Say anything against her and it is a hate crime!

Internet Warrior Rallies Women to Support Al Qaeda – NYTimes.com — More evidence to show how insane they are in the EU. This is like having Tokyo Rose during WWII living in and broadcasting from NYC. Since the local Muslims have failed to shut up this idiot, they must all be agreeing with her.

Malika El Aroud, seen in her living room in Brussels, has become one of the most prominent Internet jihadists in Europe.

In her living room, Ms. El Aroud, a 48-year-old Belgian, wears the ordinary look of middle age: a plain black T-shirt and pants and curly brown hair. The only adornment is a pair of powder-blue slippers monogrammed in gold with the letters SEXY.

But it is on the Internet where Ms. El Aroud has distinguished herself. Writing in French under the name “Oum Obeyda,” she has transformed herself into one of the most prominent Internet jihadists in Europe.

She calls herself a female holy warrior for Al Qaeda. She insists that she does not disseminate instructions on bomb-making and has no intention of taking up arms herself. Rather, she browbeats Muslim men to go and fight and rallies women to join the cause.

Seen from another point of view:

I like the bit about the husband being *away*. She probably knocked him off because he tried to shut her up.

Or he could no longer take the repeated emasculation at the hands of a blow hard wife 😉
and decided it was either blow himself up or disappear somewhere nice and peaceful like Iraq…

  2. eblonk says:

Woah, John. Americans have failed to shut up GWB, twice. Or the religious right. If ‘failing to shut up’ constitutes agreeing, I’ll have to quit my dayjob and I’ll have to shut up a lot of people. I so far failed to shut up Geert Wilders (our favorite Dutch anti-whatever-he-thinks-most-people-will-be-against aka populist) and I don’t care to. Doesn’t mean I agree with him. Please tell me I misread that statement.

  3. deowll says:

    1) If she were in Saudia they’d beat the crap out of her for the way she dresses and running around without a vail.

    2) I loath people that encourage others to go out and get killed while they live a comfortable life.

    3) This is an example of why democratic nations should think twice before letting the followers of Allah into their nations. What she wants is the freedom to preach holy war against her hosts.

  4. the answer says:

I love how she wants to fight for these jihadists, but won’t were the sub-human burka or follow any of their laws. Do as I say not as I do

  5. internet_guy says:

John – I found your link on the popular tweeters and was going to add you to my tweeter …but reading

“Since the local Muslims have failed to shut up this idiot, they must all be agreeing with her”

just makes it obvious you’re no enlightened blogger/reporter. Your loss.

  6. eblonk says:

“This is an example of why democratic nations should think twice before letting the followers of Allah into their nations.”

Europe has made the mistake of letting followers of Jesus in and the conversion has caused a lot of death. Just check history on how Europe was brought under Christian rule, especially but not exclusively Charlemagne.
Yes, it’s a long time ago but as Europe is still basically Christian, the consequences are still there, so the argument is valid and so is the example. Europe has not been itself the last 1500 years, having been turned into the playground of the dumb (and then a few of us crossed the Atlantic, bad idea).
Oh, and if you argued that it turned out well, don’t worry because eventually the supposed Islamisation of Europe will come and go just like the Christianisation. Here we go again.

  7. Ah_Yea says:

Muslim, I respect that you are going to defend your point of view, and I highly suggest you keep doing that. It is respectable to stand up for yourself, and this blog certainly needs a Muslim defender.

After all, this blog is about debate and it’s hard to debate unless all sides are represented.

Having said that, my question in #18 is still entirely unanswered.

“So, what would happen if she were in Saudi Arabia or Iran and was trying to enlist Christian crusaders to fight against Islam?”

  8. Yves says:

    John,

What the bunghole were you thinking when you put this in you daily news overview? An American blaming a country as small as ours for what? In the article they mention police is keeping an eye on her and she is sure they’re monitoring her every move on the net. What, you want them to arrest her, throw her in jail without sufficient proof and have her be free in 2 days. She’ll just use that later on when they might have enough proof, as a counter measure. Have you ever (or the NJT for that matter) printed a story about AlQaeda or other terrorists that were arrested, organizations uncovered, etc. by Belgian police? I didn’t think so …

I can’t get my head around stuff like this, it’s textbook hypocriticism. It’s got something to do with AlQaeda, and americans jump on this like “look what those assholes are doing to AlQaeda militants, while we’ve had to suffer all those losses … why don’t they do as we do?”
Don’t get me wrong 9/11 was absolutely terrible (even i lost an uncle who was a tourist in NY at the time), but so is the the war on terror!

It’s stuff like this that shows why even those who oppose to GWB, actually fully support his ways of thinking and the actions brought forth by that. To use your own words against you “Since the local Muslims have failed to shut up this idiot, they must all be agreeing with her” Change “Local Muslims” to “Americans” and the last “her” by “GWB” and we’ve got a tie.

Don’t get me wrong terrorist organizations should be annihilated, but look at what’s happening in your own country before passing judgement on others please. It’s just so silly for a paper like the NJT to run such a story while there probably are 100’s of known militants in the US or all over the world of which authorities know perfectly well what they are doing.

