OTTAWA – Researchers say they have located the world’s oldest stash of marijuana, in a tomb in a remote part of China.

The cache of cannabis is about 2,700 years old and was clearly “cultivated for psychoactive purposes,” rather than as fibre for clothing or as food, says a research paper in the Journal of Experimental Botany.

The 789 grams of dried cannabis was buried alongside a light-haired, blue-eyed Caucasian man, likely a shaman of the Gushi culture, near Turpan in northwestern China.

The extremely dry conditions and alkaline soil acted as preservatives, allowing a team of scientists to carefully analyze the stash, which still looked green though it had lost its distinctive odour.

    More like a light-haired, RED-eyed Caucasian man… AMIRITE!?

  2. AC_in_Mich says:

So, how’d they know his eyes were blue? (And maybe a lil red, too)

#2. very dry place, central desert, 325ft below sea level, moisture quickly sublimates, tissue rapidly mummifies. I saw mummified seals in Antarctica, hard as rock, totally dessicated, thousands of years old, looked like they had just died. That hashish would be of (academic) interest to a lot of biologists.

I like the flying saucer just to the right of the word “Pot” on the insignia.

  5. John E. Quantum says:

    Two things come to mind-

    1. Even 2,700 years ago, cannabis got them through times of no money better than money got them through times of no cannabis.

    2. Today, science is a victim once again of political ignorance and superstition.

  6. Daniel Kaiser says:

#3 Although hashish is a byproduct of pot hashish and pot are two different things.

789 grams that’s about 28oz or about 1.7 pounds, obviously possession with intent to sell, I see didn’t any mention of baggies and a scale though so it could be for personal use.

  7. fulanoche says:

2700 years! I can’t get my stash to last 27 days.

  8. eyeofthetiger says:

#6 There was archery equipment found. The mummy might have to spend another couple hundred years in a forced Chinese labor camp for re-education.

  16. rzwo says:

Are they sure it wasn’t Jeff Spicoli??

  17. Rich says:

I understand your eyes turn red from use of doobie. But I watched a girl “partake” once and her eyes went different directions, sort of a walleyed effect. Is that normal?

  18. Glenn E. says:

Maybe what they found was the world’s first time traveling hippie. Along with his own special stash, that made the trip possible. Better than a Deloran, eh?

  19. Mr. Fusion says:

This pot was all for medical use. Seriously, pot has been used for its antiseptic, analgesic, and tranquilizing properties for several millennium.

Kids today !!! They think they invented sex AND pot.

Hey you kids !!! Get off my lawn. Leave that grass alone.
