Linux Fedora 10 comes in nanny mode. The developers don’t want you to log in as root because your “not supposed to.” But I say real users are root users so here’s how to take the training wheels off. All you have to do is edit the file /etc/pam.d/gdm and remoce this like.

auth required pam_succeed_if.so user != root quiet

Linux seems in many ways to be more of a religion than an operating system. It’s great for servers in text mode. I use it myself here on dvorak.org and 400 other sites. But Linux is a culture of the wilfull ignorant and that is in part why that even though it’s free, it still has less that 1% market share. I suspect that if you were to offer people $1000 to never use Windows or Macs again and use Linux only you would find few takers if the offer excludes those who are already using Linux. Fedora is deliberately trying to embrace failure. The above fix is an example as to why.

I still say that using the “vi” editor causes brain damage. And – I’m not one of those reviewers who gush over how wonderful Fedora is no matter how bad it sucks.

    …sweeet…. i want that paint
job on my g/f asap.. 😀

oh.. and linux in nanny mode? this is the
beginning of the end for linux.. say it aint so.

how about STOP dumming down the O/S’s and START
increasing the f’n IQ of the users…

we have to have at least one O/S core that stays
    true to it’s roots..so to speak.. 😉

  3. John Paradox says:

    1: odd, that’s the first (0kay, second)thing I thought, too.

2: the heck with the paint job…..

    J/P=?

  4. Mister Mustard says:

    Remoce?

It will be a cold day in Hell before I remoce. You might be able to convince Paddy-RAMBO or ‘dro to remoce, but remocing is one thing I will NEVER do. That’s just perverse.

  5. zorkor says:

is it me or those nipples of her look disgusting. maybe theyre over used, certainly not by her child(rens) Yuck!! 😉

  6. Duffy says:

Hey, most implementations of KDE won’t let you log in as root! That’s one reason why I use GNOME. It’s not as anal as KDE in that respect.

In all fairness, though, how hard is it to do a SU to do anything rootish?

  7. No Luck says:

I live booted the Fedora 10 disc.

It had no suport for my 2nd monitor resolution (30″ LCD)…

    Fail!

I like to check in on LINUX from time to time… Needs another year in the cooker.

  8. Gul'Dru-An says:

    I don’t think that’s SFW John….
Lol, the fact is that Linux will never be widespread, people are becoming less and less intelligent, ressourceful and computer savvy; explaining the recent skyrocketing market share of the mac platform (ZING). The point being, Linux will never really be a “mainstream” operating system; Linux is infinitely useful, but not for the common folk. True say?

  9. Geoffrey says:

I just love the look of the new GUI. Beautiful.

  10. cvquesty says:

Clearly, you are not a sysadmin and you are a fool.

No one logs in as root who is well seasoned in systems administration because they know better.

EVERYONE fatfingers things. EVERYONE makes mistakes.

The reason you shouldn’t login as root is not only because you “are not supposed to” but because it’s just plain bad practice.

NONE of us login as root at our organization, and not only that… We prevent root shell from being obtained by systems admins.

The REASON the other platforms are so susceptible to virii and trojans is precisely BECAUSE the Windows user is root. (unless you take other precautions to limit your user’s abilities, which you clearly are not talking about)

THat day when you totally whack a directory, or you destroy data you really need, remember… you “fixed” a very unbroken security methodology, and you told absolutely everyone about it.

  11. Christopher_T says:

Who knew Linux was a B-cup? lol

  12. Rob (AU) says:

The mistake here is some think he means no ‘su’, however, I think he means it has gone the Ubuntu path and only ‘sudo’ is allowed.
I, for one, do not like ‘sudo’ for any system maintenance I may have to do. It might be OK for one or two tasks, but for extended maintenance sessions it loses it’s shine after the first 20 or so times. On the systems I control, ‘sudo’ has to have the password entered on every instance, regardless of whether they are only moments apart, or at the same time.

    btw,
    NEVER login as root.
ALWAYS login as a user and ‘su’ for the system maintenance.
ALWAYS set it up so users aren’t able to ‘su’,’sudo’ or go to a tty.
NEVER let the password show as stars, dots, etc., this allows crackers to see how many characters there are in a given password/username pair.

#5 — it’s just you. Those nips are perfect and her breasts are perter than any boob-jobbed celeb. Cute face too. What’s with the yuck?
Ever seen these things up close?

  14. Mr. Normal says:

    Pretty girl.

  15. Chris Heath says:

why hasn’t anyone said they’d like to ‘root her box’ yet?

    oh wait, this isn’t digg…

  16. Floyd says:

#14, 15–Agreed. I like pretty women with perky boobs. #5 has no clue.

