Click here to read the speech.

A lot of fear and safety and military references throughout beyond his own POW experiences. A lot of we have to do this and we have to do that, but no specifics. He did at least repudiate Bush & Co.’s incompetence. Sort of. I did have to laugh at his talk about kicking out the lobbyists and special interests while (as ABC showed clearly in their nightly newscast piece) those very people put on the biggest parties and were given choice seats at the convention. Just coincidence that Jack Abramhoff was sentenced earlier in the day.

In short, the message seemed to be, Here’s a nice man who went through hell just so he can now get tough and use his experience to protect us from the evil Democrats while working to change everything his party has screwed up while it was in power.

Oh, and I was impressed with the chanting of “USA” when protesters (what the hell was that woman in the pink nightie around the 8 minute mark about?) interrupted. How did they ever spontaneously think of doing that?

So, what did you think? Did you like it? Fall asleep? Do you believe McCain will do what he said in last night’s speech?

Sound off!

  3. MikeN says:

Bobbo, it’s been awhile since I looked at the methodology, but I just remember being surprised at how much weight they put on equality of care. If you argue for government health care based on rankings from a study that rates whether you have government health care, then that’s circular.

  4. bobbo says:

#66–Mike==thats a bit tricky. I doubt any study ranks whether or not healthcare is provided by the government. BUT where governments do provide a baseline service THEN people do have greater access to healthcare and better results. Do you think that there are any for-profit systems that provide more healthcare than “to everyone?”

So, I think your error is unintentional==but you have been duped by your label hanging friends.

  5. Mark Ashton says:

The speech was pretty boring overall, moving at a couple of moments but mostly I walked away thinking…wait a sec? He says he wants change…but he/his party have been in charge for the last 8 years? Ok, fine then. I want change too…away from McCain. The most amazing thing of all was that when he talked about economic policies he listed all the usual republican policies…which is largely what got us into the position we are now. What a hoot!

If those charts are accurate and I don’t think they are. The only people that John McCain will help will be people like me. If that is the case how can anyone other than people like me make a case that John McCain’s tax plan is better for America. Are you trying to say that the top 2% are responsible for all the growth in the American economy? LOL you people must have your heads up your ass if you vote against your own interest because of some American warrior ego or some religious belief.

Most Republicans make poor business men because they can’t see past short term gain and that leads to eventual failure. Let’s not confuse illegal activity with good business skill either.

  7. bobbo says:

Lets say that McCain’s speech and his candidacy was actually “wonderful.”

How fair/effective/necessary is it to PUNISH the republican party for failing under Bush?

All politicians lie most of the time and they are all self seeking power hogs. We cannot predict future performance, SO it seems to me the “most valid” way to vote is based on the parties performance in office? I’m not being partisan. Pretty much what I’m saying is that “based on performance” all incumbents would be voted out fairly consistently.

How did Bush get in twice? He didn’t even say he was going to change as does McCain.

I asked this once before with no responses: HEY you twice voting Bushies, what makes him look so good to you?

  8. The Monster's Lawyer says:

#70 Bo – I have the same question every time I see one of those ‘W’ stickers or Bush ’04 campaign bumper stickers on a car. Makes me want to ask the driver what the f@ck they were thinking the second time around.

  9. bobbo says:

#71–SL==well, in truth, I think we know “most” of the answer, and it is just so foreign to us that we keep forgetting. Its what makes up the Republican base, its what makes up the 30% approval rating of Bush, its what brought the crowd to their feet at the repuglican convention: Right to Life, pro gun, anti-gay. If you are hot on any of those issues, you are Repuglican and will vote repuglican until you can no longer have a job or gas to put in your car. THEN it will be your fault for not working harder.

I still chuckle when a lady complained to Bushieboy that she was having to work 3 jobs to make ends meet and he complimented her for working so hard. Its the fair market system after all.

  14. Jack Bauer says:

I thought the speech was great. Not his best but still respectable. I prefer McCain’s speech to Obama’s platitudes. All Obama does is to mindlessly repeat “hope” and “change” without any specifics. It’s kind of embarrassing.

