Microsoft said shipping Windows 7 in Sept.

Microsoft could have Windows 7 on shipping PCs by September, Compal president Ray Chen said today at an investor’s conference. The PC contractor executive understands from plans that the software should be available in either late September or early October. The news would corroborate word of an April release candidate that would let Microsoft finish, manufacture and deliver Windows 7 well ahead of the holidays.

#87–Miguel==thats an interesting list, and speed is always relevant. I recall only two “upgrades” I have done and both were to secure more technology. To attach USB 2.0 devices and changing to NFTS file system to work with larger video files.

Does Win 7 add any new functionality?

((That makes me think $MS must wish it could combine OS with Web Browsers. Imagine needing a new OS in order to Twitter?))

    “original resolution?”

Yeah how ever the broadcaster sent it out. If it was 1080i then that is how I store it. I don’t de-interlace or anything like that. At that resolution it is pointless for me to convert to Divx and put it on a DVD. At best I could fit 1 1hour show (~42min without commercials) @1080i per 4.5 DVD. Assuming that I don’t compress the shit out of it. If it is a two hour show like Frontline or Nova can be……. Forget it. Even in Divx format it is too big to fit on a DVD. I find that any further compression of an already too compressed signal (Thanks Comcast) really shows itself on a large projection screen.

I keep everything in its original Mpeg2 stream. That is what Tivo uses and your Motorola 6624 as well. They are transport streams so I do a little conversion to program streams first.

Being bloated in programming has little to do with how Vista caches files other than the routine being a bloated program itself, not the process. I’m specifically referring to the bloated programming that is Vista. And the best way for me to see the difference in total size is to do a count of a clean install drive with both. Just for this sake, I’ll get the EXACT size I have for Vista and Win7 when I get home. I’ll include Fedora and Unbuntu as well for fun 😀

Paddy’s point is that of “Windows7 would be the seventh version of the kernel” means the kernel is OLD. What is your definition of NEW? You believe Windows7 is completely NEW? You got to be joking around.

And just finish your comment to Paddy about her being a troll. Just from that there’s absolutely no point in continuing or having any discussions with you. Good day. 

#82, yea my main reason for 64bit is for media (video mainly) as well. Great time saver with the right programs. That’s one thing I like 

We’re talking to people who’s deepest understanding of computers is how to program in 4GL’s…

Paddy, You have restored my faith in internet forum trolls.

So I guess the Unix kernel would be the oldest of all the modern OSs? All the updates and changes to it must be irrelevant too.

When are they going to release windows 7 ?

As far as kernel level strengths & weaknesses goes, yes.
