Anti-Jewish commentary is flooding the Internet in the wake of Bernard Madoff’s arrest on charges of masterminding one of the biggest Wall Street frauds in history, campaigners said Friday. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) said there had been “an outpouring of anti-Semitic comments on mainstream and extremist Web sites.”

Madoff, 70, is Jewish and a prominent member of the powerful US Jewish community. He is alleged to have defrauded investors, including a number of Jewish-related charities, of some 50 billion dollars.

“Site users have posted comments ranging from deeply offensive stereotypical statements about Jews and money — with some suggesting that only Jews could perpetrate a fraud on such a scale — to conspiracy theories about Jews stealing money to benefit Israel,” the ADL said in a statement.

“Jews are always a convenient scapegoat in times of crisis, but the Madoff scandal and the fact that so many of the defrauded investors are Jewish has created a perfect storm for the anti-Semites,” said Abraham Foxman, ADL national director.

“Nowadays, the first place Jew-haters will go is to the Internet, where they can give voice to their hateful ideas without fear of repercussions.”

Does it count when you cheat your own “people”, or is that OK?

I was going to say “its not anti-semitic when jews are doing the posting” but then I rtfa. Still, when a disproportionate number of your victims are jewish, the charge seems a bit misplaced.

I’ll post back when I can think of a better one, anti-semantic isn’t good enough.

  2. bobbo says:

I think Zorkor would be more insane on this issue. Can’t wait.

  3. JimR says:

Just send him to a prison in Israel and be done with him.

  4. moondawg says:

I don’t know what they’re crabbing about. Without the damn Jews, there wouldn’t even BE any anti-semitism.

  5. sargasso says:

Madoff, has yet to be tried in court.

  6. skatterbrainz says:

He may yet to have his day in court, but the preliminary evidence is rather damning.

I’m half-Jewish, if there is such a thing, and I have to say that how it was presented in the media was almost anticipating this. I cringed when they rattled off the list of duped investors, from Spielberg on down the line. The first ten names were Jewish. Anyone with half a brain would start connecting the dots and wonder about that. It’s embarrassing.

Gosh. Besides being an anti-punctuationist and and anti-grammarian, you’re anti-semantic as well? Holy smokes. So much bitterness. So much resentment toward the rules that govern.

  8. Gary, the dangerous infidel says:

One of my own eye-opening experiences was just a couple of days ago, when I realized I knew absolutely nothing about a supposed “charity” that was shut down due to the exposure of Madoff’s fraud. On the website of the Robert I. Lappin Charitable Foundation I found the following statement of purpose…

“Our mission is helping to keep our children Jewish, thus reversing the trend of assimilation and intermarriage.”

I knew that Jewish people sometimes tend to practice anti-Gentile discrimination informally, but I was oblivious to the fact that there were formal programs to teach such discrimination to their children even outside of their specifically religious framework.

The explicit goals of the Lappin charity included teaching Jewish children to “Develop a connection to and love of Israel” and to “Imbue our children with the desire to stay Jewish and marry Jewish.”

If you were to replace the word “Jewish” with the word “Mexican,” I think we’d see a very harsh backlash against the [legal and documented] Mexican-American community, and a lot of people would be wondering what kind of voters these children would grow up to be. Whose interests will they consider foremost when they cast their ballots, America’s or those of another country? The question is absolutely valid when love of another country is a stated goal.

The only time I find myself having creeping anti-Semitic thoughts is when I see such blatant anti-Gentilism condoned.

  9. jon says:

Gary, don’t be dumb. what do they teach in catholic schools, or in church. What about christian singles events. What about evangelical home schooling. There is nothing wrong or anti-any-other-group by being pro your own ethnic group.

  10. Tomas says:

#10. Since when do they teach in Catholic or Christian schools allegiance to a different country?

A Lebanese friend once asked, is Judaism a religion or a race?

  11. Gary, the dangerous infidel says:

Jon, with all due respect (to someone who implies I’m being dumb), I do see a significant difference when American children are being taught to love another country. That is one of the explicit goals of the foundation. What is the parallel to that in your example of Christians, Catholics, or Evangelicals?

(I see Tomas beats me with the correct reply)

  12. daveg says:

There is nothing wrong or anti-any-other-group by being pro your own ethnic group.

    This is patently false.

