The Republican National Committee has spent more than $150,000 to clothe and accessorize vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her family since her surprise pick by John McCain in late August.

According to financial disclosure records, the accessorizing began in early September and included bills from Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis and New York for a combined $49,425.74.

The records also document a couple of big-time shopping trips to Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, including one $75,062.63 spree in early September.

The RNC also spent $4,716.49 on hair and makeup through September after reporting no such costs in August.

Politico asked the McCain campaign for comment, explicitly noting the $150,000 in expenses for department store shopping and makeup consultation that were incurred immediately after Palin’s announcement. Pre-September reports do not include similar costs.

The campaign does not comment on strategic decisions regarding how financial resources available to the campaign are spent,” she said.

Later on they backed down and said the goodies will go to charity after the election. Poor Sarah. She doesn’t get to keep the Party favors.

OTOH, if they put her outfits up on eBay, I’ll bet they turn a profit.

  1. grog says:

damn that’s some expensive lipstick on that pitbull.

show’s that she really understand folks like joe the plumber who definitely spends like that on his wife.

  2. I says:

“OTOH, if they put her outfits up on eBay, I’ll bet they turn a profit.”

God only knows how much Rush Limbaugh will pay for the underwear.

  3. I also says:

“A review of similar records for the campaign of Democrat Barack Obama and the Democratic National Committee turned up no similar spending.”

I bet Joe Biden was annoyed when he had to pay for his own hair plugs.

  4. GOP Headquarters says:

That is nothing compared to what we spent on John to make him seem non-dead. Luckily, we are getting the public to pay for all of his clothes, makeup, and cosmetic procedures.

  5. brendal says:

Before we go piling on the Republicans exclusively…some reporter ought to be going through the DNC’s expenditures to find out what is being spent to clothe the Obamas and Bidens. (And whether the DNC has bought a muzzle to keep Joe’s mouth shut until the election.)

  6. She would have saved the campaign a lot of money if she had gone with Hillary’s colorful pantsuit maker. HAR!

So what’s next? complaining that she has too many shoes in the closet? or that she wears too much makeup. How many stereotypical complaints are left to use?

I think someone’s afraid to attack the substance so they go after appearance…

  8. grog says:

#6 actually this is just icing on the cake.

palin has consistently shown lack of foreign affairs knowledge, john mccain’s tax policies would drive us deeper into hock with the chinese, and if mccain/palin win, we’ll be guranteed at least 4 more years of $10bn/mo. war in iraq.

besides, it slaps the average working guy/gal right in the face to know that while she’s courtin’ votes among the wal-mart crowd, she’s shopping like lifestyles of the rich and famous.

    it’s like, she’s a … wait for it … a celebrity!!

    ooooh, for teh win!

    just sayin.

  9. Olo Baggins of Bywater says:

#6 says: this is the best you can come up with

No. Look back at the dozens of posts regarding topics of substance.

As for the post, she had to spend all that money because all they have in Wasilla is a Walmart. You know, where Joe Sixpack and Joe the Plumber and Tito the builder shop. But, she’s gonna get in there, run the Senate and fight for the American people in some smokin’ hot maverick clothes. You betcha.

  10. Brian says:

But I thought that Obama and the Dems were supposed to be the elitists?

Typical republican reaction: what about the Democrats?

Instead of addressing these ridiculous expenses, they go after the Dems?

    Morons.

  11. Mr. Fusion says:

    #6, Paul,

Is that the best the neo-cons can do? Invent connections when there aren’t any? Crab on about a racist preacher while being unable to find anything racist in his speeches, sermons, or writing? Smearing ACORN while denying voter fraud and registration fraud in the thousands? Redistribute the wealth ???Geeze, you guys are pathetic. You give all honorable conservatives a bad name.

    *

This is quite possibly illegal as the FEC does not allow personal use of campaign contributions. But hey, what does the right wing nuts care. They would rather smear others that stand in their way.

  12. killer duck says:

As Adam Curry says, politics is just show biz for ugly people. Its a sad testament to state of the American voter, that the campaign would think they need to spend that sort of money to stay competitive. Why bother with substance when most studies show people pick their candidate based on looks and first impression.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. $150K was probably a good ROI, and I like the idea of selling on ebay…that’s freaking brilliant.

  13. Breetai says:

I dunno KD, I think Adam is close but Nahhh. I got it! Elections are a beauty Pageant for Ugly People.

  14. Winston Smith says:

“It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign.”

That’s our story and we’re sticking with it.

  15. Buzz says:

The actual cost to dress and coif Palin is much higher than reported for September.

  16. Flip Wilson says:

Well heck the RNC had to dress her up, don’t you think that if she wore baby seal pelts, or polar bear fur, or stunk of Salmon, or huskies, or some other rancid materials that she would put off the rest of America?

Frankly her wardrobe would have been by far the least offensive element of the McCain campaign?

  17. moss says:

    #2 wins!

  18. brm says:

    #8 grog:

“we’ll be guranteed at least 4 more years of $10bn/mo. war in iraq”

If the Dems get us out of Iraq in less than four years, I’ll give you a pony. Furthermore, of the Dems don’t get us all wrapped up in “humanitarian” missions in countries like Darfur, I’ll jump off a building.

  19. MikeN says:

Wow they spent as much on clothes as Obama spent for his Greek columns.

  20. Terry says:

The Republicans are spending too much money on Sarah and her wardrobe, while neglecting the rest of her family. They still don’t know how to best allocate their resources. Check out Doug Stanhope’s blog (http://www.dougstanhope.com) and help contribute to his fundraising effort to buy Bristol Palin an abortion. He’s already raised over $500!

  21. Dallas says:

Aside from the $150K in liptick, I demand to know why Palin …

    (1) used tax dollars for her evil spawn daughters to party in $800 hotels?

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/sns-ap-palin-family-travel,0,7233585.story

    (2) want to change the role of the VP of the United State? Why Palin she hate the Constitution?

    http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/10/22/palin-takes-heat-for-saying-vp-in-charge-of-the-senate/

  22. JimD says:

Gee, I wonder how much they will spend on “Joe the Plumber” ??? And if they will buy him a Wrench !!!

  23. Paddy-O says:

#22 “Why Palin she hate the Constitution?”

    What does this mean?

  24. J says:

Holy Fuck! Even my wife doesn’t spend $2500 a day on cloths.

  25. I says:

    #26 “What does this mean?”

It’s a pronoun used to identify a specific person or thing close at hand or being indicated or experienced : is THIS your bag? | he soon knew that THIS was not the place for him.

    No thanks needed.

  26. billabong says:

    Can you say Barbie!

  27. Dallas says:

Seems like a bad week for McCain and it’s only Wednesday !!

Mo: Palin $150K in lip gloss and wart remover
Tu: Palin says VP controls the Senate.
We: GOP convicted felon spills all about GOP dirty politics

“Ex-GOP operative tells cautionary tale about ‘how to rig an election”

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/22/rigging.election/index.html

  28. JMcM says:

Get a life, people! Most of that was for Cindy, not Sarah! Geez.

  29. GigG says:

This is stupid. Do you not think that Obama’s suits are being paid for with campaign money?

  30. Paddy-O says:

#32 People insanely attack that which they are afraid of.

Don’t try to make sense of it.
