ABC News: How to Buy a Child in 10 Hours

By 4:45 p.m., I’m poolside at one of [Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s] few upscale hotels. I’m wearing a hidden camera built into the strap of a bike messenger-style bag that’s around my neck. There’s another hidden camera in a leather satchel on the table, right next to the fruit plate and Evian water.
[…]
He says he’s a former member of parliament and that he has connections. In broad daylight, with hotel waiters walking by, he doesn’t even flinch when I make a horrific request.

“If I would like to get a child to live with me and take care of me,” I ask. “Could you do that?”

“Yes,” he says. “I can.”
[…]
“And this is OK?” I ask. “I won’t have any trouble from their parents or anything like that?”

“No, you won’t have any problems with their parents.”

“Why not?”

“When I give you the child, I will train it for you.”

I’m not exactly sure what that means.
[…]
And there it is. It’s about 5 p.m. Roughly 10 hours after leaving my office in New York City, I have successfully negotiated to buy another human being — an 11-year-old girl, whose value is set at just $150.

If they believe that, then I know the wife an a slain Nigerian government official who has $6 million hidden in a bank account and needs your help getting it out.

In other words, I think this “arranger” is far better at separating idiots from their money then kids from their parents.

  2. wbskeet37 says:

I watched this last night on “Nightline” and while I watched the scene that is described I thought they could have been pulling his leg. But then he is overheard by a couple of waiters that offer him the same thing but cheeper. While possible that he was a rube I tend to believe the story.

Also, after watching the whole story there is a large population on children sold into slavery in Haiti that are born in the “country” and sold, or given up into slavery.

  3. bobbo says:

#1–Ron==have you ever been around world class poverty? Parents too poor to feed their kids? The parents here gave their kid away for free (for various reasons) so the overhead was zip. $150 seemed cheap to me as well, but if you can’t trust “a former member of parliament” who can you trust?

It can be a very harsh world in many places. The Wests poorest country sets the low mark.

    A short history here: Haiti—Root-Cause-Of-Poverty

  4. Ah_Yea says:

Sorry Ron, you’ve missed this one.

One of my very best friends is a Haitian, and he’s one of the smartest guys I know. Talking about languages from another thread, he can converse in 4 and read and write 6.

He also has confirmed that this very thing – and much, much worse – is a daily event in Haiti.

In my own life, I lived for a few month in St. Thomas, and when I was leaving I literally had mothers begging me to take their son/daughter away to the states.

The EXACT same thing. Just take them and put them in school. Let them work off the payments. It breaks your heart.

  5. debegray says:

I’m sure it’s comforting to believe that this is just a scam, but in poorer countries life is much cheaper than it is here. Even if this guy was a con artist, there are scores of people around the world willing to sell you a child slave.

  6. stuartg says:

Human trafficking goes on every day within the United States, although not usually in such blatant form. Check out this site for info.

  7. morram says:

“When I give you the child, I will train it for you.”

Hey wait a second, is that included or do I have to pay extra?

  8. Hmeyers says:

    You silly fucks!

Hey, I can say that because it’s in the blog entry.

  9. Ron Larson says:

Actually, I used to live in Haiti back in the mid 70’s. It was super poor back then. I saw some mind blowing weird stuff then, and I know it hasn’t gotten any better.

I have no doubt that one could buy a child. But not at those terms ($150 from a pool side chase lounge like you were ordering a drink). The buyer would find himself being strung along as a series of “problems” unfold, each requiring a little more money, until he finds himself out hundreds or thousands of dollars out of pocket and no closer to closing his deal.

In fact, the buyer has it bass-ackwards. He could actually earn money offering to take a child with him to the US. I lost count of how many Haitians we met who would have given us everything just to slip aboard our boat and be released within swimming distance of Florida.

  10. FRAGaLOT says:

what really bothers me is how he refers to the child as an “it.”

  11. cranky pants says:

Oh my fuckin’ God. It is so cool that everyone can say “fuck” on here. It makes me feel so fuckin’ grown up to type “fuck”. Mr. Mustard is my hero because he types fuck more than anyone else on this blog, what a real fuckin’ man! Everyone needs a fuckin’ Uncle that can say fuck on a blog.

  12. Benny Bomarang says:

Actually you can get a couple of its for a few hundred dollars in a lot of countries. In many Asian coutries the white men are buying young boys and I don’t believe it’s for cleaning. In Africa the boys and girls cost about the same unless the girl has those tiny breasts (they call them Hershey Kisses) that’ll add 10 to 20%. In the middle east you’ll have to trade. Since a lot of stuff is off limits there you can usually get a little burka banger for a couple of decent kiddy porn mags or DVDs else any homo materials are good for deal. One place to look out for is Mexico. You think you’re getting a little boy or girl then the next thing you know the entire family is moving in and they drink all your beer and sleep all day

Dateline NBC will be right over.

  14. SJP says:

    F*$k. F(@K. F!c&. %uc9.

(Sorry Cranky Pants, I just couldn’t.)

  15. Improbus says:

People, don’t forget to spay or neuter your “pets”.

  16. Angel H. Wong says:

    R. Kelly gets frequent client discounts.

  17. homer says:

This is just one manifestation of the unimaginable degradation and suffering a substantial portion of this planet suffers on an hourly basis. It’s truly heartbreaking to realize that there are others eager & willing to exploit and aggravate the suffering of others. This is one example that I think would bring even atheists to the table on the “special place in hell” for these animals.

  18. Ah_Yea says:

Yes, Homer. It is truly staggering. I do hope that there is a special place in Hell for those who hurt others like this.
