Austrian footballer might score beer for life

A Vienna brewery is promising a lifelong supply of free beer to any Austria player who scores a goal for the co-hosts in their remaining Euro 2008 group matches against Poland and Germany.

Austria, competing in the finals of the tournament for the first time, made a disappointing start with a 1-0 defeat against Croatia on Sunday.

“Maybe this is the kind of motivation that will give them the last kick our team needs to be successful,” Ottakringer Brauerei AG chief executive Sigi Menz said in a statement, adding he would personally deliver the brewers’s supply for the first year.

Austria is ranked 92nd in the world and “qualified” for the tournament because they’re one of the two host countries.

One of their better players, Paul Scharner (above) isn’t there because Austrian FA suits think he’s a disturbing influence.

    Very short sighted award–doesn’t the brewery want to win a goal next year as well?

    When I moved to my current location, there was a brew-pub 1 mile away. They have a “beer club” where you pay $250 and for one year you can come in and get one free beer of your choice, limit one per day.

    So, I didn’t miss too many days, but even walking both ways, I gained 40 pounds. Maybe an actual athlete who cares would have more control, or more exercise?

    I quit after the one year. Some rewards aren’t worth the indulgence.

    Reminds me of the Canadian hosers on Canadian tv who planned extensively to feed a mouse in an empty beer bottle in an effort to obtain free Labatts blue for life
    Talk about a transportation issue

    Unbelievable. 3rd minute of stoppage time with Poland thoroughly in control of a 1 – 0 victory, and a Pole gets caught shirt-pulling in the box on a free kick.

    Howard Webb awards a penalty kick and Vascic, the oldest player in the tournament puts the ball past Arthur Boruc.

    1 – 1 final score. Vascic gets the beer!
