Reading articles about storm-caused death and destruction around the U.S., this weekend, I happened upon this file photo. A few sources used it.

The closest I’ve come to a source is that the original photograph was taken at Lake Okeechobee in Florida – at least 20 years ago. Most versions have been over-enlarged. I’d love to see a clean large copy of the original.

    This is one of the oldest picture myths on the internet, and it appears with pretty much any significant tornado. Tom Grazulis at the Tornado Project, who I believe owns the rights to this picture, DOES mention it’s from Florida. He would likely have the information. Snopes points to Lake Okeechobee on June 15, 1991 as the origin of the picture.

    Chile’s ChaitĂ©n volcano erupting, sending up charged dust that “precipitates” as lightning.
