McCain is Surrounded by Idiots
by John C. Dvorak

Last night I witnessed one of the biggest screw-ups I have ever seen in a Presidential campaign in my entire life. And this may cost me a lot of bets and it may cost john McCain the election. The culprits, though, are the apparent dummies handling the McCain schedule and strategy. These people should all be fired tomorrow. They are out-and-out idiots and I actually wonder who they really work for.

McCain was scheduled to do the David Letterman show. He’s a perfect match for Letterman and it would have been funny and endearing. But golly there is this economic situation that needed attention so McCain had to rush back to Washington. He even called Dave on the phone to cancel at the last minute.

Letterman was dubious and booked Obama-nut Keith Olberman as the substitute guest. It seems as if McCain was not heading to Washington after all but over to another studio where Katie Couric would bring him on the news hour. In fact they showed McCain getting powder in the set before the interview. Couric and Letterman are in-studio around the same time.

They put the feed of this right on Letterman’s show. He was steamed.

I have watched Letterman since the days when he was trying to do a daytime TV show and witnessed his show catching on fire. I saw him in the late late show when they would do the whole show as a cartoon or over-dub a Mexican’s voice. I know and love this show. One thing is consistent over the years. Letterman is extremely vindictive. He will go on bitching for weeks when someone does not show up or cancels at the last minute. They are never invited back. Anyone on the staff associated with the fiasco is in the doghouse for months.

So McCain does the news with Couric and lies to Letterman about having to go to the airport. Wonderful. Does McCain have anyone in his organization that knows anything about this sort of thing? Do they like the idea of relentless pounding with one-liners and harsh jokes day after day after day until November. They just invited such a barrage and they are going to have to live with the possibility that one of these nightly jokes will stick in the American public’s psyche and kill the election for McCain.

Why? Why did they allow this possibility to happen? I’ll tell you why. Because there are incompetents running the campaign. McCain has been plagued by this since the inception of the campaign.

Yeah, I know that I have a lot of wagers and my personal reputation riding on this election with my predictions from over two years ago saying that no Democrat would win this Presidential election in 2008. Yeah, I know and that’s why this sort of outlandish screw-up happening irks me to no end.

So what was the point of screwing over Letterman?
It was obviously something cavalier within the management of this campaign. Some shit-head who did not know what he/she was doing but managed to lord it over the rest of the group.

The over management crises is also apparent with Sarah Palin and her obvious repeating of talking points without explanation. She did it with both Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric. With Gibson he reworded the exact same question about Israel bombing Iran where she repeated the “I don’t think we should second-guess Israel.” She repeated her response word for word each time Gibson rephrased. She should have called out Gibson and said, “Charlie you are simply asking me the same question over and over and I’ve told you once already what I think. Why do you insist that I repeat myself?” But no, she acted like a robot instead, apparently afraid of someone behind the curtain. Afraid of some “expert” who knows better.

She was also stiff and unnatural with Couric. Palin is an obvious victim of over-coaching by someone in the campaign responsible for presentation, talking points and all the on-message baloney that takes the humanity out of the candidates.

Years ago, I remember seeing Democrat Walter Mondale on the Johnny Carson show after his defeat in the 1984 elections. The guy was incredibly funny, sharp and easily kept pace with Carson in a lively and amusing conversation. I wondered where was THIS guy during the election. He could have won. Instead the public got served an Al Gore-like stiff, obviously over-coached to not make mistakes. In football they call it “playing not to lose.” It usually results in a loss and it did for Mondale.

My advice to McCain and Palin: Get rid of this person who is screwing you over if you want to win this thing. They should be easy to find if you actually look.

Adding insult to injury, Letterman brought on MSNBC host and left-wing attack dog Keith Olbermann as the substitute guest for McCain.

During his chat with Olbermann, Letterman used the in-house CBS cameras and monitors to show McCain being readied for his interview with Couric on the set of the CBS Evening News.

“He doesn’t seem to be racing to the airport, does he?” Letterman said referring to McCain’s call earlier in the day when he told Letterman he was canceling because “the economy is cratering” and he has to rush back to Washington to work on a Wall Street bailout plan.

