BBC News – October 13, 2008:

Former Beatle Ringo Starr will no longer sign memorabilia for fans and will throw away all fan mail he receives in the future, he has said.

“Get off my lawn you young whippersnappers!”

“Please do not send fan mail to any address you have,” he said in a video message on his website.

“Nothing will be signed after the 20th of October. If that is the date on the envelope, it’s gonna be tossed.

“I’m warning you with peace and love I have too much to do,” the 68-year-old drummer said.

Dressed in black clothes and dark glasses, Starr said it was “a serious message to everybody watching”.

He added: “No more fan mail and no objects to be signed. Nothing.”

This is weird. I wonder if he’s suffering from depression…?

  2. Dallas says:

Good for him. He wants to retire in peace, I don’t blame him. I will soon stop signing fan mail myself or charge a quarter.

  3. Mongo says:

You gotta wonder how many things he got to sign that came from professionals who were gonna sell them. I’m surprised he was nice for this long.

I agree. Not only the pros but just the regular fans. I bet he gets as many a year as Elvis. I didn’t see the entire posting but perhaps he could have been more politely tactful. After this flak, he’ll probably amend it. As for me, he has more than filled my life with many memorable moments.

  5. Ringo Starr? Ringo Starr gets fan mail? Who the f&ck would send a fan letter to Ringo Starr?

I haven’t even thought about him since he did the vocals for “Yellow Submarine” and “With a Little Help From My Friends”. That was over 40 years ago. Who’s he think he is, the Jonas Brothers?

  6. sargasso says:

He’s doing what they call, “a Yoko”.

  7. knowtalentwhenIseeit says:

George and Ringo had/have no talent at all compared to Lenin and McCartney, so who cares what he does, he sucks anyway.

  8. brian says:

Good for him…I wish all celebrities would do this, and dry up the ebay market for this crap.

  9. Panarra says:

Luckily Marge Simpson already got the thank-you letter for the portrait she sent him.

  10. Pete Best says:

I, on the other hand, will be signing autographs. Log on to my site at http://www.petebest.com/ and give a ring.

Interesting to see that Mister Mustard is thinking about the Jonas Brothers rather than Ringo. It is fans like Mustard who keep those virginal boys on the front page.

  11. Jägermeister says:

Leave him alone… he needs time to practice for his role as Yasser.

  12. jbenson2 says:

What’s up with Mr Mustard. With all his crotchety posts, he comes across as an angry “get off my lawn” old man.

The sun does shine some times.

  13. gquaglia says:

Who gives a shit about this washed up, old, douche.

  14. ibdense says:

    #5 Mr Mustard

    Make that Mean Mr Mustard!

How hilariously ironic that a poster with the handle of Mr Mustard (as in the Beatles song Mean Mr. Mustard) would be so down on a Beatle.

    “Always shouts out something obscene…
    Such a dirty old man”

    Thanks for the giggle.

  15. Hey, what’s with all the picking on Mister Mustard??

Of course I’m “down on the Beatles”. If John Lennon described you as a “bit of crap”, you’d be down on them too.

John said that the song (Mean Mister Mustard” was inspired by a newspaper story about a miser who concealed his cash wherever he could in order to prevent people from forcing him to spend it. He obviously didn’t think highly of the composition, as he described it in Anthology as “a bit of crap I wrote in India.”

Get stuffed, John. And your wife was a no-talent screeching harridan, whose music sounds like bottles being put through a trash compacter.

Maybe I’ll change my name to Polythene Pam.

  16. Dave W says:

George Carlin was right. The wrong two Beatles died. Paul McCartney, while greatly talented, is a pompous ass. His post Beatles music ranges from excellent to garbage like the rest of them, but his sickening sweetness and nasty personal life have left a bad taste. He hasn’t done anything worthwhile since Venus and Mars.

#7. You may know talent when you see it, but Lenin was never known as a musician. He orchestrated something else all together (now). I think you may mean Lennon. :).

Lennon was clearly the most talented as a song writer, singer and philosopher. George Harrison had some great post Beatles work, was an overall good guy, and was the cutest.

Ringo…I could never figure out the fans. Except for the drum solo in “The End” he was very much replaceable.

  17. Mister Ketchup says:

He has fans? Get the fuck out…

  18. Wally the Engineer says:

You know what, God bless him, he’s got a right to say enough is enough.
He, like many other musicians has a job. That job is to be an entertainer. That doesn’t require him to do what ever his fans ask of him, whenever they ask it of him.
He has the right to be left alone, that of course is a double-edged sword. He also has the right to have no one come to his concerts when he goes on tour as well.

  19. Ron Larson says:

What an idiot. All he has to do is start charging and let the market sort it out.

  20. James Hill says:

    See? Twenty hits easy.

  21. optionshiftk says:

I have always felt bad for Ringo because he is often overshadowed by Mccarney and Lennon, but after seeing this video, I hate the guy.

  22. Chris Mac says:

#8 – And here is was thinking the unopened mail bags would be worth more than the signed memorabila.

    (see #5)

  23. Grey says:

It’s not suprising that Ringo has a lot of fans. One, because he’s one of the 2 surviving Beatles. Two, because he is considered to be one of the greatest drummer’s in history.

Have I followed his post-Beatles career? Except for a couple of episodes of Thomas the Tank Engine I watched as a kid, nope. But because of his inspiration to many of the drummers that followed him, I think music in general has benefited from his contributions.

  24. justEd says:

Only normal one in the group. Only one all the the other band members got along with.

  25. Jimbo says:

How do you warn someone with peace and love?

  26. greggyx says:

I’m with Mr Mustard. RIP Ringo Starr

  27. KwadGuy says:
Lennon was clearly the most talented as a song writer, singer and philosopher. George Harrison had some great post Beatles work, was an overall good guy, and was the cutest.
Well, I guess maybe on some other planet, in another universe. Arguably, in his best moments Lennon was McCartney’s equal in songwriting. But there is no possible way to reasonably argue that he was the “most” talented songwriter in the group. George Harrison, while an OK guy, was pretty acerbic and difficult. I can’t believe you’d diss McCartney as a person and then talk about how great Harrison was. And while there’s no right or wrong about taste in men, I don’t think you’d be on the majority side in asserting Harrison is “the cutest”.

Now, as to the Ringo issue. In the eBay era, the autograph seeking leaches have really gotten out of control. It’s all about money now, and there are WAY too many people who spend all their days just trying to get signatures, knowing that each signature from a guy like Ringo Starr can be used to up the value of something by a couple of hundred bucks or more. It’s gross, actually, and if you’re a celebrity of any status, it gets to be REALLY trying. You want to be good to your real fans, but such a large percentage of the autograph seekers are not fans at all…It sounds like Ringo has just had enough of it all.

  28. MikeN says:

Mustard, the mail he’s been receiving is 40 years old. It took him that long to answer it all. Saw it on the Simpson’s.

  29. Angel H. Wong says:

Considering the price of oil is still high he could use those letters as fuel for the heater.

  30. greggyx says:

    MikeN is correct.

Marge waited 40 years for a reply.
    Simpsons can’t be wrong.
    at least Ringo replied.
