Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates regained the title of world’s richest person on Forbes magazine’s annual ranking of billionaires worldwide, as the global recession slashed the size of the list by 30 percent.
The number of billionaires fell to 793 from 1,125 last year. It was the first time since 2003 that the number of people on the list decreased, and the biggest drop since the magazine began the ranking 23 years ago.
The total net worth of the list fell to $2.4 trillion from $4.4 trillion last year, with the average billionaire worth $3 billion, down from $3.9 billion. The three wealthiest — Gates, Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Chairman Warren Buffett and Mexican telecommunications magnate Carlos Slim Helu — lost a combined $68 billion in the past year.
“The global economy’s being battered by a financial hurricane that has wrought devastating damage on the world’s financial systems,” Forbes Inc. Chief Executive Officer Steve Forbes said in a press conference in Manhattan today. “It’s no surprise that billionaires have been battered along with the global economy.”

I thought that Warren Buffet was the richest man in the world. I read somewhere that he had a net worth of 300 billion. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
#1 you are wrong.
Buffet is rich, but has never had anything close to $300 billion. Berkshire Hathaway (Buffet’s investment firm) has taken a beating recently. He guessed (wrongly) the bottom of the market back in November.
I don’t think any of the world’s richest have ever topped $100 billion (yet).

Canegie’s fortune in today’s dollars was about $189 Billion.
He’s baaaaaaaaaack.
I think Gates briefly crested $100 billion back in the late 90s.
But yeah, it today’s money Carnegie and Rockefeller both trump all.
Did you know by the time he was 35, Warren Buffett had amassed $7 million? At 50, he had over $200 million.
I will never be able to shake Gates rants about how the gundam pirates were ripping him off. From day one until now. Poor thing.
kmach844: According to Wikipedia: “(Warren Buffet) was ranked by Forbes as the richest person in the world during the first half of 2008, with an estimated net worth of $62.0 billion.[5], plummeting to $37 billion in early 2009, causing him to slide from #1 to #2 in the Forbes Billionaire List behind Bill Gates after losing $9 billion more than Gates.”
However, when it comes to being remarkably rich, and really cool, I reckon Buffet gets the biscuit. Mostly because he has the coolest house for a rich guy (which he bought in 1958 for the princely sum of US$31,000 http://impactlab.com/2008/05/24/warren-buffets-home/)
Poor guys. I can only imagine the tough timethey are having.
