The 100 ugliest cars: 20-1 – Telegraph — This is a British list that is quite interesting. We need to do one here on DU.
This car came in number 2. On that I can agree.
This car came in number 2. On that I can agree.
Bad Behavior has blocked 4807 access attempts in the last 7 days.
Rented a Fiat Multipla in Italy, an excellent drive, turns on a dime, reliable, took five adults and their luggage with ease and with the multijet diesel it cost nothing to run. A fine car with a bad image. It’s been face-lifted to make it look more normal, but it’s lost it’s character.
I would definitely agree with the AMC Pacer and the Gremlin. Wow, they had a crappy design bureau at that company. I grew up during the 60’s and 70’s and AMC put out some horrible-looking cars. I would also agree that the Aztek was unbelievably ugly.
I find it very difficult to understand how the Subaru Legacy (of which I’m a proud owner!) managed to avoid this list!
What? No Datsun 710?
Honda Element on that list. I own that vehicle.. WHile not good looking by any stretch it isn’t that bad. Bahh what do the Brits know about cars anway..
The current Chrysler 300 is by far the ugliest vehicle on the planet.
The Nitro and Crossfire contend for third ugliest.
The other uglies are ‘cute’ by comparison.
1972 Karmann Ghia here… Yeah baby!
I can’t believe the Citroen 2CV was not in the bottom 20.
I always kind of liked the Gremlin. The Pacer on the other hand…yeach!
And the PT Cruiser is not so bad. Certainly better looking than the current versions of the Honda Civic and Toyota Camry.
Regarding the Edsel, I do question what is unprintable about “looks like an Oldsmobile sucking on a lemon”, as that was the most famous comparison.
C’mon… some are really really ugly (the pontiac, sure, the AMCs and the Austins…) some others have the “mistique” aura and can’t really be classified as ugly (Triumph tr7, and the 2CV up above.).
Curious that the SUV class, here represented by the best models (Rover, Porsche, Audi, Hummer) are dissed as ugly. I never liked SUVs, but this seems like a personal crusade…
My mom loves to tell the story how a neighbor explained “the real reason” the Edsel failed: seems the v-shaped radiator seen in a rear-view mirror reminded too many men that their wives were chasing after them.
I don’t like their list, though putting Aztek #1 makes sense. The PT Cruiser would make the best looking cars list, and they have it #10. The Cayenne doesn’t belong either.
They should make room for all the electric and hybrid cars for which being ugly is a necessary quality(excl Tesla).
Where is the Chevrolet Corvair? How can they include the Jaguar XK-S (#43), Chrysler 300C (#55), or BMW 7-series (#98) but ignore the Corvair.
One word:
Prius
There are some damn ugly cars on that list, but there are some that look too “normal” to be considered ugly.
That said, I’m glad the Pontiac Asstek took the top spot
Maybe they should hire Steve Jobs, he’s quite good at selling sexy junk.
I don’t believe that the Hummer or the Nissan Micra are ugly.
This article is interesting to me not for the list, but for being another example of the surging interest in Britain over cars.
Top Gear is one of the most popular shows in the country, and an American version is coming soon (without Leno unfortunately, which is a shame). It seems to be at the forefront of this renewed interest.
My question is if the interest is coming from an excess of wealth, or a rejection of smaller-better-cheaper as a sign of being a good human being.

The Aztek was insanely ugly. No argument there.
Not much argument with the rest of the list except:
20. I like the Range Rover (I’d never own one, though.) The rich Arabs drive black ones, with dark tinted windows, and it’s a darn stylish way to drive in the desert in contrast to a Hummer.
10. The PT Cruiser is OK, too. I’d rented one, once, and liked it enough to actually consider it, if I ever needed a station wagon.
12. It’s no great beauty but the Ford Ka has a certain kind of urban, almost Italian, style to it. I could picture owning one for inner-city driving.
MISSING on the list is the “Ford Avalanche”
Man, that sucker is ugly.
I would add:
Toyota Prius
Toyota Scion
Although, the Aztec would top my list as well.
I never really knew what it was like to have one’s mind boggled until I saw my first Citroen 2CV. It was at that moment that I realized neither I nor Americans in general would ever (EVER) understand the French.
If someone in my family had come up with something like that, we would have had to 1: lock it (and them) in the secret room in the basement and 2: Never Speak Of It (or Them) Again.
A very entertaining piece. I hesitate to admit that, yeah, I kind-of liked the Pacer. When I hit the Lottery, I’m going to get one and have some body work done on it to make it look even MORE like a flying saucer!
#26
And still the 2CV is the same thing as the Ford T.
It was a deliberate search for the essential automobile: cheap, economical, simple mechanics, flexible yet robust.
It was (like German’s VW) to give the car to the people in pre war (193o’s) France.
The only design goal they imposed on it was “to be able to carry a basket of eggs through a plowed field without breaking any.”
An engineering masterpiece…
Should look for similar attempts at the essential:
Morris mini
Renault 4L
Fiat panda
VW beetle
Willy’s jeep (yes…)
Also, it was the 2CV success that inspired one of the best automobile ever made:
the Citroen DS.

The yellow one looks like a metallic catfish sans barbs!
The 1959 Nash Rambler gets my vote.
Another
beautyexample is the 1957 DeSoto.#20, Shubee,
The Hummer is ugly.
Where did they come up with this stuff? They have beautiful cars stashed in between hideous cars.. This is more like “the only 100 cars we could think of list”.
The Range Rover is a hell of a lot nicer looking than the butt ugly german competition…ugly ass merfeces “m” or ugly ass bowel movement on wheels “x”.
