U.S. Republicans governors are split over whether to accept all of the money their states stand to receive from a $787 billion economic stimulus plan which President Barack Obama signed last week.

Three governors of southern states have come out against taking part of the money designated to extend unemployment benefits and perhaps for other programs. A handful of others are considering follow suit…

“There is some (stimulus money) we will not take in Mississippi. If we were to take the unemployment insurance reform package that they have, it would cause us to raise taxes on employment when the money runs out, and the money will run out in a couple of years,” said Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford and Louisiana’s Bobby Jindal, who has often been mentioned as a potential Republican presidential candidate in 2012, have also said they would reject the unemployment funds, which make up a small proportion of the overall package…

Later, speaking to reporters at a National Governors’ Association meeting in Washington, Sanford listed some other monies he did not want, possibly including $42 million for retrofitting state buildings to be more energy efficient.

Isn’t it great to see Republicans admit to being Republicans?

more for the rest of us I guess…

  2. Sloop John B says:

There is a clause in the stimulus package saying they can phase out the extension in 3 years. The EB can be totally paid for by the feds then phased out so it costs the state nothing.

Barbour is a liar. As usual.

  3. bernardo says:

Ahnold stood up at the Republican governors conference and told Barbour and his fellow royalists that if they didn’t want the money he’d gladly ask to have it shipped to California. There is no shortage of unemployed there who’d be grateful for the assistance.

Haven’t checked the paper, this morning, but our state legislature is meeting right now – and I’ve heard there will be a bill submitted asking for funds declared excess because Republican governors don’t want them to go to unemployed in their states.

Unemployment here ain’t as bad as many other states. Doesn’t make folks out of a job feel any better. But, I guess that’s some of the difference between ideology and reality.

“Isn’t it great to see Republicans admit to being Republicans?”

Yes – it is. I wish more would hold some conservative beliefs like this. It’s ironic that the Federal government was created by the States, and now the States kowtow to the Fed… Franklin, Jefferson, Adams all must be rolling in their graves…

  7. bobbo says:

Yea, but the beauty part is the same unfunded unemployed ex-workers will still vote Repuglican because they don’t want to have to pay inheritance taxes because “its not fair.”

    Hah, hah.

Wow! My first post removed due to anything which is funny since it used the same language as many other posters as well as my own.

Okay, so some of the governors don’t want to take the money due to all the strings attached. Not to worry though the b$tch governor (IMO) from Michigan will be more than happy to take the money after she screwed over her state (IMO).

Why would anyone in this day and age pay inheritance taxes anyway? Lots of ways to pass things along without it.

I paid all the taxes on my money when I earned it so why would I want my heirs to pay taxes on it again.

Easy to transfer real estate as well.

  11. Hmm. Odd headline.

    Alternative:

Leftists Would Rather Demagogue Crisis & Screw Taxpayers Than Have 7.5% Unemployed Deal w/the Realities of Life.

    This, too, shall pass.

  12. dogday says:

Ever hear of the 10th Amendment? States should reject items the Feds try to push down with strings attached essentially making States less autonomous.

Jindal was just on CNN and said that when disagreeing with Obama’s plans he will offer other solutions.

There is no reason that everyone should be onboard with every idea coming out of Washington.

  13. dogday says:

    (*repost*)

The Tenth Amendment (Amendment X) of the United States Constitution, which is part of the Bill of Rights, was ratified on December 15, 1791. The Tenth Amendment restates the Constitution’s principle of Federalism by providing that powers not granted to the National government nor prohibited to the states are reserved to the states and to the people.

  14. Li says:

The unemployment, as it was measured back during Carter’s term, is approaching 18%. . .Remember, that the numbers we get don’t include temp workers and self employed real estate agents. Not many of them are working right now. . .And, of course, if you have two masters degrees and you are working 30hrs a week at Wendy’s, you don’t count either..

Basically the books are cooked. If you want a window on our economic situation, look at the Japanese, who are far more honest. They say that their economy crashed ~4% in -one quarter-.

  15. smittybc says:

This is the most incredible story ever. Last week they told you to think that if the GOP were “honest” and not mean and evil like we all KNOW they are, they should not take any of the stimulus. Now they tell you that the GOP are “mean and evil” because they are out to screw the poor by refusing some of the money due to the strings that are attached. Do you see any inconsistencies with these arguments? Do you care? No you don’t, you enjoy getting played, like most on the left.

All this shows is that most on the left refuse to think. They just follow what media, professors, and other lefties tell them to think, because it feels better. Wall Street saw the Obama sham after Geitner spoke, now the Governors are examining the next Obama sham.