  17. simongiln says:

You don’t like Fedora. Neither do I. Maybe you should stop bitching, and try a more user friendly Linux OS, rather than label the entire world of desktop Linux as stupid.

Anyone who still thinks Fedora is representative of Desktop Linux as a whole is years out of date.

Fedora is so extreme about security because that’s how they wanted it to be, and that’s how it’s always been. It wasn’t designed for everyone. Don’t complain about a Linux OS doing exactly what it’s designed to do. If you don’t like it, try another OS.

  18. Marc Perkel says:

I log in as root because I am GOD.

  19. Christopher_T says:

What’s her IP address? And what port do I log onto? lol 😉

  20. Don says:

    # 20 What’s her IP address? And what port do I log onto? lol

No, the important question is, “Does she have any back doors?”

    Don

  21. Chris Mac says:

    Frankly Don.. I’m thinkin yes..

  22. Uncle Patso says:

I never bothered to learn how to use vi — I’d get a few lines into the intro and my brain would do a core dump. If I absolutely HAVE to edit some text config file, pico is plenty good enough for me.

I guess I’ve always thought of the various Red Hat incarnations as the “standard” Linux. I guess that mantle has been passed, but to where? Ubuntu?

Gnome is too pretty for me, too much of the machinery is hidden away from view. I suppose I’ll have to try Ubuntu some day, but for now FC4 does most of what I need from my Linux box.

  23. Hmeyers says:

@#8 “Lol, the fact is that Linux will never be widespread, people are becoming less and less intelligent, ressourceful and computer savvy; explaining the recent skyrocketing market share of the mac platform (ZING). In 10 years, something else that isn’t Windows will probably be the majority operating system (although Windows will still be very important, especially for legacy business apps).

Microsoft has entered into one of those IBM-like stages of gradual decline. Google knows and understands this.

Signs of a company reaching a plateau:

#1. All new ventures end with either failure or limited success (Zune). The XBox is in many ways an exception to this except I think they still haven’t made any $$$ from it.

#2. Inability to increase market share (Windows, IE, Office are all in decline).

#3. Announcements get ignored or quickly forgotten (“We’re getting serious about search! And this time we mean it!”).

One reason that Windows will decline faster is that the age of specialized devices is coming (set top boxes, tablets, smart phones, and on and on.)

Big manufacturers like HP, Dell, etc. can either pay Microsoft to do the hardware specific coding or they can just use Linux and have their own engineers do it and cut out the middle man and not need to worry about licensing.

  24. brian t says:

Totally agree with the “no root” rule in working multiuser systems, but on my “test” (Ubuntu) Linux system at home, I have a compromise: root login on text console only, never GUI. That’s my way of reminding myself “if I go in as root, it’s Serious”.

One more thing: if you have “sudo” but not “su” available: “sudo bash” is handy.

  25. DCI Gene Hunt says:

I agree that logging in as root is just silly unless you really need to … Its a bit like driving without a seatbelt: even if you think are the best driver in the world, it can still have your life!

I’d love Linux to be my desktop, but there is always something that stops it (at the moment its trying to get two monitors to work on the right resolutions). I’ve plenty of experience running Windows and Linux servers, and I cannot think of any reason why I’d want a Windows server other than the possible exception of groupware (and that maybe just because I’ve never looked at Linux’ groupware offering).

I have the feeling the closest Linux will ever come to a popular desktop environment is Mac OSX …..

  26. Stupid says:

    Stupid tip and stupid story.

    Get a grip!

  27. Chris Heath says:

“I have the feeling the closest Linux will ever come to a popular desktop environment is Mac OSX”

Not to sound like a asshole, but you do know that OSX is not Linux, right?

Assuming you do know that, then what are you saying? Not at all then?

Is that like saying the closest you’ll get to going to your family reunion is going to your friend’s family reunion?

  28. Gold Fish says:

NSFW!? What happen to the fair warning you used to give…

  29. bdcapps says:

I feel your pain, but your issue will not be fixed in a year. Linux distros are not legally allowed to bundle proprietary video card drivers. It’s unfortunate, but you have to download the proper nvidia or ati drivers from their site after installing linux to fully utilize your graphics card. It’s not hard, but it sucks and can have some nasty side effects. As a linux user I hate this, but what can you do.

  30. Tooki says:

I have to say I have no problems with the picture other than the fact that I tend to read this blog on my laptop at school. Please try to keep things more SFW (or school) in the future.