I’m an independent and don’t really care too much for either party, but I’m choosing to go with McCain this time around based on his record. Obama should go back to the senate and try again in 10-15 years when he has actually accomplished something.

We’ve already had a president who learned on the job and it was a disaster. I don’t want another one.

  15. BigCarbonFoot says:

#61 – You got that right. Hell, Ted Kennedy is an actual, honest to God, murderer and he;s still in office.

#75 – Obama was trying to project that he was sent to us by the Gods to save us. More likely he’s Nicolae Carpathia or a Manchurian Candidate. Who’s really running him? George Soros? Obama himself is obviously nothing more than a puppet front man.

  16. QB says:

I’m looking forward to the debates. This is patently scripted for TV.

I would never vote for McCain (and I couldn’t anyway) but he really sucks in speeches. I personally think he isn’t that bad of a guy.

“More people watched McCain than Obama!!!”

Wow you really don’t care about facts do you. Nielson doesn’t normally weight PBS in the accounting because PBS doesn’t have regular commercial breaks. When you add PBS into the mix Obama had more viewers. Not to mention 10 times more people in the audience.

If you know how Nielsen does it’s counting you would know that your statement is stupid to begin with but not everyone knows about their different methods. I happen to because it is part of my business and I pay to get reports from them.

    Obama 41.9 million
    McCain 41.6 million

That is 300,000 more for Obama. Next time before you try to distort the facts You should understand the facts you are trying to distort so you don’t look like a fool when doing so. There are many reports from Neilson they are designed for different demographics and some reports leave out things like PBS and C-SPAN because they aren’t relevant to the report. Of course for you Republicans the one that leaves out PBS is the one you need to help spread your lies.

“Russia’s leaders, rich with oil wealth and corrupt with power, have rejected democratic ideals and the obligations of a responsible power. They invaded a small, democratic neighbor to gain more control over the world’s oil supply, intimidate other neighbors, and further their ambitions of reassembling the Russian empire,” sayeth McCain.

    WRONG!

Georgia invaded Russia! Say it with me, Mr. McCain. Georgia invaded Russia!

Open up a dead-tree newspaper, sir!

Good God, he can’t even get something recent and childishly simple like who invaded who, and he wants to have his finger on the U.S.’s nuke button? Not bloody likely!

  23. Jopa says:

As a non-American that watched both Obama and McCain speak, I find McCain to be a better, more real leader then Obama.

I think Obama is cool, but not much more.
McCain on the other side is a very experienced man and I like the fact that he has scars of war on him. It should insure that he would not rush into a war when one is not needed. I also like Palin 🙂
She is a pitbull mom hehehehee. No really, she is a tough mom – this is a good thing. Some of he practices of tough motherhood are applicable on every level (state level too).

I think these two are very good and though they might not be as cool as Obama I believe they will do a better service (in most issues) to the US then Obama.

    This is my humble opinion.
Anyway, whoever wins, I hope they will help to improve the US. A strong US = strong democracies around the globe.

    P.S
And to the dudes that laugh at McCain movements saying he is like a robot – lets see how you move when you will be 72 years old and after years in captivity with broken arms and legs…

The more interesting thing is how many watched McCain in the first place, especially as McCain was on less channels than Obama and going up against the NFL season opener. There’s a message in that.

  26. J says:

    # 89 BigCarbonFoot

“McCain was on less channels than Obama and going up against the NFL season opener. ”

McCain had just as much coverage as Obama. If you have proof from a reliable source otherwise please post it. Stop getting your facts from Right wing pundits.

As far as the NFL……..The game ended before John McCain spoke. So, if anything he had a leader from the game to help in the numbers. That is why networks put new shows after already popular shows, because it leads to more viewers by default. If anything his numbers are INFLATED because of the NFL game.

  27. bobbo says:

It would “make sense” to me that more channels would carry Obama because the democratic base is more diverse, therefore more groups are interested in Obama, therefore more stations/groups would provide coverage.

I think an Obama rep said more black owned stations covered Obama rather than McCain.
