The Times newspaper on Monday quoted examiner Peter Buckroyd as saying he gave the student — who wrote “Fuck off” — two points out of a possible 27 for the English paper.
“It would be wicked to give it zero because it does show some very basic skills we are looking for, like conveying some meaning and some spelling,” Buckroyd was quoted as saying.
He would have received a slightly higher grade with punctuation.
Stupid but hardly surprising. Most people in the UK seem incapable of saying (let alone writing) anything else these days.
He still failed, so what’s the big deal?
The examiner is quoted as saying that “It’s better than someone that doesn’t write anything at all.” Whatever happened to “If you can’t say something nice, then don’t say anything at all”?
Reminds me of a question I would ask students on the test for Catcher in the Rye—-Using the direct form of address, tell your teacher what Holden saw written on the wall of his sister’s school that made him upset.
Pedro’s right. It’s like tipping the waiter 10 cents.
I’d have given him -10 for the use of vulgar language and not addressing the topic in any way but that’s me.
Okay maybe 2 points gets the same message across. I just don’t think he deserved that much credit.
It is more than slightly obvious that passing the test wasn’t one of the student’s objectives.
Of course this kid might have been one of those that avoids being a failure by not trying.
I mean if you have very limited academic ability and some idiot keeps insisting you can do things that you just can’t wrap your brain around sooner or later you can be expected to get a bad attitude.
Of course some people don’t have that excuse.
If he’d written “F*ck off, moran!”, would they have deducted 1 point for spelling? Or given him 1 more point for making a political statement?
Can someone explain this for us in the USA? I gather from the article that this wasn’t just some ordinary test because there is some sort of board that grades this test rather than just the teacher? Is it a test required to graduate or pass a class or something?
If one of my students wrote that I wouldn’t give any points (Of course it would depend on the question and if there was any way possible that the answer would make any sense or not). However, whenever possible I try to give my students a point or two for at least trying.
Hmmm.. 25 more words, he could have aced that question..
