Nov. 27 (Bloomberg) General Motors Corp., criticized by U.S. lawmakers for its use of corporate jets, asked aviation regulators to block the public’s ability to track a plane it uses.

“We availed ourselves of the option as others do to have the aircraft removed” from a Federal Aviation Administration tracking service, a GM spokesman, Greg Martin, said yesterday in an interview. He declined to discuss why GM made the request.

Those slimy bastards.

Makes it too easy to track which companies they are flying to in desparation to sell out to…

  2. mister mustard says:

This will make no difference, once they auction the planes off on eBay as part of the bailout deal.

They ARE going to auction the plane off? Right?

  3. Paul says:

Seriously, the government needs to take action against these guys. The government should worry about the little guy who is getting the raw end on this one. It is not merely bad enough that these guys show up in the private jet to beg for money, but they did not have a plan as to how they would use the money from the bailout (The Disciplined Investor Podcast http://www.thedisciplinedinvestor.com/blog/category/podcasts/). Think about that. Why do they deserve to be bailed out?

So, what is my solution? They give up the jet, they sell their houses, and they save the company. If they cannot save it then they make sure that each and every employee has 6 months severance, and the upper management loses their parachute. If the government keeps bailing these incompetent people out of their mistakes it will only drag out this recession. Why not put money into Tesla or other startups that are actually producing vehicles that run on alternative energy? GM you have had your run. You messed up, and now it is time to step aside to let other American companies do what you should have been doing. Bu Bye

  4. Mongo says:

The blocking request is only unusal in that GM hadn’t doen it already. It’s another sign of the incompitence of GM mananagement.

It’s fairly common for corporate jets to request being blocked for privacy reasons.

Otherwise, Wall Street sleuths could see the jet going to an airport near another corp’s HQ make inferences about future acquisitions or mergers, and make profits on trades based on information not available to the public.

  5. Its beyond comprehension
No business plan to begin with as the Japanese auto industry begins their carefully planned methodological attack on the US Auto Industry
    that is more than successful
The US auto industry along with the unions continue their abuse of the us consumer as if going to last forever
Now when they should be ashamed of themselves for exposing their selves and their lack of preparation in any manner by going to demand money with no business plan or documents whatsoever in unison this.
They sure know how to take care of themselves though
    Have they no shame ?

  6. DavyB says:

Put a lien on them and ground their planes – they owe too much already to the treasury and others.

Its done all the time when aircraft fuel or landing fee charges bounce.

  7. Bob says:

Once again this is why they should be allowed to fail. The entire industry is corrupt from the CEO’s to the unions, all of them have had a hand in destroying their companies. The government should give them all the big middle finger. No bailout for bad decisions.

  8. OvenMaster says:

If these guys are asking for government money, they should be arriving in DC on Amtrak.

  9. Special Ed says:

Hey, the jet is leased, I don’t have a problem with that. If it flies, fucks or floats – rent it!

  10. Paddy-O says:

    # 7 DavyB said, “Put a lien on them and ground their planes – they owe too much already to the treasury and others. ”

They have outstanding loan payments to the US Gov’t?

  11. RTaylor says:

Due to this awful press, it will difficult for Congress to weigh in against so much public rage. Like Hollywood celebrities, these guys lives in their own little world, and don’t have a clue. Amy money thrown at Detroit would be a waste, not that it ever stopped Congress before. It would be better to offer $10,000 rebates on certain model cars directly to consumers. Let the consumer vote.

  12. Pop says:

I agree with the GM guys: the government or the public have no business tracking their flights.

Problem for them is: the government and the public also have no business giving money to those companies.

  13. deowll says:

This company needs new blood at the top.

  14. Lou says:

Cut them off for the welfare check.

  15. gquaglia says:

The best part is, Pelosi and Co will give them the bail out and it will back to business as usual. Wonder how many millions the CEO of GM will get as a bonus this year for securing the funds to protect his and his fellow executive’s life style.

  16. RSweeney says:

Yeah, let’s have the government put GPS locators on them, bug their cars (limo’s?) and mansions (houses?) and see what the righteous can turn up to toast them.

Aren’t you guys the ones who oppose government tracking?

Or is it that you oppose tracking when it might be terrorists, but support it when in might be incompetent capitalists?

  17. Mister Mustard says:

    #17 – Sweeney Todd

Pffffft. The bums aren’t being singled out for tracking; the “tracking” is available to the public at flightaware dot com. Anyone can be tracked. It’s more like they’re asking to be allowed to put black tape over the license plate on their cars (or remove them), so no one can tell what they’re up to.

And even if they WERE being tracked, big woop. Frequently, when people cry poverty and apply for welfare, more scrutiny is given to their “personal” business, to insure that they’re not pissing the taxpayer money away on liquor and whores. Same thing here, except instead of asking for $150/wk they’re asking for $25,000,000,000.00 in taxpayer money, and chances are good that they ARE pissing the money away on liquor and whores.

#9 – Ovenmaster – “…they should be arriving in DC on Amtrak.”

Amtrak – Another successful government subsidized enterprise.

  19. its me says:

Well I guess I still own 1 share of GM, so can I request (demand) to reinstate the public’s ability to track my plane loaned to GM management uses?

    Yes, notice.

“He criticized the union because union officers and their wives used a $3-million private jet for personal purposes. “Mrs. Hanley was the only passenger on each of these flights [between her homes in Chicago and Palm Springs] which were apparently authorized by President Hanley,”

  23. ColinHowe says:

Not a single complaing about Citi’s fleet of private jets huh? And they can get billions overnight with no plan, no public hearings, nothing.

The double standard here is mind boggling.

Hey, great link! Great link to a bullshit hit article full of bullshit. If you have an opinion, then please share. Linking to someone else’s bullshit is just proof that you can’t think for yourself and have no idea of the difference between opinion and fact. The first clue that this was bullshit is the piece is not dated.

As JP wrote, it wasn’t the unions that arrived on the planes. But the idiots and assholes like you that blame the unions for everything are the ones that drove the economy into the ground. America became great and as powerful as it was because of unions. Unions gave us eight hour days, health care, pensions, job security, and decent pay. That decent pay was spent in other sectors and created a huge economy. Education soared. The Nation’s health improved. We fed the world with America’s advances.

When your kind of moran decided that “greedy, useless unions” could be avoided by shipping the jobs overseas, the end of our economy started. Countries that kept their economies mostly have avoided the worst of the Chinese influx.

  26. Mr. Fusion says:

    #24, Colin,

Good point. It must be kept in mind however, it isn’t the jets. It is the image that is the problem.

No, more like just read your handle to get a suggestion of what I think of your intelligence.
