A dozen Mormon missionaries are again taking off their trademark white shirts for a calendar that seeks to strip away stereotypes about their church.

The 2009 version of the Men on Mission calendar was released Thursday – two months after its creator was excommunicated by leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for producing this year’s calendar…

Calendar producer, Hardy was excommunicated July 13 by a panel of church leaders for conduct unbecoming a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Calendar model Cody Bloomfield, who graces the 2009 cover, said he’s not worried about disciplinary action. He said shining a light on the church’s younger members is good.

Dedication to public good is always praiseworthy. Too bad those “supervising” the good works can’t seem to stay out of the way.

  1. god says:

Tee hee. Which one is the “real” James Hill?

  2. Mit says:

    Just to be clear.

As a practicing Norman with two anglo saxon wives, I take no missionary position on this issue.

  3. Buckwheat says:

I’ll get one when they get around to doing a female version of the calender…

  4. James Hill says:

#1 – LOL! I’m not LDS, and have never been on a mission, so I didn’t quite cut it for the calendar.

  5. Dave W says:

Former Mormons make some of the most decadent fags I’ve ever met. And I’ve met a lot of decadent fags in my day :).

  6. Greg Allen says:

I don’t know much about Mormon missionaries but I’ve met lots of missionaries — both Protestant and Catholic.

Not all are neo-Puritan evangelicals. Most, I would guess, aren’t even evangelizing — they are doing relief work, development projects, teaching and — GASP! — community organizing.

And, relevant to this post, they aren’t prudish about the human body.

Have you seen “Big Love” on HBO about Utah “Mormon-style” polygamy?

One of the characters is a closeted, self loathing gay guy.

The series isn’t a cheap shot at Momonism — it is a pretty interesting look polygamists while keeping a pretty interesting plot line.

  8. James Hill says:

#7 – From my observations, it’s pretty accurate on the whole.

  9. OvenMaster says:

I claim sex discrimination. Where are the topless Mormon women?

  10. Ethan says:

I am a Mormon, and went on a Mission. Got home 3 years ago.

The Church excommunicated this particular member because he’s making money off being LDS and attaching the Churches name to sell shirtless calendars.

I guess making money on a calendar was more important than membership in the church he served a two year mission for. His loss, I suppose.

I have alomost no connection to Mormonism so I can’t judge but “Big Love” seems authentic, they way they play it.

With, of course, plot lines that are not meant to be totally believable.

  12. tkapp says:

Just to clarify, “Big Love” portrays a small sect of the FLDS Church that continues to practice polygamy today. It does not portray the LDS church, generally referred to as the Mormons, who do not practice polygamy. These are two different churches with very different sets of beliefs.

  13. quackn says:

Hi Ethan. The Mormon church makes money in various businesses, such as the King Ranch in Florida. The Mormon church also rakes in big bucks through tithing. The Mormons are into the “freedom for me but not thee” thing big time.