“Hey John, I got a question You need a ride to the airport?” Letterman yelled at the TV monitor as the in-house camera showed McCain talking to Couric.

The audience howled in delight at the merciless edge of Letterman’s anti-McCain barbs. The comedian also repeatedly asked why McCain didn’t send Palin in his place — suggesting the GOP handlers were afraid that she couldn’t handle it.

That’s what Bill O’Reilly does! He even brought on Joe Lieberman and tld him ‘you’d be vice president right now if Al Gore had come on my show’

  2. James Hill says:

Excellent column, JCD. While I’m on the other end of the who’s-election-this-is-to-lose argument, I agree that the positioning of the last two days by McCain’s camp has been poor… to say the least.

I see the McCain handlers looking at the recent economic news as an armageddon-level even, where as Obama is taking the “SSDD” approach. Since most Americans can only do the same as what Obama is doing, his approach will be viewed as the more reasoned one.

Obama lost the momentum in this cycle with the Palin announcement, but he’s about to get it back due to McCain’s bumbling. This could very well be the point where the election makes its final turn into a Obama victory.

Palin is a victim?? Come OFF it John. She has been in hiding, she has been cut more slack than any candidate I can recall.

If any of us would have done what McCain did to Letterman we would be called liars.

  5. McCullough says:

All of this is very entertaining, to say the least. The Greatest Show on Earth. PT Barnum would be proud.

  6. #5 seems good for the blog at least! 🙂

  7. Noam Sane says:

This is the first time you’ve noticed McCain acting erratically? You’re not paying attention.

You think Letterman is gonna kill the campaign, but not the hopelessly-in-over-her-head Palin? Not the never-ending lies the have flowed from the campaign like water over a dam? Not Rick Davis’s lobbying for Fannie Mae (also a subject of repeated lying over the past few days)?

Olberman is an Obama-nut? Maybe, since he HAS been paying attention – it’s his job – he recognizes how dangerous a McCain presidency would be for this country?

  8. Noam Sane says:

…adding, you do understand why they bailed on Letterman and rushed to Couric: Palin had a disastrous performance in an earlier interview with Couric (hard-hitting journalist that she is) and it needed to be bumped from the lead on the evening news.

Wake up and smell the horseshit.

  9. Eric says:

Wow, John. Breathe, breathe, take it easy, there you go. 🙂

Yeah, there is definitely something hinky with the McCain campaign. Alternating brilliant and bone-headed, its always interesting

  10. Eric says:

BTW, John, can you give us a run down on all the bets you are about to lose? Just interested….. 🙂

  11. Jimmy James says:

It seems like the republicans realize the enormity of the situation, and how disasterously it will all fall apart next year, so they are trying to lose.

They don’t want to be the ones that couldn’t fix it, so they will let Obama be left holding the bag.

    McCain is trying to lose.

  12. chuck says:

Wow, he had a choice between Letterman and Couric, and he (or his advisors) decided to do Couric?

Yes, he is definitely surrounded by idiots.

On Letterman, McCain could have sat down, done a few lame jokes, let Letterman make fun of him, and it would have been a nice show.

On Couric (which I haven’t seen) it wouldn’t matter how well he does – someone will re-edit it to make him look stupid, and there’ll be loads of out-of-context quotes thrown all over the place.

BTW, did anyone watch The Daily Show last night? John Stewart did about 2-3 minutes from the start of the show with jokes about McCain, then Palin, then Biden. But no Obama jokes. Nothing.

Is it because Stewart is such a big Obama fan that he wouldn’t dream of making a joke about him? Or is Obama just not funny?

  15. Higghawker says:

Letterman is watching McCain thru live feed while he is getting his nose powdered. Remember he told Dave he was rushing back to Washington. So Dave while they are watching the feed says, “Hey John, you need a ride to the airport?” I must say, that was one of the funniest things I’ve seen in awhile! Olberman was even slumping in his chair!

Both of these candidates are a joke and we deserve what we get!

