Yeah, killing machines are so beautiful.

Here’s some photos of the “beautiful” work that these machines do…

    Yeah, baby.

  5. GetSmart says:

These are French Mirage II aircraft. Belongs to a government too smart to get involved in Iraq.

  7. ZARk says:

Yes, it’s footage from LES CHEVALIERS DU CIEL

    best plane movie EVER

music by Chris Corner off course. (I am x, robots in disguise, … )

really recommended to anyone, i’ve seen the movie like 20times, it’s really good.

  8. Constantine says:

Actually the planes shown are Dassault Mirage 2000 and Dassault/Dornier Alpha Jet.

For more information about Les Chevaliers du ciel visit http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0421974/

It’s a great movie for plane lovers.

  9. dwerg85 says:

So what was that song anyways? And chevaliers du ciel kicks mayor ass. Deserves way more that that 5 on imdb.

  10. Miguel says:

While I don’t agree that ‘Chevaliers du Ciel’ is an excellent movie, I agree it’s EXCELLENT entertainment. Watch it on a big screen with stereo sound, it’s worth it.

This video is wonderful, and proves that poetry isn’t just written or painted, it can be done with metal and fire!

I disagree these are just killing machines. They ARE used for that, but by men’s fault. *These particular airplanes* probably were never involved in combat (I don’t know). Let’s keem them that way.

  11. bobbo says:

#10–Miguel==what is it about “fighter aircraft” that eludes you?

Beauty is an abstract concept related to nothing else. Poets like to tell us otherwise, but this video shows any relationship to be purely coincidental.

  12. Miguel says:

#11 🙂 The part that these ‘fighters’ rarely or never fight! Take for example my country, Portugal. We have some Alphajets, some F-16s, etc. Fierce looking ‘fighters’. Well, they never, EVER, fought. And they never will. Most air forces in Europe are just for show. Governments spend money on their military-industrial complexes just to keep the military happy and quiet. Maybe the US could learn something from them 😉

  13. bobbo says:

#12–Miguel==yes, true, when a fighter aircraft is down for maintainance if is not fighting and killing. When they “never” fight and are used as only a threat of retaliation or defense they are not fighting and killing===but I was more focused on your point that when used for fighting and killing that somehow that was not beautiful as well ((for those of that bent)) OR more acceptably that they are used for fighting and killing “only by men’s fault.” Fighter aircraft are designed for maximum fighting and killing. These are not statues of David that are thrown off cliffs to crush people.

So–fighter aircraft are at least beautiful in flight. I say: “Beauty is truth, and truth beauty. That is all you know and all ye need to know.” (Paraphrased from Yeats, Ode to a Grecian Urn) ==is wrong, but a popular concept in Western Culture as posted by #1 JPV and echoed by yourself.

Again, beauty is an abstract concept having no relationship to anything else. Much like Portugal spending money on defense. What have you got to fear?–the Spanish Inquisition?

  14. bobbo says:

BTW—Monty Phythons “The Spanish Inquisition” is on BBC_TV (Comcast Channel 162 here in California) today at 3:20 PM PST. One of their best I think.

  15. Mister Mustard says:

Bobbo! Go buy a grille or patio set. It’s Memorial Day! Sheesh! Grill up some bison.

  16. Miguel says:

#13 🙂 Well, I was just trying to look at things on the bright side. Yes, fighters are for killing, but not used for that in a nice backwater place like my country 🙂

And yes, I question myself what the fighters (and submarines we have, maybe to torpedo Spanish illegal fishing ships) are for… As I say, to keep the military amused and quiet.

Ah, no, when the Pope comes to Portugal, they’re used for escort 😀

  17. MikieV says:

I used to enjoy these kinds of movies/videos when I was in my teens & 20s…

Now that I am a few months shy of hitting 50, and oil is at record prices, watching these kinds of movies only makes me think what a waste it is for all those jets to be going on full after-burner -just- because it looks cool to see that jet of blue flame out the back…

  18. Likes2LOL says:

#17 “…and oil is at record prices, watching these kinds of movies only makes me think what a waste it is…”

Yeah, and one helluva risk for a big repair bill if anybody made just a tiny mistake flying that close together.

#12: “So–fighter aircraft are at least beautiful in flight.”

What is even more beautiful in flight was detailed in an incredible show on PBS last year entitled, “Raptor Force.”
    http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/raptorforce/slideshow.html

Here’s part of what Discover magazine (www.discovermagazine.com/2007/feb/reviews) had to say about the show:

“Contrasting avian technology with the capabilities of military aircraft, Raptor Force could make even the Blue Angels jealous. The American F22A jet is nicknamed Raptor because it makes the sharpest turns of any fighter aircraft, but a peregrine falcon is far nimbler. Pulling out of a 250-mile-per-hour vertical dive, the bird experiences a g-force three times stronger than an Air Force pilot normally would. ‘If fighter pilots could choose their reincarnations, they would come back as falcons,’ the narrator concludes.”

#1 – Weaponry engineering is the coolest of cool fields to work in.
