Review: The 60th Emmy Telecast – From Inside the Box – Zap2it
Hey, I was watching reruns of Canadian TV comedy while the Emmy’s were on. In fact, I forgot they were even on and missed them. (Great marketing). This was apparently a good thing, for me. One pundit after another has bashed the living crap out of this year’s awards. Gee, if show biz people cannot even put on a show, no wonder the Internet is killing TV.

Sunday Sept. 21 night’s 60th Annual Emmy Awards concluded two minutes early and I’m fairly certain that all 40 people with the patience to stick around to the end were mighty grateful.

Pundits had already been bemoaning the show’s inevitable low ratings for weeks, complaining that mainstream viewers with no awareness of Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Damages or even 30 Rock wouldn’t bother tuning in to see them honored. So producers responded by giving those few dedicated viewers one of the sloppiest award shows in recent memory.

All awards shows are complete crap. Who wants to see a bunch of self-absorbed butt-wads stroking their own egos?

Put all this junk on a separate network so that only the minority who give a hoot can pay to see it.

  2. bobbo says:

People watch tv to be entertained or informed. This type of long running ad/self promotion does neither. It is however one step above most interviews of politicians.

  3. >>mainstream viewers with no awareness of Mad
    >>Men, Breaking Bad, Damages or even 30 Rock..

Shit, I have no awareness of any of those shows. The only one I’m marginally aware of is 30 Rock, and only because of the hubub over the Tina Fey/ Sarah Palin SNL skit.

Never seen any of them, and I sure wouldn’t watch a show to see them get awards.

    Pfffft.

“All awards shows are complete crap. Who wants to see a bunch of self-absorbed butt-wads stroking their own egos?”

About 50% of my job involves award shows. All I can say is the above phrase is about the purest distillation of the stinking mound which is the contemporary awards show. Not even “show business people” can save that which should not be allowed to live.

  5. Paul Kenjora says:

    John,

You’re a tough man to reach. I’d like to speak with you regarding a review of Arkayne.com. Its tech, its blog related, and I’d love it if you tried it and told us what you think.

Email me, I’ll send detailed brief.

    – Paul

  6. chuck says:

A show that involves Ryan Seacrest is, by definition, pure crap.

  7. J says:

They predicted that this show would suck weeks before it aired. There seemed even back then to be a severe lack of interest even back then.

  8. Bill says:

The ‘Red Carpet’ was fun, I especially liked Tom Smothers, I bet they squirmed in the control room.

To many ‘hosts’ it reminded me of those shows where everyone talks at the same time.

  9. rectagon says:

Canadian TV? WOO HOO. What show were you watching John?

  10. MikeN says:

Maybe if they would give out awards to shows people actually watch?

  11. James Hill says:

I was too busy watching the crap that was the Packers play calling (on both sides of the ball) against the Cowboys.

  12. Paddy-O says:

“Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Damages or even 30 Rock”

Never heard of these shows. Most of what is on TV is pure crap.

  13. Uncle Dave says:

I ‘watched’ the whole thing as I was working on a project. To say the opening sucked is actually a complement since I assume that was the intention. No one could have thought it was going to be good. It must have been satire. Right? It had to be. Right?

    Mustard:
Mad Men, Breaking Bad and Damages have been some of the best shows on TV for a long time. That they are on basic cable is even more amazing. Vastly superior to the major network offerings, with the possible exception of Pushing Daisies.

  14. Uncle Dave says:

#13: The first two are on AMC and Damages is on FX.

  15. Ron Larson says:

Hollywood award shows and “Top ‘n’ lists” in magazines are self-serving BS that are sold to the highest bidder. If you believe that any of the “winners” were decided by nothing but talent and skill, then I have a bridge to sell you.

  16. Mongo says:

Breaking Bad is outstanding. Mad Men, too.

What they need to do is just have a show for innovative quality shows and just forget the rest.

The networks, and even to some extent, HBO, have made the decision that they can cut funding of cutting edge new shows to the bone and the drones will keep watching whatever they fill the time slots with.

They’re wrong. I’m gonna cancel HBO.

“Big Brother” and “America’s Greatest Dog?” How much brain damage do you have to have to even consider watching crap like that.

  17. jccalhoun says:

When I flipped through the television guide and saw that it was being “hosted” by a bunch of reality television hosts I knew it would be crap and didn’t bother watching it.

  18. Esteban says:

I never watch award shows, and from the sound of it, I probably never will.

  19. Paddy-O says:

“The first two are on AMC and Damages is on FX.”

    Thanks Uncle Dave.

  20. Greg Allen says:

The snubbed “The Wire” which some critics say is the best TV series… EVER.

To mean — and many — the Emmy’s have no credibility.

It reminds me of the days when the Grammys would give multiple awards to Alvin and the Chipmunks but totally snub the Rolling Stones.

These days, though, the Grammy’s get most stuff right. Hopefully, the Emmy’s can do that to.

  21. j blue says:

Awards show? It took the me until the first political dig to turn me off…Howie Mandell you shock me..and so does the rest of the cast, crew, winners of the shoddy award show! I give it a -10… yep crap!