Anyone pushing the idea that white people should only marry white people will be labeled racist. They will be called ‘supremacists’ even if they don’t say there group is supreme.

Now, the Religious angle blurs things a bit, but there is a strong racial component to the inter-jewish marriage thing. For example, Eliot Abrahms had written that Jews should not marry converts, and he has not been chastised for this. If fact, he has been allowed to work for dick cheney even though he was convicted of lying to congress.

There is an extreme double standard here.

  13. bobbo says:

What you all are missing is that minority groups struggle to survive and share little with dominate groups that “put up with them.”

It would only be hypocrisy if they had equal measures on the relevant variables and such is not the case when discussing the Jews, Israel, Christians, Mexico, White People or the USA.

Its tough when there is no real comfort in being twisted and small minded.

  14. daveg says:

The other thing is that a lot of valid critism of Maydoff, the ‘exclusive’ country club and his clients who thought they were beating the system is being labeled antisemitic.

Sure, some small portion is, but an explosion is it not.

come’on people, anti-whatever is used only to sell copy..

as has been stated by many a “devout Dvorakian”

-humans are by nature, a tribal animal.

nothing wrong with wanting to be “pro your own ethnic group”

-however, there is nothing to be gained politically or monetarily from a united peoples..much to be gained from divide and conquer (as history has shown) -play us against each other and the world will be your oyster..(or some such effective bull)

class warfare is all the politician and newscaster
needs to succeed in their endevours. -without it, they are nothing.

unfortunately…the masses are by and large, clueless to this fact.

what i would like to know is WHERE is did this $50billion USD go..?? it took me as a young 20 something, 6yrs to blow 1.3mil foolishly..

tell me what you may, but its got to be hard to “spend” $50bill without having something to show for it..be it foreign accounts, paper trails or bars of gold in a “safe place” -$50bill doesn’t just disappear..

    devil’s advocate:

what if all these people/foundations are claiming a loss to cover a combined effort.. i mean come’on…i’ve dated several jewish girls/japs.. all of their families had an acute knowledge of what their money was “doing for them”

-one thing i never saw amongst the gals i dated was one jewish family “praying or plotting upon another” -something i thought was very commendable given the indifference of people today..

so again…where is this money or it’s proceeds today??

-as the saying goes, “follow the money.”

#17 soundwash asked, “what i would like to know is WHERE is did this $50billion USD go..??”

soundwash, I’ll be happy to take your question and give you the best I can, a purely hypothetical answer that ignores actual facts even more than I usually do.

Using the simplest possible example of one investor, plus the wizard Bernie, our trusting investor gives Bernie his $100 million to put hard at work befriending many more dollars. The investor or foundation doesn’t want to reinvest (compound) the proceeds, as he wants regular income from the investment, but he leaves the capital intact. So Bernie pays the investor his “returns” monthly, which if I recall were in the neighborhood of 1% a month (it’s a very nice neighborhood).

By sheer coincidence, our example pegs this return neatly at $1 million per month. Not accounting for what Bernie took out in fees, we reached the magical 100th month (hypothetically) last week and Bernie now confesses that the “profits” he sent the investor were actually taken from the original principal of the investment, and it is now all gone. Bernie took some of it, to be sure, but the investor received much of it himself and spent it (not so wisely, in some cases), thinking he was only spending the profits and not the principal.

“Abracadabra,” as they say in the magic biz. Of course, many people were cheated so badly that they saw none of their own money returned as it was in our example, while others may have withdrawn all principal plus profits before the jig was up. The only point I’m trying to make (so longwindedly) is that Wizard Bernie doesn’t have to have stolen the $50 billion for it to have irretrievably disappeared. It may have simply been disguised as profits.

As Bernie would say, “Happy Hanukkah!”

  22. Named says:

    14,

You know, I don’t think you can call white people who practice Judaism a “minority.” In fact, without a name (sometimes that doesn’t help, e.g. Stein) or affiliation you would be hard pressed to place any Ashkenazi outside the realm of traditional WASPS. In fact, they ARE white people.

Similar to the Albanians. They are Muslim, but would you consider them a visible minority? They are as European looking as a German.

You know, the picture above made me think about the fact that until about year 2000 the Israeli identification card specified your prior nationality including whether you were a jew or an arab.

So, after all that the Jewish State decided that knowing who was a Jew and who was not was actually important.
