“And the winner is… “

Her figure is flattered by an almost-there hemline. Heels, three-inch. Hair, teased. Makeup, porcelain doll smooth.

As co-host of a preliminary Miss Texas pageant held Sunday night in Dallas, Ms. Nova was all woman — except for one thing. She’s a man.

Therein lies the problem. That and the pageant venue: a gay bar.

“I didn’t know a drag queen was going to have that prominent of a role,” said Jean Magness, executive director of the Miss Texas Organization, who watched over the Miss Oak Cliff/Miss Oak Lawn Area pageant at the Oak Lawn lounge The Rose Room. “The question was Cassie’s involvement. Was it appropriate? For me and other board members present, that was a major concern.”

In the days before and since the pageant, a controversy caught wind.

On one side, the local competition’s director and others say beauty pageants have long been the dominion of gay men. They supervise wardrobes, style hair and for whatever reason, seem to have a knack for coquettish walks down the runway. On the other, some contestants and their mothers say nowhere are gender roles more defined than at a beauty pageant — an on-stage display of poise, grace and conventional femininity.

I can’t think of a better venue for a beauty pageant.

So. . .the Miss Teen Texas people rented out a bar in the Oak Lawn area of Dallas, and they were surprised it was a gay bar?

They’ve apparently been living in Dallas/Fort Worth for about eight minutes.

We are all part female and part male it is just the plumbing that gets in the way.Get Over It!!!

  3. DCI Gene Hunt says:

Eddy Izzard (pictured above) is not a drag queen! … I mean, okay, he likes to wear makeup and dress in women’s clothing, but he is soooooo funny! Saying Eddy Izzard is just a drag queen is like saying JJ Cale is just a guitarist….

  4. turbo says:

It’s better than the Hooters I guess. The clients at the bar will just tell them they aren’t as pretty as they think and give them style tips.

A few weeks ago, I saw a poster for this event in a Starbucks in uptown Dallas. Though the picture of Mr/Ms Nova was small and grainy, I couldn’t help but think that she was a he. Then I thought, “Nah. This is Texas. No way would a drag queen host a beauty pageant.” I have to say, after a year in the Big D, this place still finds ways to amaze me.

I agree #1. If you get to Oak Lawn and can’t figure out that you are on the gay friendly side of town, you should of got off at a different bus stop! For all y’all non-Dallas knowledgeable folks, if you want to see a damn good drag show, the Rose Room is where it’s at… especially on Halloween.

Of course if it were in Oak Cliff, they might get shot or mugged for their tiaras.

Dallas is such a train wreck. This is no worse than the school district making up fake SS#’s for their employees with pending visas!

Where’s Hank Hill, when we need him?

  8. Mister Mustard says:

Nothing down in Texas but steers and queers.

  9. ECA says:

    FUNNY..
Which would you rather have GOGGLING/DROOLING over your teen doll?
A gay, or an OVER AGED CHILD MOLESTER??

  10. Mr. Fusion says:

It sounds to me like some people are just a little jealous.

Well duh! If it were done by hetero men all the pageant contestants would wear would be empty flour sacs with cutouts for the holes where the men can stick their penises into.

  12. amodedoma says:

I’ve seen men that move with more femininity than most women, and women that move with more masculinity than most men. I saw some amazing young men on Bugi street in Singapore. Back before they built the shopping mall there was a cool open air market. At an open air bar restaurant a rather large group of drag queens put on an amazing show, that almost had me doubting my own sexuality.

  13. Dallas says:

Another example of going to the beach and then shocked at seeing so many weird people with skimpy outfits. Oh my, there ought to be a law.

I do understand how parents may be unhappy in such a setting for their beautiful daughter but naivety is at faulty here.

Lesson #1272 – Don’t go to free pageant night at gay bar for daughter’s debutante rehearsal.

  14. great article. I will bookmark this
