The NY Times has put together a blistering look at how Sarah Palin ran her city and state. You need to read the whole thing to appreciate how, despite her doing some good things (and there were some), what this says about the Republican party if she was the best McCain could find.

Once Elected, Palin Hired Friends and Lashed Foes

Ms. Palin walks the national stage as a small-town foe of “good old boy” politics and a champion of ethics reform. The charismatic 44-year-old governor draws enthusiastic audiences and high approval ratings. And as the Republican vice-presidential nominee, she points to her management experience while deriding her Democratic rivals, Senators Barack Obama and Joseph R. Biden Jr., as speechmakers who never have run anything.

But an examination of her swift rise and record as mayor of Wasilla and then governor finds that her visceral style and penchant for attacking critics — she sometimes calls local opponents “haters” — contrasts with her carefully crafted public image.

Throughout her political career, she has pursued vendettas, fired officials who crossed her and sometimes blurred the line between government and personal grievance, according to a review of public records and interviews with 60 Republican and Democratic legislators and local officials.

Change, my ass!

  1. Right says:

Failin’ Palin has some answering to do. Or does she? I’d bet a million dollars Hannity will be so tough on her she’ll end up crying.

  2. Argggh, Unc. I don’t get no respect! I linked to this article in post #159 of http://www.dvorak.org/blog/?p=24216 .

I’m sure none of the right-wingnuts read it, but I would have expected you to!

  3. Ah_Yea says:

She is starting to sound more like Hillary every time you turn around.

Well, that is, a Hillary you can actually STARE at!

  4. Uncle Dave says:

Mister M, sorry, but I gave up reading all the comments somewhere around 70, and by then I was just skimming. Too much to read, too little time.

  5. God says:

    Ah_yea:
After I made Hillary, I realized there were a few, er…quite a few, errors. Sarah is my new and improved model. Besides, I’m not making democrats any more. The whiny little pukes don’t even talk to me anymore.

  6. #4 – Unc.

No problem. Let me just reiterate what I iterated the last time around in the previous blog post, as I think it still applies:

Oh, groovy. We’ve just been through 8 miserable years of an administration that put a premium on loyalty and secrecy, and now the Repugs are offering up McBush and his chromosomally challenged evil twin?

  7. dmccall says:

This drum beat is driving me to unsubscribe to this blog…and vote FOR McCain. Keep it up and we’ll have 4 more years of Republicans in the Executive Branch.

  8. hhopper says:

So, the more bad things you hear about Palin, the more you want to vote for her.

Sure, that makes a lot of sense…      not.

  9. Matt Garrett says:

OH BOY! ANOTHER HIT PIECE FROM THE LEFT!

The Gray Old Lady has become a cheap two dollar hooker for agenda driven journalism. The only thing missing is “I’m Barak Obama and I approved this message!”

You guys do know that Obama is running against McCain, don’t you?

  10. Greg Samsa says:

Hmmm…the New York Times publishes a hit piece on a conservative. Of course, it MUST be true! No one who dishes on a public figure EVER has an ulterior motive, right? And journalists NEVER get things wrong.

  11. eddie says:

Uncle dave You may think you are being informative in this article. but in truth you make her sound like a pol. No more no less. And to parrot another writer you and your ilk are driving a number of fence sitters to MCcain. “O” and before you call me stupid that is a garanteed vote for McCain. Once again is that your wish?

  12. Nimby says:

The description could very closely match that of every woman I have ever dated and definitely both of the ones I married. And aren’t these pretty much what we heard about Hillary for the last couple of decades?

Dave, I don’t know who’s responsible for the “Palination” logo but shame for using it. There are plenty of reasons to attack Palin but that image of her holding the rifle whilst wearing bikini is NOT one of them. Please don’t use manufactured evidence in your assaults. It took me about three minutes on Google images to find the photo that was pasted onto that body.

Will this be the “Photoshop Election”?

  13. bobbo says:

My goodness, whats with you republickhams? You all are posting as if you KNOW the truth, there is only one truth, and any other view is propagranda from the left.

How do you “know” anything? When did you know it? What was your source?

Seems to me you have to read all sources: left, right, and middle then compare that to your own life experiences, maybe a history book or two, and make the best guess you can? That was a GUESS because how anyone will perform in office is mostly a guess, not a certainty.

If your view of Palin is that she must be a good person and qualified to be President of the USA because she was picked by McCain====oh, nevermind!

  14. Glenn E. says:

I think the real reason McCain picked her, is for the public to have someone else to demand impeachment of, than him. When things start to go wrong (oh and they will), she’ll be the GOP’s scapegoat (with lipstick). This is all assuming that they win in November, which I doubt.

