Terrorist ‘tweets’? US Army warns of Twitter dangers
Eye-roller of the day.

A draft US Army intelligence report has identified the popular micro-blogging service Twitter, Global Positioning System maps and voice-changing software as potential terrorist tools.

The report by the 304th Military Intelligence Battalion, posted on the website of the Federation of American Scientists (FAS), examines a number of mobile and web technologies and their potential uses by militants.

The posting of the report on the FAS site was reported Friday by Wired magazine contributing editor Noah Shachtman on his national security blog “Danger Room” at wired.com.

The report is not based on clandestine reporting but drawn from open source intelligence known as OSINT.

A chapter on “Potential for Terrorist Use of Twitter” notes that Twitter members sent out messages, known as “Tweets,” reporting the July Los Angeles earthquake faster than news outlets and activists at the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis used it to provide information on police movements.

“Twitter has also become a social activism tool for socialists, human rights groups, communists, vegetarians, anarchists, religious communities, atheists, political enthusiasts, hacktivists and others to communicate with each other and to send messages to broader audiences,” the report said.

Uh oh. Centcom has discovered the internet.

  2. Mac Guy says:

What a bunch of horseshit. Guess what. Terrorists have now started using this newfangled invention called the “telephone,” as well as its cousin the “cell phone.”

Will they someday ban pen and paper?

  3. zorkor says:

Part of the World problems is the US army. The are nothing but street thugs with Army uniforms sent to foreign countries on so called freedom missions. What these losers do in the foreign countries is a black spot on the name of freedom.

Be it child rapes in Japan, Abu Ghraib Jail in Iraq, carpet bombing of civilians in Afghanistan and constant threats of war against Iran. It makes clear that US is not danger to the world peace but US army is.

  4. Miguel says:

    Oooooooooo, vegetarians…. Danger!

  5. ECA says:

    Ummm,
Has anyone ever looked into the use of CELLPHONES on the battle front??
If you think about recent cellphones:
    Features..
    ABLE TO BE TRACKED/TRACED.

Even if you only used Cell towers, you could get a general location of Anyone with one.

NOW lets get basic and SIMPLE..
Radio signals, on OPEN terrain can travel MILES.
If you know the range of Frequencies, we could track EVERY SINGLE person out there.
I dont care if you use DIGITAL, as I aint listening to your calls, ALL I WANT IS TO LOCATE YOU and set a trap< or send a mortar in your direction..

  6. STEVE says:

PEOPLE CAN USE DVORACK COMMENTS FOR TERRORIST ACTIVITIES TOO.

CODE WORD: THE BLUE DARK BARKS AT NOON COULD MEAN TO ATTACK

  7. soundwash says:

what horsecrap. -basically…the Net is a control-freak’s worst nightmare..

unfortunately, these are just the “warmup rounds” the DHS,NAS Army/whatever are getting us used to seeing so when they finally plant the “defining” message that leads to the next terror/crisis, they’ll have all the ammo they need to shut down “xx” service..and eventually, the internet on the whole..

-and yet..i’d even go near a democratic politician/ideolgy with a ten foot pole..go figure..

LOL;) Welcome to the end of the party republicans. In just a few week these dictatorial powers will be in the hands of DailyKos;)

It is hilarious how you guys supported all this kind of crap, and worse, when you lacked the forsight that somedays the unlimited power of the government would never be used upon you. But not that that reality is impending and immanent, ya’ll have turned against it.

LOL, I can’t wait until the first Republican terrorist cell burns down their church full of parishioners or drives a truck bomb up to a federal building.

We will get weeks of footage of the military tearing your guns out of your cold dead hands.

    I CANT WAIT!!

Already happened – Oklahoma City. Unless you think McVey was a vegatarian communist radical muslim

  10. Cap'nKangaro says:

#8 No, it means the pizza is ready. The red dog barks at noon means attack.

But really, a plastic spork could be a terrorist tool. Maybe the guys (and gals) of the 304th Military Intellegence Battalion had lots of time on their hands and needed to have “product” to show how busy they are.

“basically…the Net is a control-freak’s worst nightmare..” Yep; And we like it that way.

  12. brendal says:

That explains why Twitter is down all the time…

    Political “Enthusiasts” ??? WTF ???

  15. PoliticalEnthusaist says:

Uh oh, because I am a political enthusiast, whatever that means, the Army might be tracking my every movement and communication… on this web site!!

Blogs like this are fostering political enthusiasm!!

    Oh my.

  16. anon says:

could this be because Obama tweets so much & has an army of followers on Twitter & Friendfeed?