  16. Jim in Seattle says:

Please. There is the largest financial crisis in the history of the WORLD and McCain elects to skip hee-hawing with Letterman and be serious with Couric on CBS News. What is so “screwed up” about that? McCain knew he had to be in an environment that wasn’t going to make light of the situation like Letterman would be. He needed to get some face time for the American people, even though CBS News is the lowest rated, it’s a NEWS program and citizens need to hear his views on this situation.

So what he stiffed Letterman? He’s a comedian! So WHAT? Olbermann is a sportscaster. A SPORTSCASTER. If they want to yuk it up by watching McCann get prepped for his news appearance, they’re being petty and pretty oblivious to the reality of the world.

  17. grog says:

#16 dude, by mccain’s own words, his number one priority was to get back to washington,

but by his own actions he did an interview

who’s more oblivious to the reality of the world? mccain? or you?

  18. grog says:

    #16

i thought i’d save you the time figuring out the answer to my question here is a hint:

because mccain sits on exactly ZERO of the senate committees that are actually working on this, his presence in washington would be pointless

    just sayin’

The only thing a Prevent Defense ever prevented was a victory.

What part of this does McCain not understand any longer. It makes one question everything about this man. He’s got no credibility left. Zero. It’s sad. Poor John.

  21. Noam Sane says:

    But no Obama jokes. Nothing.

That could be because McCain is ridiculous and Obama, not so much.

  22. mike_elgan says:

The most important job of the president is to pick the best people to run the government (and sit on the Supreme Court).

The quality of two of our three branches of government depend entirely on the ability of the president to choose the right people.

McCain has demonstrated incompetence, both in campaign staff and V.P. choice.

It’s not the fault of idiots that they’re idiots. It’s the fault of McCain for choosing idiots.

    Mike

  23. J says:

I think it makes sense why they did it. John McCain on the evening news talking about all he wants to do about the economic crisis. It makes him look more presidential instead of joking it up with Dave.

    BUT

The problem I have is John McCain Picked up the phone and lied directly to David Letterman. That was the mistake not the canceling. If he had told Dave the truth I am more than certain he would have understood and joked about it in the opening monologue but would have dropped it.

The problem is that John McCain is a LIAR and it is oozing out of every orifice in the campaign.

Like I said right after John McCain pick Sarah Palin. The Democrats are going to win by a large margin or landslide. People are fed up with the lies.

  24. #22 I’m not totally buying the fact that he is in total control. Like all these elections there are party handlers always involved and you listen to them or lose the support of the party itself.

  26. Scott says:

    @21

I think that’s exactly it. I think comedians bring to light the jokes that many people are thinking (but afraid to point out) — and try to not to offend to much doing so.

Its been a while now, but I remember hearing a series of stories about the lack of things to ‘make fun of’ when it comes to Obama. Where as there’s been plenty of things to laugh (sadly) about from Bush’s actions. McCain’s age, Palin’s sudden appearance from *nowhere* — more to take shots at.

“Ridiculous” is probably a little unfair, but, I agree its still there.

  27. Adamesq says:

Almost a good article. You’re making a great argument that could have been expressed without the need of falling into the name-calling pit. I don’t think “Obama-nut” is on the this week’s talking-points bulletin, but it’s been there before.

Your opinion of Keith and the Palin info are irrelevant red-herrings. They’re purely divisive detractions. This article did not need to delve into political rhetoric.

You’re trying to cover too much ground. The article you’re using to draw attention to Dvorak.org falls apart because your whole point is muddied with its own muckraking. In more 70s terms, you’ve sunk your own battleship.

  28. stopher2475 says:

So John is shilling for the neocons to win a bet?

  29. Scott says:

Another point that I forgot to mention that is being over looked a little bit with the posts thus far here is that, when I watched the video clip, it wasn’t necessarily that Dave was pissed that John dissed him. It was more so that they didn’t have someone else show up in his place (which should have been possible) — which is a fair complaint. If they’ve got a free spot on a national media outlet, to choose *not* to send someone (regardless of what campaign we’re talking about) seems like a mistake to me. Seems even sillier given that neither McCain nor Obama have any real influence (in the bills developed) outside of voting (as I understand it).

  30. Noam Sane says:

Like all these elections there are party handlers always involved and you listen to them or lose the support of the party itself.

    But…but…he’s a maverick!
