I’ve been riding a Segway for a couple of years now, but I don’t feel I’ve lost enough of my dignity. Is there anything that can make me look like even more of a nerd?

I get this question a lot from Segway riders. If you want to truly get in touch with your inner nincompoop, help is on the way.

Toyota has unveiled the Winglet, sure to be a ridicule-magnet. It has a top speed of 3.7 miles an hour – faster than walking but not fast enough to get away from a jeering mob with torches and pitchforks.

Toyota didn’t say when it will start selling the Winglet, or how much it will cost. A company executive said, “We first have to gauge the reaction of the people.”

I didn’t think Toyota would ever build something this silly again since they stopped making 3-speed automatic transmissions.

  1. Jägermeister says:

The average American would probably crush it.

  2. Improbus says:

I didn’t think anyone could out dork the Segway. I stand corrected.

  3. riker17 says:

Is walking becoming too passe? Do we really need a device to replace our feet? I am thinking that Wall-E is not far from the eventual truth.

  4. Jägermeister says:

    #3 – riker17 – Is walking becoming too passe?

    For some

  5. QB says:

#2 Yes, it truly is the Dorkmeister 3000.

  6. Dallas says:

I’m waiting for the new American version where you lie down and comes with a flat panel TV.

  7. chuck says:

Combine the Winglet with that exercise pill http://www.dvorak.org/blog/?p=19456 and I can compete in the Olympics. (I won’t win, but at least I won’t have to make any effort.)

    What’s next – the hover-couches from Wall-E ?

  8. Omar says:

This thing actually looks like it would be a lot of fun, if the top speed was 20 or 30 mph instead of 3.7.

  9. Paddy-O says:

“faster than walking but not fast enough to get away from a jeering mob with torches and pitchforks.”

I missed this line 1st time I read the entry. Almost spit out my beer. Good imagery.

  10. hhopper says:

#8 – I agree. If it went faster, it might be fun but 3.7 mph just doesn’t cut it.

The guy who wrote the original article was damn cool.

  11. admfubar says:

next the hover boards from back to the future……..

    soooooooooooo
how do you go up stairs with these things??
    and really… i t is just an electric rollerskate………

  12. deowll says:

The average American needs to walk more and ride less. If you are in some manner disabled these things can compute.

  13. QB says:

Will “>Woz play polo on it?

No, this isn’t dorky. Not at all…

  14. QB says:

Will Woz play polo on it?

No, this isn’t dorky. Not at all…

    Mistype, sorry.

  15. the answer says:

Leave it up to Toyota to make something more flimsy then it should ever be.

  16. Ron Larson says:

I’m waiting for the new American version where you lie down and comes with a flat panel TV.

Just like the ones on Wall-E? Don’t forget the Big Gulp cup holders.

  17. Rick Cain says:

Its not truly dorky unless it has robotic legs.
