An astonishing statistic: fewer people are quitting their jobs these days. Who could have predicted that?

I saw this article and thought you might have an interest in these maps that show beneficiaries of the stimulus on a state-by-state basis.

  2. SparkyOne says:

The text in the arrow on the chart should read “We Are Fucked”. We know what point is current by the legend.

  3. bill says:

#1 thanks! that is most interesting!

  4. jim says:

It’s like driving off a cliff.

  5. Paddy-O says:

Wow! We’re at 7.6% unemployment now. I hope we don’t get to the 11% I remember when Carter was Pres. I think we might surpass that though…

    Grim indeed.

  6. CRM says:

Half the job losses have been in the finance industry. This is the first recession in a while where it was realized a big section of the economy was fraudulant. Outside of finance (the biggest employer) thing are only terrible.

  7. sargasso says:

Y-axis legend reads, “Job Losses Relative to Peak Month (in thousands)”, indicating that the Y-axis data was normalized. So each of those plots represents a different data set (dates), with different economic influences and different starting points. After sixteen years of unrivaled economic prosperity, it might as well represent a relaxation plot.

  8. Dallas says:

#1 Very good illustrative link. Thanks.

  9. Grandpa says:

Very visual and scary. Makes you wonder how the Republicans can still get up the nerve to try to hold things up. They are a gutsy group for sure. I remember a time, several years ago, they almost passed a bill to eliminate Unemployment Benefits. It almost passed in Oregon! Heartless bastards, I’ve never forgotten that.

  10. jbenson2 says:

Looks like Uncle Dave fell for another one. The drop in 1974 was conveniently forgotten.

#10 – Just leave facts out of this, okay?!!

  12. deowll says:

I clicked on the link and and AVG says the web site is running a trojan.

  13. Paddy-O says:

    #12 – False positive.

  14. MikeN says:

That is total job loses, and the work force is bigger now. They should be comparing unemployment levels. When you account for that, all the chart really shows is that recessions are bad, and it is good for recessions to be short.

  15. Improbus says:

Fear still sells page views. Meh.

  16. Mr. Fusion says:

The right wing nuts never cease to amaze me. How they can be so glib about “well, we had more people” or “hey you forgot 1974”.

Phuk you ash wholes. Our economy tanked because of the failed policies of eight years of a Republican, neo-con, Libertarian, conservative in the White House. None of you have stepped up and said, “Here is my plan”. All you can do is post links about the differences between FDR and BHO.

Get a life ash wholes. Remember, you lost the election. Badly. Get out of the way. You might be a speed bump but you will end up a run over speed bump.

  17. Lou Minatti says:

“Phuk you ash wholes. Our economy tanked because of the failed policies of eight years of a Republican, neo-con, Libertarian, conservative in the White House.”

You can almost picture the spittle hitting his monitor.

Here’s a better way to look at it: Obama is turning Bush’s recession into Obama’s Depression.

BTW, who was it that received millions in bribes from Fannie and Freddy and Countrywide?

  18. Named says:

    5,

Your U6 unemployment rate is already well over 12%. But, as a CEO, you should recognize the benefit of having so many mothers… uh, “employees” willing to stock the larder in your basement for lower wages.

  19. Lou Minatti says:

“Looks like Uncle Dave fell for another one.”

    Are you new here? 🙂

Porkulus is being shoved down our throats and the PTB don’t want us to question it. Hence we get Nancy’s misleading graph. It’s amazing to me that many liberals don’t seem to think we should spend a little bit more time debating a ONE TRILLION DOLLAR SPENDING BILL. Instead of intelligent debate we get Mr. “Phuk you ash wholes.”

  20. Mr. Fusion says:

    #17, Louser,

So, what is your plan to save the economy?

Pray tell, since bribes are illegal, who did Freddy, Fanny, and Country Wide bribe? Since you are posting an accusation a link might be a good idea.

  21. Winston says:

These graphs don’t give a valid comparison because the method used by the fedgov to compute unemployment has changed greatly over the years, each change resulting in LESS unemployment indicated by their fudged figures. Thus, any graph that doesn’t take this into account is garbage. The major changes were made in 1980 and during the Clinton era. Thus, the 1974 figure is much inflated compared to the current much more fudged rate. These are the real rates for today:

    #16 Fusion:

Bush was certainly NOT a Libertarian.

“None of you have stepped up and said, “Here is my plan”

So anyone without a plan can’t complain? I *hate* that kind of BS logic.

That’s like saying you *have* to vote to have a right to complain. What-evar. I elect people to make the plan, and when they fail, I complain, and rightfully so.

“Remember, you lost the election. Badly.”

Oh, so *now* you like that Electoral College. Look at the popular vote – it’s a 7% diff. But since the gap was bigger in the college, you’ll quote that one.

  23. Bob says:

Sigh, and our solution to the recession caused by runaway government spending? Why its to have government spend even more money. Someday this is all going to come back and bite us all big time, maybe sooner than most people think.

  24. #10 – jbesnson2,

Be careful when citing blogs as a source. First, the other graphs all seem to turn around while the current is not yet showing any sign of doing so. Second, it seems to me that the current crisis has a lot more to it than job loss. I would like to see a graph that compares current economic conditions with those of 1929-1939.

  25. Rick Cain says:

Sorry GOP, your herbert hoover left office in 2008.
You know its bad when racist republicans now have more confidence in a black man with an african/muslim name than in one of their own old rich white guy from texas.

  26. deowll says:

To # 16. The incompatents running Congress then and on vidio preventing steps that would have avoided at least part of the melt down are still in Congress and in charge of the same positions.

And while I’m not a Bush fan the vidio’s clearly show that wasn’t one of Bush’s numerous blunders nor were most of the key people Reps. They had already lost control by then.

  27. MikeN says:

Well one Democratic Congressman from Idaho has proposed a stimulus of about $100 billion, with all spending to happen by 2010, unlike the current plan.

  28. thatisnotcorrrect says:

Sorry, this graph is not normalized for today’s much larger work force vs prior recessions and is misleading. The correct graph is shown here:

    http://www.calculatedriskblog.com/2009/02/job-losses-during-recessons.html

  29. Mr. Fusion says:

    #22, brm,

Bush was certainly NOT a Libertarian.

    Ya, I know.

    The Republicans disowned him too.

    So did the conservatives.

    And the neo-cons.

    And the Evangelicals.

    And his father.

So who the hell voted for that clown?

  30. #29 – Mr. Fusion,

Bush was not a libertarian because he opposed social liberties and gave huge amounts of welfare, albeit corporate welfare.

Bush was not a conservative because he was a typical borrow and bomb republican running up debt like crazy, which does cause huge tax increases, just not during one’s own administration.

Old school republicans probably don’t like him either, as old school republicans were basically libertarians.

For new school republicans to have disowned him makes no sense. He was a perfect new school republican using typical gush-up Reaganomics.

The organizations that had all of their members voting for him wer likely No Billionaire Left Behind. and the National Organization of Morans.
