Bosnian woman praying at Potocari Memorial Center

Radovan Karadzic, a former Bosnian Serb president, is blamed for these and other deaths during a genocidal war that claimed about 100,000 lives. He was captured yesterday in Belgrade, where the so-called “Butcher of Bosnia” had been living under an assumed name and practicing alternative medicine…

The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia welcomed his arrest. “This arrest may be considered another milestone in the development of international law and further fulfillment of the Tribunal’s mandate to bring to justice the most senior persons alleged to be most responsible for war crimes in the Yugoslav conflicts,” the court says in a statement.

Overdue!

  1. moss says:

In Central Europe, this is as significant as the capture of Bin Laden would be in the U.S..

Watching coverage on DW-TV, thousands of people were in the streets celebrating. Sadly, there may have been as many – in some locales – plotting his defense. The history of the Balkans.

  2. brixi says:

There is nothing about his new “alternative” life. He managed to stay undetected and live as D.D. David in Belgrade and even lead a public life!

Here is few photos of him, the page is in Croatian:

Not a day too early. Well, next in line: Ratko Mladić

  4. edwinrogers says:

It co-incided with the appointment of a new Bosnian head of security. Karadzik ran out of friends.

  5. livvidd says:

He ran out of money, was unable to keep up with hush, hush payments.

  6. Chris Mac says:

So who’s got the job of killing muslims now?

  7. edwinrogers says:

    #6. That’s being outsourced.

  8. NeverAgain says:

According to the BBC WWorld Service this morning, Karadzic’s new identity and whereabouts were widely known. In fact, in the late 1990s (1996 I think) the same BBC reporter tried to interview him, and got as far as his street. The entire episode was taped, at the time, and played on the BBC today.

All the reporter had to do to find Karadzic was ask around town – everyone knew where he was and had no problem talking about him – on tape.

On Karadzic’s street, he was stopped by uniformed police and asked what he wanted. He said that wanted to interview Karadzic. A policeman was dispatched to Karadzic to ask permission, but it was denied. The reporter was then asked to leave the area, which he did.

What I got from this was:
    – Since they want to get into the EU, and they have to show that they follow the rule of law, they had to stop protecting their mass murderer.
    – The EU will keep turning a blind eye to realities of who they are dealing with.
    – None of the lessons of history will be learned.
    – At some point, there being no punishment or even re-education, history will repeat itself.

What is the EU’s motive for turning a blind eye to genocide?

Why did the world accept the new name for genocide – “ethnic cleansing” – instead of insisting that the correct name – GENOCIDE – be used.

Ethnic cleansing, indeed! As if any ethnic group can, by definition, need “cleansing”!

They were Muslims. I’m a Jew. Neither fact matters.

  9. Ron Larson says:

When I was living over in Australia I ran into a few Serbs who hate America with an intense passion. The fact that Clinton bombed them to stop their little genocide project just infuriates them to no end. I’ve never met a group of more closed minded people in my life.

Honest to god, they can’t explain what the hell the whole damn war was about. Yet they defend it to their last breath. Just because something happened somewhere hundreds of years ago, that is justification for genocide.

I honestly believe that they aren’t done yet, and if we turn our backs on them they will start up again.

  10. Said says:

A good butcher is hard to find. He could come here and work for for one of the large grocery chains. There are plenty of muslims here for him to kill.

  11. MikeN says:

So will he end up committing suicide after the war crimes tribunal fails to make their case?

Reminds me of the Vietnam war. How many American could explain it lucidly now?

Yet five or so million people were killed.

The futility of war is one reason I’m a pacifist.

  13. ChrisMac says:

    #11 – Probably before.

  14. Uncle Patso says:

It seems that part of the world has long been one of the most consistently murderous places, for centuries and centuries. Even in popular culture, I’ve seen comics set there, 1950s mysteries, etc., and they’re all filled with almost casual murder. Of course, this all pales in comparison to the multiple massacres that took place after the dissolution of Yugoslavia.

I think Trudeau nailed it with this bit of dialog from Doonesbury:

Iraqi Army guy: “Ah yes, I know this man. He is a bad evil man.”
American: “Well, we have orders to take him alive”
Iraqi: “I cannot do that. I have sworn vengeance. One of his family killed one of my family”.
American: “When did this happen ?”
    Iraqi: “1392”
American: “What is WRONG with you people?”

Which only shows that such behavior is not limited to the Balkans.

