The 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team has spent 35 of the last 60 months in Iraq patrolling in full battle rattle, helping restore essential services and escorting supply convoys.

Now they’re training for the same mission — with a twist — at home.

Beginning Oct. 1 for 12 months, the 1st BCT will be under the day-to-day control of U.S. Army North, the Army service component of Northern Command, as an on-call federal response force for natural or manmade emergencies and disasters, including terrorist attacks.

This new mission marks the first time an active unit has been given a dedicated assignment to NorthCom, a joint command established in 2002 to provide command and control for federal homeland defense efforts and coordinate defense support of civil authorities.

You’ll love the quote from the brigade commander:

“It makes me feel good as an American to know that my country has dedicated a force to come in and help the people at home.”

Thanks, Marc

  1. Hmmm. I thought that the Posse Comitatus Act prohibited the Army from acting as domestic police. Or was this revoked, along with most of the rest of the Consti-“Goddamned Piece of Paper”-tution by Dumbya and his “Patriot” Act?

  2. Paddy-O says:

#1 No, they are going to be election monitors! LOL!

  3. McCullough says:

Come on guys, we will need them to keep order when the economy tanks.

This could get real ugly, real fast.

  4. Improbus says:

I just don’t have the words to express my outrage about this. Why do we need ACTIVE DUTY army units in the US of A? Is it because the National Guard isn’t at home where they should be?

  5. Paddy-O says:

#4 “Why do we need ACTIVE DUTY army units in the US of A?”

There have been active duty army units in the US for decades…

  6. lynn says:

Possibly will need armed forces to control the masses if the current administration refuses to leave in January.

  7. Lou says:

Wecome to the police state.Brought to you by the Neocons.

  8. Sparky says:

Maybe we are reading this on a blog because it isn’t newsworthy? There are military bases around the nation full of active duty troops. I think it started in like 1776 . . .

  9. Improbus says:

    @Plenty-O-Stupid

The difference is that they were on bases and not DEPLOYED. We don’t need a bunch of machine gun toting Army soldiers deployed around defenseless civilians. It is a recipe for disaster.

  10. Breetai says:

Ya know, I’d bet 1 to 1 that the goons complaining about this “Active Response Team” as gestapo are the same ones who where crying and whining about Bush not doing enough during Katrina.

    Beware the monkey’s paw.

  11. McCullough says:

#10. Yes how and why they are used for or against the citizens is the key. Taking guns away from law abiding Katrina victims should give clue to the clueless.

  12. Motaman says:

Who else would run Adam’s FEMA camps?

  13. Mr. Fusion says:

    #1, MM,

Federal troops or Federalized troops have been used several times in recent years against civilians. Most notable were the Federal troops and federalized militia in Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee during the civil rights problems, and during the 1992 Los Angeles riots.

Before that they were used by Hoover to disperse WWI vets from Washington DC in 1931. That was one of the acts that sealed Roosevelt’s victory.

  14. JimD says:

Bush/Cheney COUP D’ETAT IN THE MAKING !!! Bush ALWAYS WANTED TO BE “DICTATOR” – “If this were a dictatorship, it would be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I’m the dictator,” Bush joked.” – This from the man who thinks the “Constitution is just a God-damned piece of paper” !!!

  15. The Monster's Lawyer says:

Gearing up for GW’s inexplicable 3rd term.

  16. amodedoma says:

Sounds like the plot to an appocalyptic B movie. The government knows of some pending doom that they try to keep from the public while they make ‘preparations’. First there’s huge economic turmoil from the resources being dedicated to this secret project. Then they bring home the troops to beef up homeland security, and then, boom it hits and troop’s are there to protect the priveleged from the riff raff as the chaos from the disaster causes society to break down into absolute anarchy.

Gee, I sure hope it’s just a paranoid fantasy.

  17. What is this about says:

The Posse Comitatus Act still applies. It just means that U.S. troops can’t take on policing duties in the United States (like they are in Iraq). There are a few exceptions: “Troops used under the order of the President of the United States pursuant to the Insurrection Act, as was the case during the 1992 Los Angeles Riots.”

So in ‘special cases’ they can be called up. But soldiers can NOT just generally patrol the streets of Chicago, usurping the authority of the local Chicago police, country deputies, or state police. The act was the prevent us from having a regular “national” police force. Using them in specific emergencies/temporary cases, was always allowed, but rarely used.

  18. Carcarius says:

Would our troops really turn on us if ordered? Yeah, it’s their job right?

Is the USA devolving into a despotic nation? The last 8 years sure seemed to look like the Bush Administration could do just about anything and get away with it, just like a despot.

The Bailout will be no exception (most likely).

  19. #13 – Fissile One

    >>Federal troops or Federalized troops have been used
    >>several times in recent years against civilians

Yeah, but it’s still against the law, isn’t it?

    >>That was one of the acts that sealed
    >>Roosevelt’s victory.

I can only hope we’re so lucky on November 4th.

  20. Paddy-O says:

#20 “Yeah, but it’s still against the law, isn’t it?”

    Nope.

  21. riker17 says:

Alex Jones has been talking about this for awhile and this should be all over CNN. Read: http://www.infowars.com/?p=4803

  22. MikeR says:

You’re all a bunch of paranoids. Obviously NorthCom is to be used to invade Canada. “Thar be oil!”

  23. Paddy-O says:

#22 “Obviously NorthCom is to be used to invade Canada.”

Thanks a lot MikeR! We were going to smuggle them up there as hockey player trainees. Now you’ve tipped them off to NorthCom’s plans!

    Traitor.

  24. Calin says:

Maybe this is in preparation for the “election” in November. I’ve seen more than one opinion story from so-called reputable news sources that stated that if Obama loses there will be race riots in the streets.

  25. Sparky says:

LBJ sent troops into Detroit in 1967, (even tanks!) during the 12th St. riots.

  26. Cursor_ says:

    This is step one.

History is again repeating itself… how long before we go to Lexingtom again?

#24 “I’ve seen more than one opinion story from so-called reputable news sources that stated that if Obama loses there will be race riots in the streets.”

Obama is going to win. No worries there.

#26 “History is again repeating itself …”

Good thing libs have worked for the last 40 years to ensure that only the gov’t is armed. LOL!

  28. Cursor_ says:

    #27

Everyone is pretty much armed here. Much more so than europe.

There are plenty of weapons to go around and lots of fertiliser for bombs.

  29. Balbas says:

I always wondered why they didn’t send MP’s to patrol Baghdad. Now I know: We already have police, but they’re just oo damned inadequate to handle the job.

  30. James Hill says:

A story like this shows why liberals are not part of the mainstream, as they were the same group asking where federal support was after Katrina.

This the federal support you’re going to get until the National Guard and the Army are divided apart. Until then…
