Associated Press – August 19, 2008:
Michigan authorities say a shoplifting suspect died after being crushed in a trash compactor where she was hiding.
The Eaton County sheriff’s department said two women fled a Lansing-area TJ Maxx discount store after spraying a security guard with Mace. A deputy found one of the women behind a trash compactor.
Shortly afterward, authorities got a call about a woman trapped in the trash compactor. Tyree Monique Tate of Delta Township was pulled from the machine by rescuers and taken to a hospital, where the 26-year-old later died.
Now, she definitely deserved the Darwin Award banner.
Posthumous recipient for sure.

If some of us sound a bit callous, I am sorry. For many people it is a very harsh world out there.
It is my sincere hope that Tyree’s senseless death may help others see that you live (and sometimes die) with the decisions you make.

The point here is that by her own stupidity, she became the author of her own misfortune. There is an often repeated joke about:

If we don’t heap shame upon stupid people they won’t have any incentive to learn. We are doing them a favor. Plus, it’s funny.

The rules state that to be eligible, you can no longer contribute to the gene pool, not that you have to be dead. Dead entries are the most common, but there are some living ones who cannot procreate anymore.
