Brothers admit stealing parts from 244 corpses

Two brothers who ran a funeral home and crematorium admitted Tuesday that they sold corpses to a company that trafficked stolen body parts, a macabre scheme that left families aghast and unclear about the fate of their loved ones.

Louis and Gerald Garzone pleaded guilty to charges including conspiracy, theft, abuse of corpse and welfare fraud.

The gruesome allegations read in court drew gasps, murmurs and tears from about two dozen people who had entrusted the bodies of their loved ones to the Garzones’ facilities in Philadelphia.

The brothers allowed at least 244 corpses to be carved up without families’ permission and without medical tests, prosecutors said. Skin, bones, tendons and other parts — some of them diseased — were then sold around the country for dental implants, knee and hip replacements, and other procedures.

Some bodies were only torsos by the time the hacking was done, said Assistant District Attorney Evangelia Manos.

The tissue plundered from a single body often fetched about $4,000, and Mastromarino made millions from the scheme, prosecutors said.

“But they weren’t using the parts anymore…”

  3. Ron Larson says:

Well Jeeze. Like anything else, why don’t they just legalize this and tax it? Did any of the families know they could sell their kin’s parts? Funeral directors could become sales reps for harvesting companies. For poor families, it might even pay for the funeral.

  6. Mr. Fusion says:

    Jokes aside,

These parts were not checked for disease or condition. They may have had AIDs, Hepatitis, Lupus, or Halitosis. If you paid tens of thousands dollars for reconstructive surgery only to find out later that the donor passed along an incurable disease is unconscionable.

Larry Niven called it years ago.

  8. Dee says:

First of all the parts can not be transplanted because they are already “dead” too long…but if it helps medicine and science why not do that? It’s just dead meat, right? I was thinking about selling my body to the man who did “Bodyworlds”…I have seen those “bodies”…great, looked like beef jerky in some spots. But still if that helps medicine students… Maybe one day you will see me sitting across the guy at the chess game…lol… I don’ty care. My spirit will be somewhere else having fun…enjoying death…
Having said this…let me get another beer…ciao folks

  9. Lou says:

If I needed a part. I could be in.

  10. Lets Part Them Out Too says:

Let’s wait until they get to prison, then part them out as well. We could offer a carton of smokes for one of their noses or ears. Every couple of months buy a part and stretch it out over their sentences. Fingers, toes, they could last quite a while.