And for a literate person like yourself it would be nice to refer to European countries by their name, not just the generic “EU”. It’s bad enough that most of you don’t even know the EU is not a country, and Brussels is a capital, not a country.

I hadn’t expected something like this from you, to be honest.

    Sincerely,
    Yves from Belgium

  9. MikeN says:

John, why the double standard on free speech?

  10. Sea Lawyer says:

#38, Freedom of speech is referring to freedom from government infringement, not a community policing its own.

  11. MikeN says:

    #39,
More evidence to show how insane they are in the EU. This is like having Tokyo Rose during WWII living in and broadcasting from NYC.

Sounds like he is calling for deportation or imprisonment. When George Bush does it, it’s bashed, but for Europe it’s OK?

  12. Mr. Catshit says:

    #29, Moneyrunner,

I wonder if those people have any sense of history and have heard of “Lord Haw-Haw” and Tokyo Rose.

Bad analogy. They were active participants against the Allies in a declared war. Their conduct was treasonous. El Aroud is not living in, nor is she actively campaigning against, a specific country during wartime. Maybe that difference is too subtle for you, but for any civil libertarian it is an important distinction.

The freedom Belgium gives her to speak her mind while the mighty nimrods around here suggest otherwise is why the US ranks so much lower on the Worldwide Press Freedom Rankings. Belgium ranks at #5 while the US is at #48. Maybe we should envy Belgium and its freedoms.

  13. whit says:

    >why the US ranks so much lower on the Worldwide Press Freedom Rankings. Belgium ranks at #5 while the US is at #48. Maybe we should envy Belgium and its freedoms.

Didn’t we all envy Belgium in 1940 (oh what a coincidence)

    Belgium surrenders to Germany,

  14. bobsyeruncle says:

I can’t believe the discussion has deteriorated into one about “free speech” and no one has addressed the REAL issue.

“What color panties is she wearing?”

  15. no religion says:

So? What about nutcases like Hagee, and Falwell (whom I hope arrived in the hell he believed in) who call for destruction and death of other religions and regions? Falwell and the Westboro Baptist Church wraiths even reveled in the idea of the US itself being destroyed! I don’t see the US gov’t doing anything about them.

This looks like totally overblown xenophobia, the kind for which DU and the US in general is becoming very well-known.

  16. sai Kai Lee says:

Keep in mind that I am not talking about her specifically, but people like that really make me sick.

    SKL

  17. muslim says:

    Ah_Yeah.
Thanks for the invite. I had few of reasons for not being too active on this blog:
    1. Some of my lengthy replies did not get posted in the past-thats very discouraging.
    2. You implied “you believe what you are programmed to believe” : )
    3. I don’t get to sit in front of my computer as my profession is far from it. May be when I get iphone I will. (Pedro, have you trademarked the word Oy!phone already?)
Finally to answer your question: I have no idea what they would do to her. And you would not know what would happen to her in either country if she did that. We can assume and imagine and believe something but it is not for sure, isn’t it? I have not been to any of those countries. You can only make an assumption based on what you heard only.
And don’t you think there are people already doing what you described-calling for christian crusades whilst living in muslim countries? I am not saying there are, because I do not know, but just because we don’t read about them on some blog does not mean there aren’t. I like #38’s explanation in this regard.
Boru-#23. You say you have muslim friends, thats nice. But do they explain to you why they are muslim? If they have not invited you to Islam, they do not think you are their true friend and they are not doing you any good.

Muslim women can wear anything they want at home; Gucci, Versace, Walmart, JCPenny, Gap, Dolce&Gabbana,Express, Custom Hand sewn, arabic, japanese, korean, indian, somalian, african, american, silk, gold, jeans, corduroy, thick, thin, long, short, tight, loose, red, white, black, fur, leather, feather, cheap or expensive… Only requirement is when you go out and there are people who are not your immediate family -cover your beauty.
    Thanks for listening.

    Belgium surrenders to Germany,

Hmmm, Belgium is neutral and has a population of around 5 million. Germany is aggressive, prepared for war, and has a population of 60 million people. Germany attacks Belgium and quickly overwhelms them.

OK, so what is your point?

  19. Ultraslug says:

Can anyone (“muslim”?) point me to some anti-al Qaeda web sites that denounce it and its supporters? A trite dismissal is not enough. I’m looking for a sound, theological rebuttal of the Al Qaeda exegesis, based on Islamic tradition and scholarship.

I believe we’ve had only one major Muslim group (in Spain?) pronounce takfir on bin Laden(formally declare he’s not a Muslim). It makes you wonder if what he’s doing and saying is really un-Islamic.

  20. Rick Cain says:

Islam is incompatible with western values. That is the problem in a nutshell.

  21. Mr. Catshit says:

    #49, Ultra,

Can anyone point out a Christian site where the right wing nut evangelical extreme nut jobs get called out?

Religion is extremely limited in bettering society. Extreme religion is a detriment.
