I live in a blue state portion of the rust belt, and one thing I hear from middle-aged white voters, even from life-long Democrats, is that they will not vote for Obama for one simple reason: “Black politicians are corrupt and cannot be trusted.” I just want to make this clear, these are middle and upper middle class liberal whites, people who know what they’re saying is wrong and are embarrassed to say it. But they’ll believe and say it, nonetheless.

In whispered voices they’ll cite to Young, Kilpatrick, and Barry as evidence of this alleged inherent corruption. When I point out the unfairness of lumping all black people together, they’ll say something along the lines of, “Well, we just can’t take that sort of chance with the presidency.” As if the presidency is somehow the last hope and holdout for white America. And of course it ignores all of the corrupt and/or convicted white politicians, troopergate (Clinton, Spitzer, and Palin), Ted Stevens, Larry Craig, the entire history of Chicago, to name just a few.

Not surprisingly the press isn’t covering this view of Obama by older voters, but in my experience from my state, it’s widespread. So my question is, when white America goes to vote, and they’re all alone in their booths, voting their deepest and darkest beliefs, does Obama really stand a chance?

You want to talk about racist. Just look at the GOP convention footage.
Did anybody even see a Black man or woman??
It is probably why people will be more apt to vote for a woman though then a man.

#72 “Yeah, like all of those miserable people in countries like Denmark,Sweden,Finland and Norway that are always at the top of the list of countries with the highest standard of living and countries with the happiest people.”

Then why does almost every person I know from those countries eventually ask me what’s the best/fastest way to move to the U.S. so they can make more money?

You should ask them, but my guess is that they’re right-wingers, just like you? I.e. they hate paying for good roads, a good health care system, subsidized daycare, free education (yes, studying at University is free of charge… you pay for your living and the books… that’s it.) etc. That’s just too communist.

“Blacks vote based on race 98% of the time…”

This is exactly the logic I’m talking about. If a black person votes for a black candidate, you assume he cast his vote based on race instead of the merits of the candidates. Where’s the evidence?

Selvy, you prove my point exactly. You have no evidence to suggest that black politicians are more corrupt, per capita, than whites. So how have you come to your conclusion? I’ll tell you: Because when a black politician commits a crime, you take that black person as a representative of “the black race.” But when a white politician commits a crime, you do *not* take that white person to be a representative of “the white race”.

For you, a corrupt black politician is a sign of “black corruption” — whereas a corrupt white politician is merely a corrupt individual. You don’t think in terms of race in the second case.

    Do you understand this..?

  6. Paddy-O says:

    #74 “You should ask them,”

I have. They want to be able to prosper to the degree that they are able and not be punished for being smart & productive.

In other words… they don’t want to pay for the welfare system. 😉

If that’s the way you interpret Scandinavia then by all means get your passport and move their immediately.

You’ll love the part where the government takes most of your paycheck – for the common good. In a short while your incentive to work will be gone and you’ll be just another nonproducing slave dependent on government.

    Great career move – ay?

What part of “Happiest people and Highest standard of living” don’t you Understand?

… as opposed to the United States, where there is zero unhappiness about the conservative government!

So again it must be asked: What part of “Happiest people and Highest standard of living” (in Scandinavia) don’t you understand?

    I sense another non-response coming…

#49, I think it’s likely in this case. He was elected at the same time that Derrick Bell was complaining about not enough blacks on the faculty.

  13. MikeN says:

    oops wrong thread

  14. MikeN says:

I don’t think middle America wants to vote for politicians who delay the return of American troops for their own political benefit.

Weren’t liberals insisting this was treason when George Bush and Reagan were accused of delaying the release of hostages before the 1980 election?

I assume you’ll use the same standard here with Obama, for which there is far more evidence?

  15. Paddy-O says:

In other words, they want to succeed or fail by their own merit. Pro choice in their own life.

    No, it is Marxist.

    Tee hee! Haw. HAW!!!

You seem to be laboring under the misconception that any nation that isn’t suffering under the jackbooted reign of Dumbya is some kind of commie backwater.

Why do all those other countries do so much better than us, I wonder?

  19. Paddy-O says:

#92 “Why do all those other countries do so much better than us, I wonder?”

You mean like Gross Dom Product per capita?

Hmm, of those countries listed only Norway is higher (low pop & large oil production).

    Or, maybe inventions…. No.

    Or, maybe power… No.

    Or maybe personal freedoms…. No.

Maybe rate of welfare received… Yes!

  20. Jägermeister says:

Did you know that it’s run by a right-wing coalition?

Right wing by euro standards. LOL!
