In what is slowly turning into a endless loop of hacktivism activities, Bill O’Reilly’s BillOreilly.com has been compromised during the weekend, with personal details including passwords in plain text for 205 of the site’s members already leaking across Internet forums, as a response to his remarks regarding Wikileaks as a “one of those despicable, slimy, scummy websites” which recently published private information of Sarah Palin’s private email.
“Fox News demagogue, Bill O’Reilly, has been hacked and the details passed to Wikileaks. Wikileaks has been informed the hack was a response to the pundit’s scurrilous attacks over the Sarah Palin’s email story–including on Wikileaks and other members of the press, Hacktivists, thumbing their noses at the pundit, took control of O’Reilly’s main site, BillOReilly.com. According to our source, the security protecting O’Reilly’s site and subscribers was “non-existent”.
Moreover, it’s also worth pointing out that the passwords were stored unencrypted, evidence of the practice can also be seen within the screenshots of the admin panel. As far as the website’s administrative URL is concerned, it has since been changed once it leaked online which isn’t excluding the opportunity for abuse of the subscribers email addresses in spear phishing attacks, “for starters” since some of the users have already admitted of using the same password at different web sites, including PayPal.
Don’t these people ever learn? A guy who has made as many enemies as O’Reily should know better.

I got this letter one day when I was younger and it was addressing things about me that I could change. It was deeper than just treat people nice. The only problem is that it wasn’t signed so I had no way of knowing the perspective of the writer. I never figured out who it was. It was useless, I threw it away. Just like this post that we’re all commenting on. It’s useless.

Expecting O’Reilly’s website to have good security, is like expecting an unsanitary landfill site to be as secure as Fort Knox. Hacking it, only gave O’Reilly’s site some measure of legitimacy it never had. Now he can claim he was violated, and personally attacked. Owwwww. Bill spews nothing but hate/anger/bigotry. The people I hear yelling the loudest are always the “happy conservatives”. Try to have a religious discussion with one and you will soon be covered in spit as they get more and more angry.

I certainly wouldn’t lose sleep over Bill O’Reilly’s troubles and I found the fact that his site was that poorly maintained relatively amusing. This does not excuse what these people did, though.
It’s REALLY important to make sure you maintain the same set of standards for the people you hate as you do for those you love. Also, I’m certain that not everyone who signed up on BillOReilly.com was a right wing nutjob. (Not to imply that all right wingers are nutjobs, but Bill certainly is.)
All in all, this story disappoints me. The Sarah Palin thing uncovered the fact she was receiving government email in her personal yahoo account. There are several problems with this and so while I don’t think hacking her account was the right thing to do I think that people DO deserve to know that she does business this way. I’d say the same thing if it happened to Obama. I certainly wouldn’t rail against the websites who posted the information.
The family pictures were beyond the pale since there really was no news value to them at all. I would have preferred those pictures not be posted and would not have posted them myself. I suppose they validate that it is Sarah Palin’s email, but that would be better done in other ways…
