Mexican soldiers fought gun battles with drug cartel hitmen near the U.S. border after gangsters abducted local police in violence that killed 21 people and left bodies strewn in the desert.

Soldiers pursued the hitmen through freezing desert in the northern state of Chihuahua after they dragged nine people, including some police, out of houses and shot six of them at a ranch in the early hours of Tuesday, the army said.

Heavily armed soldiers burst into the ranch, near the Texan border, and shot dead several of the hitmen, later chasing another group by helicopter before killing them too, army spokesman Enrique Torres said from the area…

The surge in bloodshed has scared off foreign tourists and investors along the border just as the global economic crisis is pushing Mexico into recession…

More than 2,000 of the drug war deaths recorded last year were in Chihuahua state, including the murder of 13 people at a party in August.

The presence of more than 3,000 troops and federal police in Chihuahua has done nothing to contain the violence. Ciudad Juarez, a manufacturing city in the desert across from El Paso, Texas, has seen beheadings, daily shootouts and a surge in kidnappings and extortion.

Just in case you were thinking of a day trip.

  1. Paddy-O says:

We need to pull our military from international bases and have them patrol our Southern border.

  2. Mr. Fusion says:

When the gangsters are better equipped than the police, it is time to call in the military.

This is the atmosphere the Leibertarians want for America. No government interference in their operations, freedom to build their own private armies, and preach personal responsibilities to the poor masses.

  3. GregA says:

Sounds to me like the Mexican Military is taking care of business.

One important part of this story that Eideard missed is that Mexico is asking the US to start interdicting the illegal export of US firearms to Mexico on our side of the border.

  4. Mac Guy says:

#1 – Take that a step further. How long do you think it’ll be before we actually go in?

  5. Paddy-O says:

#4 – As long as we fortify our side and stop anyone crossing over we don’t need to worry about it.

  6. GregA says:

    #5,

Yeah, because that has worked out well for Israel and Gaza. LOL.

  7. Paddy-O says:

    # 6 GregA said, on February 11th, “Yeah, because that has worked out well for Israel”

Yep, after the partition went up, suicide bombings plummeted in Israel. Logic isn’t your strong suit, is it?

  8. Mr Diesel says:

I worked in that area for a week a few years ago. I don’t think I want to go back for a visit.

I was there for three days before I saw a woman that wasn’t knock down drag out gorgeous and that includes the women working in the factory and on the streets. What a shame it has to turn into such a shithole because of drug gangs.

  9. GregA says:

    #7,

Well right now we have zero suicide bombings, you want there to be MOAR suicide bombings. Geat job sherlock!

  10. Paddy-O says:

    # 9 GregA said, “Well right now we have zero suicide bombings, you want there to be MOAR suicide bombings.”

    MOAR?

Anyway, back to logical people. If we stop up the border, the thugs on the other side will have to leave the area as the rational for being there will be gone.

  11. Phydeau says:

As long as Americans want drugs and are willing to pay for them and they’re illegal, there will always be a rationale for the drug dealers to be there. That’s the beauty of Capitalism — wherever there’s a demand, there will be a supply.

#2. “This is the atmosphere the Leibertarians want for America. No government interference in their operations, freedom to build their own private armies, and preach personal responsibilities to the poor masses.”

Uh no…your an idiot. Not all Libertarians want this. Just like not all Liberals are gay. Your generalizations make you look like a fool.

  13. Breetai says:

Hmm.. Oh well, Too bad Guantanamo is shut down. Declaring them the terrorists they are and Sticking the Cartel Members asses there and making sure the public knew it may have gone a long way to putting a hurt on the cartels.

  14. Paddy-O says:

    # 11 Phydeau said, “As long as Americans want drugs and are willing to pay for them and they’re illegal, there will always be a rationale for the drug dealers to be there.”

Umm, no. They’ll only stay there if it is a major transit point. Put troops there with shot to kill orders and they will go away.

  15. Mr. Fusion says:

    #13, Bree,

They aren’t terrorist. They are common criminals and should be treated like common criminals.

  16. Mr. Fusion says:

    #14, Cow-Patty,

So, you’re hiding out here now. When are you going to post that link where Frank said it was the voters FAULT for the corruption in Washington?

  17. amodedoma says:

    #14

That statement, is true and just as effective as leaving things as they are. The history of contraband shows us that where there’s a demand there’s always a way.

  18. Paddy-O says:

    # 17 amodedoma said, “That statement, is true and just as effective as leaving things as they are.”

So, having armed para-military gangs crossing into the US is as good as not having them crossing the border?

    Gotcha…

  19. MRN says:

    #15
Reminds me of an old joke:

A U.S. national and a Mexican citizen were comparing the capabilities of their respective law enforcement organizations.

The American proudly said, “In my city the police arrive at the crime scene within five minutes after getting a call.”

The Mexican answered back, “That’s nothing, in my country when a crime occurs the police are already there.”

  20. green says:

US invasion of Mexico to bring stability coming soon.

  21. Phydeau says:

So, having armed para-military gangs crossing into the US is as good as not having them crossing the border?

I’d say for the average American drug user who just wants his weed at a decent price and doesn’t care about the death and chaos at the border, the answer is yes.

  22. derspankster says:

Shit, I used to have to go down there on business. Thank God I’m retired.

  23. sargasso says:

They named a town after a small dog?

  24. Olo Baggins of Bywater says:

If we don’t get serious about the border these fights will end up happening in San Diego and McAllen.

  25. Paddy-O says:

#27 Agreed. Need to seal the border & only allow traffic through checkpoints.

  26. skatterbrainz says:

#27 – Already happening in San Diego, Atlanta and Houston. It’s been in the news this past week.

    #21 – I hope you’re kidding.

#15 – They are terrorists. Read the news. They announce on police band radio the names of police and officials they will kill next. Their “accuracy” has been 100% so far. That’s terrorizing, so they’re terrorists.

#26 – The dog was once the mayor.

  27. GF says:

    Las muertas de Juárez

Ciudad Juarez has been a hell hole for decades.

  28. Mr. Fusion says:

    #27, Mr. Baggins,

If we don’t get serious about the border these fights will end up happening in San Diego and McAllen.

Then Oklahoma City, Nashville, Ashville, Raleigh, then Washington?

Good thing they are heading North East instead of just North.

  29. ECA says:

    25,
    Almost…
Look at the map of mexico..The politico’s DONT do much of anything really..
They dont develop ANYTHING, they dont build, NOTHING.

Only lawful areas are near Larger cities and TOURIST locations.

Drugs..Legalize them, control them, monitor them, and TAX them, and SELL THEM…and DUMP the market on those selling illegally.

    MEXICO,
should ask the USA to interdict, within the 200 miles from the border.
WHICH could make 200 miles of NO-MANS land, unless you have a JOB and can PROVE IT..
AS well as make one HELL of a BORDER crossing.
