IRS: Some stimulus checks sent to wrong accounts

Through the wonders of modern technology, some of those federal economic stimulus checks are being deposited directly into recipients’ bank accounts.

But some are not – and are instead winding up in the bank accounts of complete strangers.

“We do know of instances of problems; we’ve heard of situations where stimulus checks have gone to the wrong people’s bank accounts,” conceded Kevin McKeon, the Internal Revenue Service spokesman for the New York region. “We’re getting a lot of calls to the toll-free number.”

One local taxpayer, who asked not to be identified, reported that he had discovered an unexpected deposit of $1,800 in his bank account. He said a review of his bank records revealed that it was a deposit from the IRS bearing another taxpayer’s Social Security number. He said he contacted the IRS and was told by an agent that the deposit was one of 15,000 misrouted checks sent out incorrectly as a result of a computer programming glitch.

Should we start a poll to guess how many asshats who get ‘misdirected’ checks (gotta love that expression — my choice would be ‘fucked up’) think they can keep them and spend the money?

Those receiving misdirected IRS deposits must report the mistake to their bank, McKeon said. Similarly, paper checks sent to incorrect recipients must be mailed back to the IRS, he said, and any money spent before the recipient is aware of the mistake must be repaid.

The ACH system (used for direct deposit and e-checks) is so messed up. Even if someone sends the right account number, there are times a deposit can land in the wrong place. The banks are supposed to watch for that, but with millions of transactions going through daily, do you think they bother to check every name mismatch? It doesn’t help that so many people use the wrong names (nicknames or maiden names) and don’t tell the banks.

At least 50% of the blame falls on lazy bankers, not just the
    government.

Typical IRS “Its not our fault” bullshit. Having spanked the IRS in court before I can see why this Kevin McKeon, the Internal Revenue Service spokesman, has the attitude he does. Something very similar happened with me.

I did my taxes, sent them in with a check to pay what I owed. They “re-did” my taxes, decided I didn’t owe, sent me a letter to that affect, and sent me back what I sent them plus $1800. I was astounded and I knew they were wrong. They also never cashed my check so I was up 2x $$ +1800.

I waited. And waited. Three months later they send a certified letter explaining that I owe that years taxes plus interest plus penalties. I called them up and pointed out how it was all their own fault by changing my original tax form themselves, which they denied until I faxed them a copy of the letter they sent me as proof. I told the dumb ass who I had to talk to that all they are getting is what I owe plus the $1800 plus the what I owed they sent me (they never even realized the extra). That wasn’t good enough so I said fine see you in court, got my attorney and filed suit the next day before they could. Long story short I payed no penalties or interest and they paid for my attorney. I also have a permanent injunction from them ever changing my tax return again with out my prior approval, thank you judge, although I really have my doubts how valid that injunction is..
