It was a “dark, evil wave” that almost killed him, but for Australian surfer Kerby Brown, riding this 40-foot monster in his own backyard was one of the highlights of his surfing career.

The 25-year-old surfed the enormous break at an outdoor reef in the Southern Ocean “somewhere between Margaret River and South Australia” on the southwest coast of Western Australia last August.

Local surfers discovered the break — the exact location of which they want to keep secret — after deep-sea fisherman alerted them to the amazing waves they had seen about 9 miles off the coast.

This wave had to start someplace..
and a WAVE that BIG, had to go in more then 1 direction..
Unless this is a Pic of the Wave that destroyed ALLOT of island and lowlands in the Indian ocean..I will have to say PHOOEY.

What is an “outdoor reef”? Or maybe a better question would be, what is an indoor reef?

  4. Jopa says:

    I used to surf.
A wave like this must be one of the most frightening experiences for a surfer. You REALLY need to know your stuff, or a monster like that will kill you on the spot.

    I salute this surfer.

Your usually faster than that John.

  6. Floyd says:

Surfing that wave is only slightly less stupid than jumping off the Eiffel Tower.

Here’s a pic of the Waves near were I surfed.

I never got to that level of surfing. I’m still alive…

    #3 ECA..

You don’t know anything about the Southern Ocean, do you? The Southern Ocean is unique in the world in the fact that it as unlimited reach. That is, a wave can travel around the world without being stopped. In winter king waves are pretty common.

I used to live down in the SW corner of Australia, near Margeret River where this place is. And king waves to knock people off the rocks (usually while fishing) and sweep them out to sea.

    This is the real deal.

WOW I have seen big waves but those are some real mosters. You can have bigger waves. Near Maui a place called Jaws can have waves upwards of 60′ scary but real
