With Barack Obama (or throughout the DNC) you never once saw an over the shoulder shot of the speaker showing the telepromoters. But with Sarah Palin, it’s almost like a called shot. “Shoot the prompter. Shoot Palin. Shoot the audience. Back to the prompter on two.” I do not know who ran the video pool, but two things were apparent. They were going to make this teleprompter an issue. It began in advance with warnings from Katie Couric that Palin’s speech would be “totally scripted.”
See Couric’s blog here. This as if to say nobody else’s speeches were scripted. The idea here is to indicate that Palin was somehow more of a scripted stooge than everyone else. Exactly which team of video producers did the Republican feed, it wasn’t very good. There was no HD feed on the Dish Network while there was an HD feed for the Democrats, for example. And this tagging of the prompter seemed totally chickenshit, for want of a better word.
Then today CBS brings up the latest rumor about how Palin may have had an affair with her husband’s partner. None of the other networks or any other major news source ran this item. Rarely does the MSM quote from the Enquirer and tend to bury the story unless it is forced on them. Obviously CBS is in the Obama camp and it’s pretty obvious.
McCain Camp Knocks Down Enquirer’s Palin Rumor – From The Road
John McCain’s campaign threatened legal action against the National Enquirer today for running a story about McCain’s running mate, Sarah Palin, allegedly having an affair with her husband’s business partner.
Even if your theory the CBS is in the tank for Obama is true, so what? So now Fox has some “fair and balanced” competition. Big deal.
John, this is why I did not tune in last night. I’m treating this like CES. Sometimes it is more edifying to watch the meta-coverage than the raw event.
JCD
CBS is not the only one that shot the prompter CNN MSNBC and FOX all shot it too. It was a common feed.
“Then today CBS brings up the latest rumor about how Palin may have had an affair with her husband’s partner. ”
I told you this woman has a virtual graveyard in her closet. The affair one is not even the best one. There are still about 5 more that are yet to be released. Don’t you worry the rest of the news outlets will be on that story soon. This woman is not who she pretends to be and the general Republicans are soon going to relize it just like the Wall Street ones do now.
Just wait. She is toast.
“This is turning out to be one of the most brilliant political moves of all time.”
This woman is eye-candy! Her *ONLY* purpose is to distract everyone from how fucking *OLD* McCain is and his stance on the issues that face the American public!
In that regard, yes, it’s a brilliant political move. However, it only plays well with the undereducated conservatives as the new polls from MN, IA, and OH have shown.
All of this attention will doom the Republicans. Once the fanfare is over, and the dust settles, you’re still left with an angry nutty old guy and his white trash running mate.
The issue is that the speech doesn’t say anything about her ideas or experience. It was written beforehand for whoever got the VP nod.
Obama is very involved with the speech writing process and they reflect his views. I don’t know about McCain, but it sounds like he could use a few writers.
Basically the speech shows that Palin is a good speaker. Whoop-de-do, I read off some good speeches in high school.
The rebublicans control their convention. They can decide where to put the cameras (As the democrats did).
Probably CBS punishing the campaign for pulling the Larry King interview… Oh wait that was CNN. Watch for the McCain camp punish CBS for this.
Maybe its not wise to boo the media thats covering your convention. Just a thought.
I think J’s spot on – the woman is not who she pretends to be; and without medication McCain can’t remember who he is…
Mr. Hill, anybody who isn’t pissed off by 9/11, Iraq’s WMDs, Tora Bora, Abu Graib, Abu Gonzalez, Scooter Libby, Harriet Miers, Katrina, North Korea’s nukes, Medicare “reform”, and the state of the American economy* (that’s the short list) is either a potted plant or one of the GOP’s useful idiots (look in the mirror to check). I’d suggest you go back and get your G.E.D., just as a start.
*The number of U.S. workers filing new claims for jobless benefits jumped by 15,000 last week.
Something just occurred to me. I don’t remember the Republicans being all that dismissive of the National Enquirer when they broke the story on John Edwards. That turned out to be 100% true. I remember the Republicans saying “How come the rest of the media ignored it” THAT IS A GREAT QUESTION!!!!!! He is a dirt bag and he got caught!
Let me tell you something about the National Enquirer. They are not respected but they have a team of attorneys that rival Microsoft’s or any large powerhouse you can think of. While most of their stories are silly they are very carful to not cross the line.
They have been the source on many breaking stories over the years. It is just that no one wants to admit to it.
FAST!!
The GOP needs to bring forward the Clinton murders of 27 people!! Every bit counts now and the gloves are off!
Let start here. FOX – where are you?
http://www.stewwebb.com/Hillary_Clinton_Murders_March_27_2007.htm
You are absolutely correct in most of your accusations. I do not think all acts were deliberate, but I do believe there is a motivation in some media circles to torpedo this woman’s campaign.
However, I support them in their efforts. I do not support lying about a candidate or misrepresenting their positions, but frankly, if it is in the public domain or at a public appearance, it’s fair game.
Yes, showing the teleprompter is misleading. However, that is mild beer. Camera angle, lighting, and many other aspects of the presentation are always being maniupulated to deliver a view biased to the intents of the presenters. I consider this small-time stuff in the context of a political campaign.
As for liberal bias in the media, there are very few outlets that are truly liberal. But IMNSHO, there are more news outlets that are biased towards neocon and right-wing issues than left.
There are probably quite a few journalists who do not support Palin, but then again, I agree with John Stewart that truth has a liberal bias.
John – the decision not to offer the RNC in HD was Dish’s.
It was available in HD on DirecTV and OTA from your local stations.
Well, according to reports, her telepromter BROKE halfway during the speech.
http://www.redstate.com/diaries/redstate/2008/sep/04/breaking-sarah-palin-winged-her-speech-bec/
As far as the “eye candy” remark goes, that is so absolutely dumb and sexist that I can’t believe I am actually recognizing it. Still, GROW UP!!
I have been hearing reports this morning, saying that the teleprompter didn’t stop for the applause, and by half way through was to far ahead to be useful. Can anyone confirm this?
By the way, before you decide that the nets are in the tank for Democrats, be aware that ABC and CBS aired NO analysis from Dems during Day 2 of RNC coverage, despite airing analysis by Republicans during Day 2 of DNC coverage.

