The Consumerist – A Wal-Mart in Southern California is selling $1.00 face paint – “No Smear Makeup Crayons” – for kids’ Halloween costumes. And they’re not even trying to hide it – the front of the package states that the product that is a “choking hazard”, and CONTAINS LEAD! which is “known to the state of California to cause birth defects.”

  1. The Monster's Lawyer says:

I loved Bag-O-Glass as a youngster. Hours of fun.

  2. Paddy-O says:

“Wal Mart selling lead based Halloween face paint and it doesnt appear to be Made in China!”

Umm, show the whole package front and back. It doesn’t appear to be made in any country when you omit the data…

[Follow the link, the picture was too large for this format – ed.]

  3. McCullough says:

My favorite was Johnny Flame On (bag of oily rags, and a zippo lighter).

  4. Special Ed says:

I was hired as a face painter at a street fair once. I was fired after a few hours, all I had was a can of brown spray paint.

  5. Paddy-O says:

Well, it appears to be made specifically for the CA market.

  6. comhcinc says:

warning on the label. i don’t see a problem with this.

  7. Paddy-O says:

#6 Correct. The data is being supplied to the potential buyer. So, no harm.

  8. mthrnite says:

Do not taunt No Smear Makeup Crayons.

  9. The Monster's Lawyer says:

    #8 m – I love “Super Fun Ball”!

  10. Rich says:

I held one of those in my hands this morning. I work at a Wal-Mart in Ohio.

  11. Rick Cain says:

It only has 100 times the allowed amount of lead. Now if it had 10,000 times the amount allowed, the EPA might pull it off the shelves, as long as China doesn’t get offended.

  12. Igeek says:

100 time? I doubt it. It probably contains a negligible amount of lead but Calif laws require that kind of warning on just about anything with even the slightest quantity of what they think is an offending element. They have those same kind of warnings posted in bars here but nobody’s leaving because of them. Hell most any retail store has that kind of warning posted at the door. Nanny state!

  13. Paddy-O says:

#13 Yes, prop 65 is the offending piece of legislation I think. And yes, the signs are pretty much everywhere.

  14. James Hill says:

It’s about time to toughen up America’s youth.

You know, for the coming draft and all…

  15. The Monster's Lawyer says:

#15 James – There are soldiers dying right this minute from lead poisoning thanks to your man “the decider”. Maybe you think that’s funny too.

  16. Elwood Pleebus says:

    oh yeah, Invisible Pedestrian!

They only wear the paint for one night, right? Or at least the non-Darwin Award contestants.

  17. Jägermeister says:

    #15 – James “Chickenhawk” Hill

    Why aren’t you in Iraq?

  18. James Hill says:

#16 – I think it’s funny you consider me to be a supporter of the current administration simply because I destroy liberals. That’s one of the reasons it is so easy to own you guys.

#18 – Because the upper 10% don’t fight the wars, we manipulate those that do. Just because the caste system sucks is no reason to get pissy.

  19. Jägermeister says:

    #19 – James “Chickenhawk” Hill

    Your friends…

  20. KevinL says:

Tons of money to be made in permitting and disposal of hazardous waste. Or maybe California rats aren’t as hardy as others in animal testing.

Of course this is nothing compared to the fees involved in permitting and offset of carbon footprints and credits.

  21. deowll says:

I’ve seen the same warning on computer wiring. I wouldn’t eat it but I suspect that California has a very low tolerance. Most likely much lower than the Feds allow.

You couldn’t sell my lawn mower there either.

  22. joe biotech says:

As I understand it, the State of California requires a bag of sand to be labeled as a potential carcinogen, because silica dust might cause cancer in miners. Not that I’ve seen a bag of sand labeled thus.

  23. valerian says:

it is for kids! kids do not give birth yet ! it will eventually evaporate from their body or they get resistant to it…

  24. Me says:

I stuck them in my mouth to get them wet assuming they were safe since they were sold at Walmart.

  25. James Hill says:

#20, #21 – You failed in this thread too. Another win for your master, James Hill.
