A picture of an armed sheriff moving through an American home after an eviction due to a mortgage foreclosure won the top prize in the World Press Photo competition. Jury members said the strength of the photo by Anthony Suau for Time magazine was in its opposites – it looks like a classic war photograph, but is simply the eviction of people from a house.
The winner in the General News Singles category, by Brazilian photographer Luiz Vasconcelos, was another eviction scene showing a woman holding her naked child while being pushed away from her home by a line of riot police.
You can see the amazing photographs here.
The first photo is our present, the second photo is our future.
Geez. Nice photos, but too bad these aren’t good things instead of people losing their homes
Is it normal to point guns at people in America when evicting them?
stormcoder RE: future
Maybe, maybe not.

Some states are finally getting some brass. It’s past time to stick it to the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

Photo journalism, is all that we have left. Editorial social commentary, journalists with a moral compass, researchers with an ethical agenda – are probably also being evicted.
Just another photo chosen to paint the US in a bad light. From the looks of the condition of the place the Cop is exercising due diligence to protect himself.
Got to go with 5. It looks like this place was trashed and abondoned leaving the house full of unpaid for furniture and God knows what. Reasonible and prudent people are careful around such places.
McCullough, why don’t you pay their bills or invite them to move in with you?
Unless you can feed me enough valid data to judge if the right thing is being done or not, stick it in your ear.
On the same note, our beloved President Obama has arranged to have 100,000 Palestinians move to the United States. This humanitarian move should make us all feel proud about how humane our President is.
Of course they pretty well terminated the Lebanese when they did that and as big fans of Hamas many of them think a good American is a dead American.
that picture was taken in cleveland, at the height (???!!?!?!) of the forclosure crisis, (uhm we aint over on that)
there was an article in the cleveland plain dealer, which oddly didnt have the photo….
#5 Why does this make America look bad? Sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder.
The rest of the world watched with horror as America invaded Iraq for profit, and you think this makes America look bad?
The top photo is from Cleveland, Ohio. The house was abandoned due to foreclosure. When the Officer entered the house the door was open and the place had been ransacked. He is indeed exercising due diligence.
After looking at the photo, I feel sorry for the landlord who will be stuck with the nasty job of cleaning up the mess that the evicted bums left.
That top photo looks like to grand opening of a new meth lab!
Will the 100,000 Palestinians coming to the US courtesy of Obama be vetted as well as his cabinet/government picks? *said with a straight face*
Apparently the cop didn’t see the photographer hiding. The photo won as it artistically depicts the problems with policing vacant homes.
The woman was clearly being sought by the swat team for violating a nudity ordinance adopted last year in Huntington Beach. Prior to this anyone could walk around naked without a fine, yes really.

I guess you forgot about the cease fire agreement that Iraq agreed to and did not abide by. You might not of been born then so I excuse your ignorance.
#15 Glidedon
Defending the Iraq war now? I can see why you have that chip on your shoulder.
The world already knows that America is not all rainbows and unicorns. No need to hide it.
“Unexpected Urgent Refugee and Migration Needs Related to Gaza
MEMORANDUM FOR THE SECRETARY OF STATE
SUBJECT: Unexpected Urgent Refugee and Migration Needs Related to Gaza
By the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, including section 2(c)(1) of the Migration and Refugee Assistance Act of 1962 (the “Act”), as amended (22 U.S.C. 2601), I hereby determine, pursuant to section 2(c)(1) of the Act, that it is important to the national interest to furnish assistance under the Act in an amount not to exceed $20.3 million from the United States Emergency Refugee and Migration Assistance Fund for the purpose of meeting unexpected and urgent refugee and migration needs, including by contributions to international, governmental, and nongovernmental organizations and payment of administrative expenses of the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration of the Department of State, related to humanitarian needs of Palestinian refugees and conflict victims in Gaza.
You are authorized and directed to publish this memorandum in the Federal Register.
BARACK OBAMA
THE WHITE HOUSE,
January 27, 2009″
My brother in law has been wrong but I wouldn’t bet on it this time. If that isn’t a fake we are spending a lot of money to move them somewhere and most places aren’t that crazy.
He also said a few middle eastern types have been caught coming across the border. Their best guess is they only stop about one in ten so you do the math.
I’d like to think he’s wrong but he has contacts in the border patrol. All he has to do is ask to find out if he’s being fed a line of bull.
You can sleep real good now knowing that Obama is keeping you safe.
To be fair maybe Obama didn’t create the border problem but it is up to him to deal with it.
Okay I did a web search. Try this then make up your own minds:

After due reflection he may just be going to spend some relief.
Freaking out can wait until people start moving in.
The top picture seems posed. If the officer were to pull the trigger with his gun so close to his face he would get a broken nose for sure.
I have taken better pictures on my crappy iphone camera. Who where the crack heads that picked these?
deowll,
So I’m not sure what the problem is here. So we shouldn’t allow refugees into the country or is it because you disapprove of where the refugees come from?
#23, Redfaced,
So you have taken better pictures with your iPhone? Congratulations. Is that by your judgment or a panel of professionals?
This is a very well crafted picture. There is tension, some drama, a history, as well as mystery over where he is going. What’s behind that door? Why is the house so torn up? Why is the cop even there?
The photographer might have taken 100 pictures that day and this is the only true keeper. And for good reason, it is a keeper. So if you have taken better pictures with your iPhone, why not post them so we can all see your genius?
#3, Confederate traitor,
So what? That is a resolution and is worth less than the paper it is printed on.
# 5 Glidedon, Yes of course, more neocon playbook rhetoric; “Cop is exercising due diligence to protect himself.”
Don’t expect every American to pay unquestioning homage to “your power and control psychotic overlords”.
Some of us have don’t share your knee jerk need to “serve and protect the police”.
Mr. Fusion, I can only assume you haven’t heard of Hamas.
You might want to check out what they’ve managed to do for property values in Gaza.
Of course if you are in the funeral business…
#28, deowll,
Are you trying to hijack the thread to support for the Israelis murdering the Palestinians?
Gaza Strip property values would be a lot better if the Israelis stopped bombing the shit out of it, they allowed food and water in, and they didn’t drive their tanks through all the buildings.
But I know you approve such actions which makes you a piece of shit in my eyes.
