I’ve been thinking a lot about mass transportation recently; I’m going to stop now. Can you imagine this happening in LA or New York? On second thought, cattle are treated better than this, at least until their destination.

  1. DocColorado says:

NO, I can’t imagine that people in LA would get out of their SUV’s and ride public transportation.

I also can’t imagine that Amtrak employees would help you get on the train either!

  2. bobbo says:

Homo sapiens get used to anything. I recall being at an overlook in Yosemite Park one day. Tour Bus drives up filled with Japanese Tourists. About 80 folks get off the bus in 10,000 acres of park===and they huddled together as if all connected by belt buckles. 2-3 teenagers left the group to take a picture of Half Dome, then went back to the protection of the group. The bus of course kept its motor on disturbing the peace of everyone else in the area.

  3. DocColorado says:

No, People in LA would NEVER get ouf their SUV’s to ride public transportation.

    and

Amtrak Employees would NEVER help you get on a train.

  4. McCullough says:

    Herd mentality, Japanese?

  5. And, I always feel like saying “moo” when getting into a crowded NYC subway train. This is far beyond anything in New York.

  6. blah blah blah says:

I was in the Philippines taking a boat from Cagayan de Oro City to Cebu City. When they open the gang plank to the boat, the rush of people to the walkway was more or less just like this rush to the train. I honestly couldn’t figure out why the rush to get on the boat like that… it was as if the boat was going to leave without them. The worst part for me was a woman pushing her way though the crowd (rather forcefully) while holding a baby in her arms.

With the theme of today seeming to be that of gas and alternative energy sources….

#2 – Unless we develop solid alternative energy sources for the individual vehicle owners they may not have a choice sooner than later.

I guess one way to avoid gas prices this weekend could just be to stand in line for no good reason.

I’ve been through Shinjuku station in the morning and packed into a train with the white glove “cattle car” loaders. Totally unreal. I would never have believed they could fit all those people into the car…but they did.

  9. dugger says:

What happens to women in Japan. Do they get groped during these packed trips? If so, how do they handle it?

Or are the Japanese more polite in tight quarters than the rest of the world?

  11. chuck says:

The video clear demonstrates that subsidized public transit simply doesn’t work.

The supply of public transit in Japan clearly cannot handle the demand of the users. So the law of supply and demand requires that either the amount of public transit be increased to meet the demand, or the price of public transit should be increased until demand goes down.

In my city, the public bus service introduced an “express” bus specifically to get students to the local university. It was a very popular option. The bus service had to cancel it because it was too popular – the government subsidy for each passenger exceeded what the government wanted to pay.

  12. rbitting says:

They DO get groped. I’ve seen it myself. Of course if the train is packed like in this video you’d be lucky to be able to move anything much less a hand. From what I saw it appeared that the lady didn’t do much complaining but the guy could have just said he was using her for support. Also the Japanese have some VERY explicit comic books they love to read on the train such that all can see.

  13. Sinn Fein says:

I doubt that any groping takes place at all on any of the passenger cars since everyone is too busy TRYING TO BREATH!

Golly, one extra car would be…like Heaven for them, but no chance.

  14. Personality says:

How easy would it be to pickpocket in that mess? They are afraid to commit crime there so it works, I guess.

  15. MotaMan says:

    Maximum Occupancy?

    Fire Marshall?

  16. Rowdy Yates says:

Could they play ~Rawhide~ in the background?-)

  17. Olo Baggins of Bywater says:

The video clear demonstrates that subsidized public transit simply doesn’t work.

Really? How does this video show that? I didn’t see anyone left behind. It appears to work extremely well.

  18. Freyar says:

Olo, check the video again at 01:01. It looked like someone got left behind to me.

Suffice to say that it is interesting how nobody suffocates, and how people actually get off at their stop.

  19. peter_m says:

#11. What the hell does that have to do with an over crowded public transit system?????

Regarding the video, I want to get something else off my chest: What the fuck??????

  20. Mister Mustard says:

    >>The video clear demonstrates that subsidized
    >>public transit simply doesn’t work.

Sure it does. Everyone got on the train. And if the Japanese really wanted to be “A students”, they would just run more trains. Nobody would be getting jammed into a cattle car if there were another train 2 minutes down the track.

More, not less, subsidized public transit is the anwswer.

  21. Mazinger says:

Well, I’ve seen that on Mexico City too, where they also have women and men riding on separate wagons on some routes. It seems groping became some kind of a problem for some passengers.

  22. jescott418 says:

Ok, is this not unsafe? I have seen things like this before. So I guess working on your laptop on the way home is out of the question?
I guess America is not the only ones who have a lack of proper infrastucture for the amount of people.Don’t be surprised if this thing happens in here someday.

  23. joaoPT says:

When I used to ride the bus here, happened the same for one reason only: There was always space at the back of the bus. People as soon as they get in, enter park mode. Sometimes, as the route took its course, there were even seated places available at the back, while there were people “hanging” in the front entrance.
The crowd intelligence is really the lowest common denominator…

  24. Raster says:

As some have related before: How is this *not* working? Looks like necessity to me.

Take every one of those passengers and put them into a car – now see if anything moves at all.

If anything it shows how lucky we are here, and yet still find time to complain.

  25. John Paradox says:

My mind just keeps jumping between “clown car” and the “Stateroom Scene” from the Marx Brothers.

    J/P=?

  26. FRAGaLOT says:

umm this is old. I thought maybe this video was going to be something out of the norm, but it wasn’t. We’ve been seeing these video footage of train passengers getting stuffed in for at least 50 years since the introduction of TV and film in Japan. Why are we acting like we’ve never seen this before?

  28. SN says:

“The crowd intelligence is really the lowest common denominator…”

It’s the same thing with supermarket checkout lanes in the US. The closest checkout lines will be filled with people, but I can walk 30 seconds to the other side of the store and go through a checkout without any wait. People are sheep.

  29. Mister Mustard says:

    Ugh.

  30. Miguel says:

Ach! Ze only zing missing are ze glorious SS soldiers guarding ze Jewish Schvine while zey are packed to go to Auschwitz! Sieg!
