F86D’s over New Mexico

Two U.S. fighter planes were scrambled and ordered to shoot down an unidentified flying object over the English countryside during the Cold War, according to secret files made public. One pilot said he was seconds away from firing 24 rockets at the object, which moved erratically and gave a radar reading like “a flying aircraft carrier…”

In a written account, Milton Torres described how he scrambled his F-86 D Saber jet in calm weather from the Royal Air Force base at Manston, Kent in May 1957…

The order came to fire a salvo of rockets at the UFO. The authentication was valid and I selected 24 rockets…

At the last moment, the object disappeared from the radar screen and the high-speed chase was called off.

He returned to base and was debriefed the next day by an unnamed man who “looked like a well-dressed IBM salesman. He threatened me with a national security breach if I breathed a word about it to anyone,” he said…

The files blame other UFO sightings on weather balloons, clouds or normal aircraft. Torres said he has been waiting 50 years for an explanation.

“I shall never forget it,” he told the Times. “On that night I was ordered to open fire even before I had taken off. That had never happened before.”

Of course, world-class security bureaucrats may have simply filed the paperwork after they ordered Torres to shut up. It’s easier to silence someone than to look for answers.

Obviously, a high speed cruise missile or drone… LOL

  2. Sea Lawyer says:

Haha, Adam isn’t such a whacko after all. Of course, how are we going to make friends with the aliens if we keep firing our pea-shooters at them?

  3. Special Ed says:

I guess he didn’t shut up.

  4. What is this about says:

Nothing to see…please be on your way…nothing to see here. Please go shopping and consume. Do not think about it.

  5. god says:

    #3 – RTFA.

  6. lividd says:

oh god, I can hear Adam Curry already.

  7. eyeofthetiger says:

    Operation Paperclip

  8. James Hill says:

But, if they would have shot it down, Obama wouldn’t be coming to save us?

  9. Matt says:

They did shoot it down. Obama is an alien refugee.

  10. LinusVP says:

    I want to believe!

  11. Greg Allen says:

Jets were so cool looking back then.

As for this story — the guy is at an age where I’d question his memory.

  12. sargasso says:

    #11. .. and his motivation.

  13. MikeN says:

A flying aircraft carrier? That can’t be anything manmade.

  14. Roy says:

Where do you stick 24 rockets on a F-86 D Saber jet? Cool story.

  15. hhopper says:

From the National Museum of the USAF:

The interception radar (from Hughes Aircraft Co.) and associated fire-control computed the target’s position, guided the aircraft on an intercept course to within 500 yards of the target, lowered the retractable tray of 24 rockets, and fired the rockets automatically.

  16. JimD says:

Most likely the pilot was a victim of a radar-jamming test by a federal contractor – IBM …

  17. Roy says:

    Thanks hhopper,
    I learn something new everyday.

  18. pjakubo86 says:

This article only mentions that the phenomenon was seen on radar…there was no visual confirmation. Radar glitches all the time. We can make a stealth fighter look like a gold ball on radar screens. Is it really so outrageous to assume that we couldn’t make something look huge on a radar screen? Move on. Nothing to see here.

  19. Mr. Fusion says:

The shoot first before he had even taken off is where I lost him. The probability of that happening is about equal to Alien Space Men visiting surreptitiously 55 years ago.

  20. Special Ed says:

    #5 – Thank you God!

  21. Special Ed says:

#11 – I was chastised by God (#5) for not RTFA. It had nothing to do with his memory or how old the guy was. This story was part of archived data that was released. On the other hand I still think James Hill is an ass monkey.

  22. Jägermeister says:

    You’ve gotta believe</a…

  23. cmcqueen says:

Iraq’s not bad enough – Let’s start a war with another planet.

  24. Self Appointed Genius says:

#23, it’ll be quick and easy. We’ll go in light footed and the Martians will greet us as liberators.

  25. Rico DiPucci says:

Does anyone actually still believe that we’re alone in this universe? That there might be a more civilized, more socially, culturally and technologically advanced race of beings out there? And, with all the in-fighting and other crap we promote here on this planet, is it any wonder that IF we ARE being watched by others, not of this world, that they might not want to get mixed up with us??? I tend to put more weight on what the pilots have to say than what the government tells us about UFOs. LOL

My tin foil hat blew up.
