He says, “Watch out for Harry Potter, too!”

Pope Benedict has…promoted ultra-conservative cleric Fr Gerhard Maria Wagner to assistant bishop of the Austrian city of Linz.

Fr Wagner is also notorious for his extreme views – he has accused the popular Harry Potter novels of spreading Satanism, and described Hurricane Katrina as God’s punishment for the sinners of New Orleans.

He wrote…that the death and destruction caused by the hurricane in New Orleans was divine retribution for the city’s tolerance of homosexuals and permissive sexual attitudes.

The future bishop said he was glad that Katrina destroyed not only nightclubs and brothels in New Orleans, but also five of the city’s abortion clinics.

I’m not certain if the Pope plans on taking his church back to the 18th Century – or the 14th.

  2. bobbo says:

Academic?==more like calcified in his cloister. A pox on the superstitious lot of them. Is such “god’s punishment” even consider “religion” today?

    hah, hah!!!

  3. Dallas says:

I’m always happy when someone gets promotion. Hopefully Fr Wagner got a new office with window and pay increase.

However, this is a terrible appointment especially when he denigrates a city and state that has so many worshipers (customers).

  4. QB says:

I was being polite, you’re probably more accurate. The man has never actually been a parish priest and was named Cardinal by Pope Paul, which tells you how long he’s been in the Curia.

That’s one gay-ass picture of harry.

The morons in New Orleans re-elected Ray Nagin they deserve what they get.

And the Catholic hierarchy wonders why so many people are turning away from their faith.

  17. Shubee says:

Why do devastating hurricanes, which are quite ordinary statistically, have meaning but an unusually high concentration of pedophiles in the Catholic hierarchy is meaningless?

  18. bobbo says:

#17–Shubee==because devastating hurricanes can’t reach Vatican City.

The last Pope (PJ2) visited New Orleans back in 1987. I guess the city wasn’t as sinful then, as it was during Katrina. Anyone believe that? How come the Bishop doesn’t mention the destruction visited upon coastal towns of Texas, and declare them as sinful places, by the same logic? I guess having George Bush as resident, makes all the difference.

Let’s face it. New Orleans is just plain dirt poor. And they got the dirty end of it, because their state didn’t elected Bush. And I suspect the land value is kept low, so the Oil refineries don’t have to pay higher costs for land use (taxes, rent). That’s why they build so many plants in the poorest of communities. Right in the paths of major storms. And while Florida has plenty of Gulf coast land, it had the least number of oil refineries. Only in Tampa, as far as I can tell. The Florida panhandle is off limits for oil development. And we’re losing others as the land values go up due to speculation. The last new refinery was built in at Garyville, La., in 1976.

It’s interesting to note that gas stations in NYC are disappearing. That fact hasn’t made the news.

    Razinger is really embarrassing.

I had never much respect for any pope, but at least it is a high figure for many people and therefore in a position to do good.
His predecessor was at least nice, albeit inefficient in making the world a better place.

    YEA FOR POPE BENEDICK

C’mon everybody, let’s all cheer for his holiness.

    Yea for the Pope.

Remember, he is god’s rep here on earth, what he tells us is really god’s word.

    yea for pope benney,

What is this? Has he alienated everyone? Gee, it must suck to be a Cattledick.

    /sarcasm

Sure am glad I don’t believe in any “guy in the sky” crap.

  23. BrimstoneAshe says:

I lived on the Mississippi Gulf Coast when Katrina hit, and shortly after the storm, I heard on more than one occasion from the plethora of bible thumpers that Katrina was indeed a punishment of sin. So this may sound crazy to a lot of folks, but there are a lot of folks who actually WENT thru Katrina that believe this too, which is even more scary to me.

  24. Mr. Fusion says:

    #23, Brimstone,

So what does the Pope think of your ash?
