There’s a time and place for maintaining traditional architecture. It should halt short of condemning a city to being another Disneyland Frontier Town. I have some small experience with historic review panels and in general they’re about as interested in quality of design as GM.

China is a world center for avant garde and free thinking architecture, right now. For native as well as visiting talent. If anything, it’s one of the very few places to look to see what’s new and exciting.

They’re all outside the U.S., unfortunately.

I’ve been to Beijing, and I’ve been to Shanghai. It’s interesting to compare the two cities. In Shanghai, despite the enormous new towers of offices and condominiums, the city still seems the right “size”. While Beijing, like many capitol cities, has gone to extremes of scale – every building has enormous arches or entrances, surrounded by gigantic open areas of concrete and glass.

In Shanghai, they’ve built a massive freeway system, but it’s elevated, so it’s still possible to be a pedestrian on the smaller surface streets (just look out for cars, which ignore all traffic laws!)

In Beijing, every main street seems to be an 8-lane highway, impossible to cross safely so they’ve built massive pedestrian overpasses which completely separate you from the city.

I also have the same opinion as Chuck. Beijing is nice, but I like Shanghai better because in some places they have maintained the original look and feel of “Classic China”. If I were to live in China, I’d pick Shanghai.

Most of the new high-rises in Beijing are nice, some are garish, but all of it comes at the expense of the old culture.

By the way, look at the video again – this time just observing the air, specially in the 2nd half of the video.

  4. Wow…great to see China grow by leaps and bounds. One of the first signs of a country’s progress is it’s changing sky-line. A lot of Western influence though..
