A death row inmate scheduled for execution says he’s too fat to be put to death, claiming executioners would have trouble finding his veins and that his weight could diminish the effectiveness of one of the lethal injection drugs.
Lawyers for Richard Cooey argue in a federal lawsuit that Cooey — 5-feet-7 and 267 pounds — had poor veins when he faced execution five years ago and the problem has been worsened by weight gain.
Cooey is sentenced to die for raping and murdering two young women in 1986. His execution is scheduled for October 14.
Dr. Mark Heath, a physician hired by Cooey’s Public Defender, says Cooey’s weight, combined with a potential drug resistance, increases the risk he would not be properly anesthetized.

Chain him to a treadmill! Is he going to refuse to go to the hospital when he has his inevitable fatman M.I., since they would HAVE to start an I.V.? I.V.s can be put into a central vein in the neck or subclavian. That’s what happens to many morbidly obese people in the hospital. I’m sure Joe Lawyer would claim that’s a horrible cruelty. Funny how the concept of cruelty never crosses these sub-human beings’ ‘minds’ while they are torturing and killing their victims.
The notion that he couldn’t receive enough anesthetic is ridiculous. They could drip a gallon of it into his IV. Any anesthesiologist could figure the dose out in 3 seconds and then quadruple it for good measure. I do believe that anesthesiologists won’t get involved in death penalty issues for ethical reasons however. Either that or skip the death trip and give him some hard labor for the next 30 years along with a 1200 calorie A.D.A diet

I think it’d be a good opportunity to investigate molecular disruption technology. From lumpy scumbag to a pile of dust in a 2 seconds or less. If that’s too high-tech, maybe just an incredibly intense incinerator. There’s all sorts of possibilities.
The technology could then be leveraged into making Suicide Booths – the first of which will be installed in our nation’s prisons.

“I prefer lifetime imprisonment without chance of parole for folks convicted of first-degree murder. It’s less expensive (appeals in a capital murder case average in the millions of dollars), it’s reversible in the case of a wrongful conviction (and haven’t we had a lot of those), it solves the problem of uneven application (there aren’t any rich folks on death row), and it is a long-term punishment for the guilty, instead of a simple, painless end to their life. As an aside, it’s amazing how many of you people who have posted comments in favor of a bullet to the head, a firing squad, starvation, and so on as being a more appropriate method of carrying out this douche-bag’s sentence–it’s amazing how many of you have an absolute, all-encompassing ignorance of our nation’s constitution, combined with the surprising inability to spell simple words correctly or even to write in complete sentences. Nitrogen asphyxiation is better than pushing IV’s. You get high, maybe have a headache and loose consciousness. All you need is a bottle of nitrogen, regulator and mask. It also removes the medical crap that disturbs some. Proponents of the death penalty fear constitutional entanglements. Not that they have to worry about with this Court. Regardless of the fine public education handed out in civics classes, revenge goes hand in hand with justice. That’s obvious with the replies on this board alone.

It might be a hard stick for an lesser trained doctor. The wife says that any anesthesiologist, phlebotomy tech, and pretty much anyone in trauma. The law is probably so stupid that it requires a doctor when in this case a nurse or tech would be best.

It is not a case of cruel and unusual anymore. It is a case of convenient and painless. No one said the deaths were supposed to be painless (at least not until the special interests made themselves known.)