16,
Like I give a fuck what you think.
Funny how a 44 year old person with ‘no experience doing anything’ scares the shit out of the demoes. Also funny is that she out Obama’ed Obama. She should be the main candidate, and will be in 4 years or so.
Step aside wanna-be-Queen-Hillary, game over. To bad you were not smart enough to see past your own penis.
I flipped through Fox, NBC and CNN for postgame, and I found it all that all three of them took time to note that she didn’t write the speech, but gave it very, very well.
I’m sure she didn’t write the speech, but probably collaborated with a speech writer to create it. I’m sure Obama has that same kind of oversight from party leaders for his speech points.

“Like I give a fuck what you think.”
Come on your better than that. BUT Im not
Like he gives a fuck what you think!!!

> I agree with John Stewart
> that truth has a liberal bias
As a joke, that is quite funny due to its absurdity. He is a comedian after all. Truth has no bias. I would bet that if CBS found something big against Obama that they would bury it.
The DNC convention was definitely more “slick” than the RNC convention is showing to be.
#26
I’d bet that has been true for over 50 years. It doesn’t really speak to conservatism to out slick your opponent.
#24 – #16 isn’t likely to give a think. That’s not the role of a troll.
But, you already knew that.
Oooh, so much anger!!
Let your hate drive your arguments. Then your journey to the dark side will be complete!!
BTW, does anyone remember anything she said? Or were the Democrats too busy writhing in anger to pay attention? And the Republicans too outraged by the Democrats to care what she said?
No wonder this election is still split 50/50. Come November, it’ll be the lawyers who decide it — again.
For the party of family values to have Gulianni introduce Palin – I mean, come on, Gulianni’s own kids didn’t support him after he brought his girlfriend to live with them in the mayor’s mansion. As I said in a previous post, there is plenty of hypocrisy to go around, Dem, Rep, Liberal or Right, you and me too. Sigh.
Halfway through Sarah Palin’s speech, people following the speech noticed she was deviating from the prepared text.
According to sources close to the McCain campaign, the teleprompter continued scrolling during applause breaks. As a result, half way through the speech, the speech had scrolled significantly from where Governor Palin was in the speech. The malfunction also occurred during Rudy Giuliani’s speech, explaining his significant deviations from his speech.
Unfazed, Governor Palin continued, from memory, to deliver her speech without the teleprompter.
Contrast this to Barack Obama who, when last his teleprompter malfunctioned, was left stuttering before a crowd unable to advance his speech until the problem was resolved.
#10 Noam,Let’s break it down, 9/11 was being planned for years right under the nose of Clinton and all the idiots he appointed. Clinton created the N. Korean nuke problem when he gave N. korea an $8 billion loan for “infrastructure”(we now know where that money went). and as far as abu graib, i don’t give a rat’s a#@ about terrorists being picked on in prison. oh yeah and Katrina, that was a hurricane, i blame mother nature for that one.
Yeah, lets. 9/11 happened on Bush’s watch, despite plenty of warning including the Aug 8th briefing (“Bin Laden determined to strike US).
Clinton put a lid on the North Korean nuke problem with the Agreed Framework, which was trashed by Bush, then resurrected by Bush when cowboy diplomacy failed. In the meantime they nuked up.
Abu Graib – you know for a fact all of those prisoners were terrorists? No, you don’t, and they weren’t. But that’s not the point – it was a public relations disaster (and security disaster) for the US and we will be paying for it for years.
It wasn’t the hurricane, it was the response, or rather, the lack of it. Of course, as with Abu Graib, those who suffered had brown skin, so fuck ’em, right?
Another useful idiot for the GOP.
# 31 jbenson2
Oh bullshit!
#32 –
If you may recall, the Clinton administration briefed the Bush administration with a report titled “Bin Ladin Determined to Strike in US”. And after 9/11 Bush said, “I don’t think anybody predicted 9/11”.
The Abu Graib scandal wasn’t about arresting people who MAY have been terrorists, it was about the US torturing those people in violation of international law and at to the detriment of the reputation of the US.
And finally, if you don’t know why people are pissed at Bush with respect to Katrina, then you’ve been living on the sea floor for the past year at least.
