ANIMAL rights groups are up in arms over an annual festival in Peru that serves up hundreds of fried CATS to locals. The ‘Gastronomical Festival of the Cat’ – dubbed the ‘Massacre of the Moggies’ – sees townsfolk in Canete, near Lima, feast on the fluffy pets for two days. They believe that eating cat burgers – and fried cat legs and tails – can cure bronchial disease.

It is also believed that feline meat serves as an aphrodisiac.

The cats are bred especially for this festival – which takes place at the end of September on the Day of Santa Ifigenia.

But it has generated fury among animal rights groups.

A PETA spokesman said: ““If Peruvians really eat poor old Moggy because they think his meat cures bronchitis, that’s about as bizarre as it gets, although remember that Asians eat monkey bits thinking that will cure their impotence and even Europeans butcher poor old Bessie the cow or Henny Penny the hen, because they see them as nothing more than a bit of nourishment.

“Having toured slaughterhouses for dogs in Taiwan, horses in Texas, and chickens and cows in Europe, PETA’s staff says the last thing we need to do is add yet another poor animal to the list of those being frightened and slaughtered for a taste.”

I know, I know, an animal is an animal, and Petans are loons.

  1. Thinker says:

Petans are loons…Not much debate there.

  2. The Monster's Lawyer says:

    ymmmm. cat 🙂

  3. jgalea says:

Well we all know what PETA stands for don’t we … People Eating Tasty Animals 🙂

  4. Floyd says:

I’d probably have personal issues with eating cats since I’m a cat owner. I think I’d also have issues eating any other carnivore just because they supposedly don’t taste very good to humans.

On PETA: beef, chicken, fish and pork are tasty. Slurp.

  5. Panarra says:

    Yo quiero Gato bell!

  6. mthrnite says:

    My cat is fat
    So now I’ll dine
    And eat all up
    This cat of mine

  7. Miguel says:

The improved sexual potency will do them little good once the rats take over…

  8. Paddy-O says:

Why doesn’t PETA go and harass the Inuits for eating mostly meat and try to convert them to veganism?

    That’d be fun to watch!

  9. Calin says:

You know, where I grew up there was a resteraunt named “Taco Casa”. We didn’t think much of it, until a friend of mine pointed out that spelled backwards it was: “A Sac O’ Cat”.

  10. admfubar says:

geeeee no one said anything obvious about eating “cat”??? wow what is this blog coming to!!!? 😛

  11. Jopa says:

What’s wrong with a festival that celebrates eating *pussy*cats?! 😉

  12. Dave W says:

#10…cat yummy, pussy not so much. :).

While I love and adore cats, I can’t understand the “I’m a cat owner so I find this disgusting” attitude. Do cow or pig owners have the same problem?

If you are going to eat flesh, get used to the idea that it used to be a living being. Otherwise go vegetarian.

As for me, I’m having spam, spam, spam, spam, baked beans and spam!

  13. McCullough says:

    12. “As for me, I’m having spam, spam, spam, spam, baked beans and spam!”

You should supplement that with a little meat.

  14. Cursor_ says:

    I have eaten cat.

    Mine was tough and stringy.

Have also ate snake, rat, grubs, worms, snails and other assorted meat type items.

As I am an omnivore, I don’t fear meat.

  15. The Monster's Lawyer says:

Mom used to make a great casserole. Ahh…good times….good times.

  16. Angel H. Wong says:

The only place where they eat more pussy is the Lillith fair.

  17. brm says:

How in the hell is eating because it’s believed to cure impotence even on the same planet as eating something because it sustains life.

PETA’s mission must obviously not be converting people into vegans.

  18. Slatts says:

“If God didn’t want us to eat animals, why did he make them out of meat?”
    John Cleese

What’s the difference morally between eating a pig and eating a cat?

But seriously folks and cat lovers (I have two), in the coming apocalypse if it was a case of eating your cat or starving what would you do?

  19. McCullough says:

    #18. Meow Mix

  20. Pfkad says:

And next year they can eat all the rats that have bred like, well, rats, because there weren’t enough cats to keep them in check.

  21. Lou says:

    Kitty on a bun.

  22. Gasbag says:

As Roger Moore said,”Nothing wrong with a little pussy”

  23. deowll says:

Not eating enough meat causes your brain to shrink.

  24. jbellies says:

#7 #21 — as noted in the article, the cats are bred specially for this feast, so no effect on the rat-catching population.

Incidentally, guinea pig is also considered a delicacy in Peru, so you can have it both ways.

Personally, I’m mostly a vegetarian, but don’t object to anybody else eating meat (be it mammal, reptile, fish or insect) unless we’re talking about endangered species: certain whales, dodos (gone), auks (gone) ….

Cats, guinea pigs, and, yes, seals, are not endangered. Has anybody researched if Mountain Pine Beetle tastes good?

  25. Bonehead says:

    uuummm,, cats !!!

I like ’em sliced real thin and saute`d with onions. Top with some portabella ‘shrooms.
