The United States leads the world in rates of experimenting with marijuana and cocaine despite strict drug laws, say World Health Organization researchers.

Countries with looser drug laws have lower rates of abuse, the researchers report in the Public Library of Science journal, PLoS Medicine.

The survey of 54,000 people in 17 countries found that 16 percent of people in the United States had used cocaine in their lifetimes — far higher than the next highest rate, found in New Zealand, where 4.3 percent of people reported having used cocaine.

More than 42 percent of Americans admitted to having tried cannabis, closely followed by 41 percent in New Zealand.

Americans were also the most likely to have smoked, with 74 percent saying they used tobacco at some time in their lives, although current smoking rates are far lower at 21 percent.

Feels great to be in first place, doesn’t it?

  1. Mister Mayonnaise says:

Once again, the solution is easy. Stay away from drugs folks, only do mayonnaise. Pure, white, creamy, it’s the number one USA goodness substance!

  2. digdan says:

I think the word “abuse” means something that is harmful. Show me any drugs on http://www.drug-rehabs.org that are helpful and I’ll show you were you are wrong.

  3. bobbo says:

#41–digdan==did you even think in passing to look at a dictionary before you made up your own definition? Are all your opinions so self referential?

abuse: improper or excessive use or treatment

    as in===ANYTHING CAN BE ABUSED.

Like mayonaise, aka, heart attack in a spoon. A light spread==wonderful. A heavy dollop in the macaroni salad?==too much. Same with drugs.

Get objective about the health of your brain==get and use a dictionary.

  4. Rick Cain says:

The USA has a bad habit of blaming others for its own bad habits.

Thats the typical mindset of a child, do something wrong, blame others for it. We are a childish society.

  5. Glenn E. says:

Perhaps these other countries can afford to have “looser” drug abuse laws because they also have some form of universal health care to fix the problem. Not to mention, better education to prevent the abuse in the first place. In the US it seems to be assumed that educating the young not to smoke or do drugs, might hurt the legal sales of tobacco and alcohol in their adult lives. And we can’t have none of that, now can we? Not to mention all the other slimey things kids aren’t told about, until they’re taken. Like bad subprime morgage loans. Or gambling for large stakes, or just too often.

    39,
THEN YOU BELIEVE everything YOU READ AND ARE TOLD…??

Good..your toilet is nade of gold…SELL IT, MAKE MONEY..

    40,
the current food drug, is Milk and cheese..Its in EVERYTHING…

    41.
“Marijuana addiction is a very serious and sometimes life threatening dilemma.”

i dont see tobacco up there, and its a stronger addiction them MJ…

    43,
    GOOD POINT..
    Addiction ISNT always harmful..
ask those with SEX addiction. love it or leave it.

And even MOST drugs, if taken properly and Sparingly…work better, and have a better affect.
And MANY of those NATURAL based drugs are MUCH nicer to the body then those CREATED by man and modified to be stronger.

  7. Don’t let the stress of family and work or their despair of substance abuse ruin your life.

    46,
    OK..
    lets do it this way.
Iv read enough, programmed enough, to know that many things are hidden from the current populace.
    have you??

Lets compare the OLD sci kits with the NEW ones..
You have lost about 3/4 of the chemicals..
Then they dont tell you WHAT does what, and why you cant have it.
Why not TRY and find a HOW TO, that explains Duct work, and why that $100 thermostat Isnt much better then the cheap one.
I want to find a full electrical manual on installing in homes.

PS. you cant use the web.

    PRETTY MUCH…YUP.

    # 33 Now, care to explain one more time why making illegal drugs readily available would make things better?

UMMM… READ THE FIRST TWO PARAGRAPHS OF THE LEAD QUOTE… THE WHOLE REASON THIS THREAD STARTED…

AND I NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT READY AVAILABILITY, THAT WAS YOUR ASSUMPTION. LOOSER DRUG LAWS DO NOT MEAN THAT IT IS EASY, OR LEGAL, TO GET ALL DRUGS – MERELY THAT THE SOCIETAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS THEM CHANGES DUE TO SOME OF THE REASONS ALREADY MENTIONED AND AS SUCH THERE IS LESS INTEREST – THOSE WHOLE REALLY WANT TO EXPERIMENT WLL DO SO NO MATTER WHAT – A PROVEN BY THE US BEING NO 1.

  11. ANNOYED says:

    # 45 No, I read, get educated & think for myself. The scintific method is a very good tool, read about it.

The scientific (it has an e) method is pretty good – it allows one to remove the data from the surrounding annoyances, such as CAPITALISATION andview that data in an emotionally detached manner – IE not dismiss the concept because it was written in capitals…

That said, I have no idea what #45 in on about – maybe he watches too many Sci-Fi Movies..
