Geri Moss with Ladamien

TAMPA – A Bay Area 5-month-old is a lucky guy after being brought to the hospital last week with a condition called water intoxication.

Ladamien Barton’s mom says she wasn’t getting enough cans of baby formula through the WIC program, so she was stretching it out.

Directions say mix six scoops with eight ounces of water, but mom Geri Moss said she was mixing four scoops to 14 ounces of water instead.

She didn’t realize that was a no-no until Ladamien developed seizures and couldn’t breathe.

“He was off in a daze, he wasn’t following my hand, he started screaming,” Moss recalled. “He curled up in a ball. I went to lift him up but he stopped breathing. As soon as he stopped breathing, I put him on his back and started doing CPR.”

“Another hour he would have been dead,” offered UCH pediatrician Dr. James Orlowski.

Ladamien?!

    #26, Stupidie,

you are also under the assumption that that kid is her first and only!

Do you have any evidence this is not her only child?

I’m sorry but something fishy must be going on if she can’t get off her ass to obtain more food for her child. Beg, borrow or steal honey!

Good attitude. Begging is illegal in most jurisdictions. Borrowing with no hope of repayment is usually called fraud. Stealing, well, that one is obvious. For some reason those that feel so superior want this woman to break the law to feed her child. Great solution !!!

If that was my child (God knows his name wouldn’t be Ladamien) I would be selling what I could: furniture, blood, plasma… and yes… the last resort, if ya’ know what I mean.

And thankfully the child is not yours.

She kinda looks like one of the Hanson brothers waaaaay back in the day.

As if her credibility rests entirely upon your view of her physical appearance.

WIC and Healthy Families were instituted for people like her. So the child can be brought up in a safe and healthy home. That includes a home with furniture and a mother not out selling herself or in jail. It appears that you expect this mother to stoop to the lowest point you have no problem with. The problem with that is she would then be not only in danger of losing her child, but probably would.

I know several Social Workers at our local Healthy Families. Apparently this happens quite often. WIC runs out of money so they start rationing baby formula or they believe the mother is breast feeding and compensate for that. Not every mother can breast feed and not every baby can learn to latch. The mother does the best she can and dilutes the formula.

Fact check. I just saw this woman (yes, you heard me right) on the Today show. She has one other child. She sounded pretty normal to me, just with a dire financial situation. Husband has been out of work and she was desperate to stretch what little food she had. She was ignorant of the peril she was putting he baby in.

This should have been an educational piece, or a commentary on hard economic times. I am pretty disgusted with the tone of the comments I just read.

    #32, Bill,

    Thank you for sharing.

  4. Stephanie says:

Yeah thanks Bill. Who looks “stupid” now Mr. Fusion?

Clearly you are a man because you don’t understand the maternal instincts that come into play when you have a child. If I asked 100 new moms what they would do if they couldn’t afford their infants food, they would tell you that they would do anything! This isn’t Darfur. This is the freakin’ US. If this lady walked up to any WalMart and saw a fellow mother and told them she was watering down her babies formula, I bet she wouldn’t walk away without someone buying her some. Even worse that she has a husband and another child.

Reproduction should be a privilege, not a right! But let me take it to the next stage, you have a baby and you can’t give it what it needs… even on welfare for God’s sake, give the child to someone who can provide for it. That is unconditional love.

  5. Rick Cain says:

No problem just add melamine! After all Bush now allows acceptable amounts of melamine in baby formulas.
    Good for those kidneys!

    Are you a mother?

  7. Vbabe says:

Why is the mother not breast-feeding? She has all the nutrition her baby needs and yet she chooses the feed the baby watered-down powder – I don’t get it. Does she not understand what breasts are for? Is she too ill to breastfeed?

  8. Mr. Fusion says:

    #34, Stephanie,

What you are proposing is liable to have her thrown in jail for trespassing and having Child Services take her child.

You iterate the standard neo-con line and expect all to be right. It doesn’t happen that way. People lose their jobs. Money does get tight. And you are the kind that should never have children. For the children’s sake.

  9. Stephanie says:

First off, no I am not a mother. But I work in an office full of new moms. I have many friends who are new moms. I am vicariously a mom. I don’t have to squeeze a child out to know how to be fiercely protective and willing to do anything to make sure that a life I am solely responsible for survives. I am already that way and adding a child would make it 10 times stronger.

And once again Mr. Fusion, you want to put everyone in a cookie cutter mold. I am far from being a neo-con. I have been accused of being everything now! First it was an angry liberal to this! I don’t have to cling to labels like yourself. I can look at each issue and make a decision on my stance based on the situation rather than subscribing to a set of beliefs imposed on me by association. I don’t know how you can function in the world by constantly making assumptions that turn out to be FALSE! Oh and I bet it is really hard for you to admit when you are wrong too. Maybe YOU shouldn’t be the one procreating.

You are the one that actually sounds more conservative based off of your rebuttals saying that the woman should follow the rules of society by not begging, borrowing or stealing… let alone asking for help through the “improper” channels outside of welfare. That is just too much! But nearly killing your helpless infant through water poisoning is just peachy! Whoopsie!

My parents had some hard times in the 80’s. There was a rough economy then too ya know. They weren’t f$*#@^! stupid though and asked for help. And if one avenue doesn’t work out, try another. There are more resources out there than just WIC.

I am surprised that your Darwinian beliefs aren’t kicking in just saying that evolution is hard at work! =)
