The team was stripped of three gold medals and sent home following positive drugs tests at the Sydney Games in 2000.

It’s all about being able to avoid being caught. Soviet Union were masters on hiding it, so where the USA (you must be kidding yourself if you think that Florence Griffith-Joyner, Carl Lewis et al were running clean), DDR, Bulgaria etc. It’s more of a competition between the scientists than anything else.
