasts of women who have had cancerous lumps removed. A separate project is understood to be the first in Britain to use the new technique on healthy women seeking breast enlargement.

“This is a very exciting advance in breast surgery,” said Mokbel. “They [breasts treated with stem cells] feel more natural because this tissue has the same softness as the rest of the breast.” He said the treatment offered the potential of considerable improvement on implants: “Implants are a foreign body. They are associated with long-term complications and require replacement. They can also leak and cause scarring.”

Although the stem cell technique will restore volume, it will not provide firmness and uplift.

  1. Robart says:

I wonder how many men just dropped their opposition to stem cell research. We are so shallow.

  2. Dallas says:

    Hmmm…
If a stem cell paste can give cars a shinier, tougher look, then we are in business!

Good lord moron, it doesn’t come from embryos… i know, i know your snarking but jeez…

  4. Petrov says:

Good news for breast cancer patients!

  5. LibertyLover says:

I’ll be the first to admit I know very little to nothing about the technical details of stem cell/gene therapy so this next question may seem a bit dumb.

Does stem cell therapy change the genetic makeup of the patient? What about gene therapy? I ask, because I wonder what the long term, societal impact this will be.

yarrrr – “Good lord moron, it doesn’t come from embryos… i know, i know your snarking but jeez…”

Thank you Dr. Obvious. It was a JOKE. No need to be soooo insulting.

  7. amodedoma says:

I wonder what else can be made bigger using this technique?

  8. Norman Speight says:

Guess just what blokes will want to use stem cells for growing next. Wonder how many ‘quick-buck’ doctors will be up there offering it also.
Could be classed as a ‘capital gain’ thus open for taxation here in the UK.
And. When the patient discovers that a cancer stem cell has been implanted what will be accepted as ‘proof’ in any court action, thus lawyers also must be planning bigger cars, houses, holiday homes and the like. Truly, parasites move in mysterious ways.

  9. scumola says:

Ok, so this should work, right? They’ve been able to convert normal cells into stem cells (backwards from what it should be), then from stem cells, to breast fat cells, so theoretically, it could work. This could be the most important innovation to all men and women with a poor body image all over the world. Plan to hear about this on “The View” on Monday morning.

    #5,

This book is short form fiction, and many of the story’s deal with post humanism.

There is a group of physicians, patients and other interested people working together to get treatment with adult stem cells legalized in the U.S. as it should be. Please ask your family and friends to sign up (“JOIN”), and get as many doctors to sign up as well. See The American Stem Cell Therapy Association site at

  12. Ragamuffin says:

What does Nonami Takizawa (the model in your pictures) have to do with breast enhancement?

  13. Petrov says:

I’m guessing the model shows what breast enhancement can do for girls who look to be about 13 years old.

    A little disturbing actually…

  14. Rich says:

Re the picture- a little Japanese woman with big breasts is just a little Japanese woman with big breasts. Not much accomplished there…I know, a male sexist pig statement, but from the heart.

  15. chuck says:

I now think that stem cell research should be mandatory, and all other forms of research (except penis embiggening) should be abandoned.

  16. bobbo says:

#5–Liberty==I’m no expert either, but I do have high school science behind me. No one else responding, I’ll take a stab:

“Does stem cell therapy change the genetic makeup of the patient?” /// No. These tissue stem cells are injected at a site and they reproduce themselves at that location. They are not a “virus” that reproduces itself by infecting other cells. They do not migrate to the reproductive organs changing the eggs or sperm.

What about gene therapy?/// Yes, indeed, what about it?

I ask, because I wonder what the long term, societal impact this will be. /// In the end, we all die.

LL-I sure do hope you don’t think you have an opinion on anything tangential to science. Stifle yourself in such instances.

  17. FRAGaLOT says:

Stem cells can grow anything bigger. I’m sure this will lead to penis englargement soon.

  18. Billy Bob says:

Many of these stem cell treatments wind up cancerous…it will be terrible irony if the good news is you gained a cup, the bad news is you also gained breast cancer.

    Somewhere Christopher Reeve is crying.