    Sigh.

  15. JPV says:

How many Iraqi deaths was he responsible for?

    400k?

    500k?

    600K?

    Oops. Sorry… wrong war criminal.

  16. JPV says:

You must never have been to America.

Honest to god, they can’t explain what the hell the whole damn war was about. Yet they defend it to their last breath. Just because something happened somewhere hundreds of years ago, that is justification for genocide.

Hmmm, strange. It sounds like you’ve been to America.

  17. ChrisMac says:

Australia is worse than the usa when it come to xenophobia.

For instance.. Try emigrating there if you have diabetes.

  18. brixi says:

Another tidbit: he was captured while going on vacation to Split. What a spoiler.

  19. quo says:

Dear fellow Americans, Brits and Australians, I believed you started to recognize the bran washing the politicians and media do during the WMD years.

The Iraq manipulation was only the tip of the iceberg carefully polished during nineties. A lot of people built their careers exactly by inventing “the butcher of Balkans” phrases etc.

    The facts are:

    – Al Quaeda fighters fought on Muslim (and U.S.) side, against Serbs in Bosnia and in Kosovo.

    – The biggest “cleansing” done during these wars was done by Croats with the U.S. support: 600.000 people were permanently expelled from Croatia at once. Serbs.

    – The “concentration camp operated by Serbs” pictures were fake.

I can continue, but even this is probably too much for you. Maybe somebody still gets inspired to research a little.

If you want to post such obvious drivel and claim its veracity, please give us some references. I currently have no plans to start researching something I currently believe is bullshit without something stronger than your statement.

  23. brixi says:

    #19, quote:

    The facts are:

    – Al Quaeda fighters fought on Muslim (supported by U.S, remember Hillary and Chelsea “action”) side, against Serbs in Bosnia and in Kosovo.

    *** True

    – The biggest “cleansing” done during these wars was done by Croats with the U.S. support: 600.000 people were permanently expelled from Croatia at once. Serbs.

*** False, They went on their own.

    – The “concentration camp operated by Serbs” pictures were fake.

*** False. I know some people who were there.

I can continue, but even this is probably too much for you. Maybe somebody still gets inspired to research a little.

    *** Research some more.

  24. quo says:

    >> Al Quaeda fighters fought on Muslim (supported by U.S. (…) side, against Serbs in Bosnia and in Kosovo.
    > True

    And for Mr. Fusion:

    Just google for

    Al Qaeda Bosnia

    >> 600.000 people were permanently expelled from Croatia at once
    > False, They went on their own.

… On their own in front of the enormous movements of Croatian army. Those who stayed (mostly very old people) were shot by Croats. Search for Operation Storm.

    >> The “concentration camp operated by Serbs” pictures were fake.
    > False. I know some people who were there.

What I know is that Bernard Kouchner in his book “Les guerriers de la paix” describes his talk with Alija Izetbegovic (Muslim Bosnian leader) where Kouchner asks: “why did you claim there are concentration camps, we checked, these were ugly prisons but there was no any trace of any systematic torture” and Izetbegovic answers “it’s true but I did it to make the west bomb Serbs more”.

  25. Herewegoagain says:

The Serbs and Croats are birds of a feather.

Just look at their activities in World War Two. They have learned nothing from history.

Any reason to continue the mass murder, and wouldn’t think of striving for peace.

    They deserve each other.

I wonder, though – don’t they love their children enough to stop the madness?

  26. Mr. Fusion says:

    #24, Quo,

    And for Mr. Fusion:
    Just google for
    Al Qaeda Bosnia

Your answer is bullshit. Al Quada was never in Bosnia nor Kosovo. Even if they had of been, that would not excuse the atrocities committed by the Serbs.

Not every Serb is a murderer. Every single one that contributed though, by active participation, supporting the murders, and even just hiding the guilty, deserve to be punished. Genocide can never be tolerated again.

As soon as someone posts bullshit like this and then turns around and challenges the reader to “google it”, I know it is bullshit. Simply because there are no acceptable references .

  27. brixi says:

    #26, Mr. Fusion

    Al Qaeda was/is in Bosnia.
My best freinds father was ritauly murdered by Al Qaeda members from Middle East in Travnik in 1992. If you weren’t there, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

    #27. brixi

Please provide a link to some reputable source that says there were al Quada in Bosnia. Until then, this is bullshit designed to deflect criticism away from Serbian atrocities.