If they really wanted to win, why didn’t they pick a black VP candidate. Instead they went with a faux Hillary. Assuming that they could pick up the disappointed feminist vote. Though the GOP has never courted them before. Rush Limbaugh popularized the use of the term feminazi, applying it to most feminist organizations he rants about.

The GOP also like Palin as a symbol of the religious right (or at least moral right). Because McCain just doesn’t cut it, I guess. But some of the things she says, like Iraq being “God’s War”, tends to scare just about anyone. And recently, when asked about this, she claimed she was sending her son into this war. That’s how much she claimed to support it. Well I just read something about “Track” avoiding jail time by enlisting in the Army. So was this an arrangement between the Army and mommy Palin? And once the election is over, will they get him a safe job at the Mexican border, too? Your tax dollars at work, proving political favors for the rich, and well connected.

  15. Paddy-O says:

Here’s an excellent article from one of CA’s smartest pol’s (he’s a Dem).

  16. bobbo says:

#17–Paddy==that was an “OK” article. It makes a core mistake in acting as if it was Palin who would be elected on day one? I’m kinda hoping that McCain really is a hypocritical politcal whore selling out to the rightwing religious base. That way, he can return to his maverick roots of 8 years ago when he takes office. He does appear to be overly enfluenced by the Karl Rove sleaze machine though==and that includes the class warfare as well as the election campaign lies and manipulations.

If Palin does become President, I wonder how much of the office will be “her” verses the machine that got her there?

  17. Paddy-O says:

#18 “If Palin does become President, I wonder how much of the office will be “her” verses the machine that got her there?”

About the same as any other Pres, except for Kennedy, and we know what happened to him…

  18. Lou says:

    Another bible thumping nut job.
That worked out well for the past 7 1/2 years.
    Lets do it again.

  19. brian t says:

I was going to say “wait for the comments dismissing the NYT as a ‘Liberal Mouthpiece Propaganda'”, but I see I’ve been beaten to the punch. Do these people know anything about US history? “Liberal” should not be an insult.

  20. Paddy-O says:

#21 ““Liberal” should not be an insult.”

It shouldn’t be but, the type of people who have co-opted the term have made it so.

  21. Uncle Dave says:

#9: McCain is running for Prez, but given his age, there is a very good probability that Palin will end up there, too. That’s why there is so much concern over her qualifications and abilities.

#12: Explain exactly how pointing out the things she has done (and btw, if you read the article, Dems AND Repubs were sources for it) and how unqualified for office she is makes you WANT to elect her and McCain. Ignoring qualifications and abilities is what got us Bush.

#13: I made the banner. Yes, that image is fake, but so, apparently, are some of the things she and McCain have said about her record and activities. THAT’S why I used it.

  22. badtimes says:

Good for her! Openess and accountability are poisoning our democracy. We need more leaders that are willing to say “You don’t need to know. Just pipe down.”
And cronyism? Who knows your peeps better? Beats a resume any day of the week.

  23. QB says:

    #23 Uncle Dave

If you use a life mortality table, McCain would have 30% chance of dying during his first term based on his age. Factor in the cancer and 5 years imprisonment and torture, you can make it between 50% and 70%.

  24. Improbus says:

Don’t forget that if McCain dies that this woman will be nominating Supreme Court justices. The thought sends a chill down my spine.

  25. Jägermeister says:

#24 – badtimes – And cronyism? Who knows your peeps better? Beats a resume any day of the week.

Yeah, ask any dictator. Nepotism usually works too.

  26. Buzz says:

What’s the difference between a hockey mom and vice president of the United States?

    Nothing!

  27. MikeN says:

What’s it been 3 weeks since she’s been announced as the VP, and the media unleashes these in-depth investigations? So why haven’t they done this on Obama for the last two years? The New York Times news pages haven’t even reported his pastor’s statements about ‘goddamn America’

  28. MikeN says:

    Charlie Gibson’s interviews

    Obama interview:

How does it feel to break a glass ceiling?
How does it feel to “win”?
How does your family feel about your “winning” breaking a glass ceiling?
    Who will be your VP?
Should you choose Hillary Clinton as VP?
    Will you accept public finance?
What issues is your campaign about?
    Will you visit Iraq?
Will you debate McCain at a town hall?
What did you think of your competitor’s [Clinton] speech?

    Palin interview:

Do you have enough qualifications for the job you’re seeking? Specifically have you visited foreign countries and met foreign leaders?
Aren’t you conceited to be seeking this high level job?
    Questions about foreign policy
    -territorial integrity of Georgia
-allowing Georgia and Ukraine to be members of NATO
    -NATO treaty
    -Iranian nuclear threat
-what to do if Israel attacks Iran
    -Al Qaeda motivations
    -the Bush Doctrine
    -attacking terrorists harbored by Pakistan
Is America fighting a holy war? [misquoted Palin]