Here’s the real story, Obama was elected on “cutting the budget with a scalpel” and “going through the budget line by line on spending” and then he spends three years worth of deficits in his first month in office, with millions of dollars literally handwritten in on the document. So state government unions are happy but those that actually read the deal and have to clean up after the party are not. I know it’s painful to actually read the deals you sign, but being a grownup is sometimes difficult.

Good point. Especially since we are borrowing all this money from CHINA!

Short term unemployment help = Long term enslavement. Maybe we should just reconsider this whole mammoth spending package all together.

  17. AlgoreIsWorseThanHitler says:

Hmmm, it’s bad that the Republicans want to “screw” the unemployed, but it’s OK that the Obama/Pelosi/Reed Axis of Evil is trying to screw all US taxpayers.

  18. moss says:

“Let ’em eat cake”. The best original Republican motto returns.

  19. Mr. Fusion says:

    #15, smitty,

    So what is your point?

If someone that knows a thing or two, like, oh say, a University Professor, we should just ignore that? Or that Obama shouldn’t have done anything because Bush and the Republicans didn’t leave the worse depression since the Great Depression? Or that Wall Street not only had nothing to do with the economic crash but are also above taking any government money? That some GOP Congressmen and Senators that voted against the Stimulus Bill are not taking credit for it?

Geeze, I don’t get it. What the eff is your point?

  20. smittybc says:

The point is that media and academia (excluding hard sciences, math, biology, et al) and the left (I know redundant to say) strive to brainwash based on ideological lines rather than their primary purpose which is to clarify the world at large. You get a myopic and third grade level of understanding the world to the degree that you can say literally contradictory things from one week to the next and nobody notices. It’s just another argument for another week and another ratings period, but it doesn’t help anyone that is consuming it.

So what should be demanded is that these entities stick to their original purpose which is to explain and clarify the world and events, rather than attempt to transform the world (politically) along ideological lines or its left wing (or even right wing) values.

  21. cfikes says:

I wonder if this “stimulus” package is a good idea. Yeah it is hard times, but hasn’t every generation had a “hard times”? If we truly believe that capitalism works, then we need to let it work. Interference form the government will only delay the blow to the avg American for so long. It will still will happen. I say, don’t dump money we do not have into fixing a problem that is caused by not having money. Makes no sense. And for those “Just Print More Money” people, the dollar is already weak, lets not drive its value into the ground. Don’t buy what you can’t afford. Save money. Don’t be greedy. This will all pass in due time.

  22. Dallas says:

More political masturbation from the Republican speed bumps in congress. How much do these fat asses make to do nothing?

  23. Improbus says:

Where were you “conservatives” when Bush was sending us into the ground in Iraq and stealing our liberty? Hypocrites! I used to be a Republican. I didn’t leave the party. It left me.

  24. grog says:

p.s. so until they return the difference, could you please put a muzzle on your gop blowhards?

    thanks

  25. Paddy-O says:

    # 24 grog said, “all three states receive more money in federal spending than they pay in taxes, so they should shut the hell up.”

Cool, so you should have NO problem with them not wanting more. Why are you so upset that they want to do better and take less from taxpayers in other states?

  26. Mr Diesel says:

    #23 Improbus

I was screaming at anyone who would listen. Don’t equate Conservative with Republican. I sure as hell didn’t support a lot of the sh$t
Bush did. I did support the war.

I don’t support warrantless searches or the Patriot Act and I sure as hell don’t support giving the scum at ATT a pass on illegal activities. Just like Nazis, “I was only following orders” crap.

  27. grog says:

c’mon paddy, you gotta know i don’t care if they take it or not — i think they should — but for a governor of junkie state standing there like an asshole pretending to not want federal funds is laughable to me.

the only thing more laughable to me is how the gop-faithful think they’re so awesome.

  28. grog says:

    #26

sorry didn’t really answer your question there — my bad

Cool, so you should have NO problem with them not wanting more.
if they really don’t want it (i think i’ve proven that’s not true), then fine, whatever, let someone else have it.

Why are you so upset that they want to do better and take less from taxpayers in other states?

if that was their true motivation, i certainly would applaud them for it, and if they had a track record of doing such things i might be able to take their actions at face value, but you and i both know that this is a political stunt, nothing more. their history of accepting money and the numbers they accept back me up.

  29. grog says:

for the record, i don’t think republicans want to screw the unemployed, they think it would be better to try to create more jobs by providing tax relief to businesses.

i think tax cuts are great too, but i think my esteemed conservative friends are a bit naive in perceiving them to be such a panacea.

  30. Paddy-O says:
