A tech-savvy White Plains woman whose apartment was burglarized solved the crime herself after she was able to log on to her stolen laptop, photograph one of the suspects with it and get photos of another.
Edmon Shahikian and Ian Frias were picked up at their homes after the victim turned the pictures over to police.
The victim, who works at The Apple Store in The Westchester mall, received a call from a friend asking her if she was online. She said no, and was told by her friend that his computer showed her as being logged onto the Internet. At that point, police said, the victim signed onto another computer and used the “Back to My Mac” program to determine that her stolen MacIntosh laptop indeed was signed onto the Web and that someone was using it to shop online. She then activated the stolen computer’s camera, allowing her to “see” what was in front of the laptop.
At first, police said, she saw only an empty chair. But a short time later, they said, she was able to photograph a man, Shahikian, sitting in front of her stolen laptop. The victim then was able to find photos of Frias using the computer after it had been stolen, police said.
She…contacted police, gave them the tell-tale photos, and the arrests were made a short time later.
A wonderful cautionary tale – for thieves who ain’t too smart, anyway.
Don’t anyone say another reason to buy a mac.
How come this post doesn’t have the BSometer on it!
Try doing THAT, Vistards.
Bravo to that woman!!
It just shows to go ya, even retarded fish-monkeys can get themselves online with a Mac!
🙂
Those punks were in the apartment several weeks earlier attending a “get-together” so no doubt they cased the apartment at that time. This is a good example of why it’s sometimes not a good idea to throw large parties in your apartment or home. You never know who’s there and what their motives might be.
A customer of mine had a similar experience in Dallas in 2000. Someone broke into his office (actually pulled the vault door off the walls with a big 4×4), cut the cables to two of his servers and walked out with them.
Four days later, his new computers were reporting that the two older ones were trying to log onto his system. He backtracked the offending IP to an ISP in Louisiana, they called the cops, and they got the guy within two hours trying to figure out how to make the computers browse the web (Dumb Ass).
The guy’s claim: “I bought them from a street dealer in Houston.” Yep, initial opinion correct — Dumb Ass.
BTW . . . it was MS Server 3.51 🙂
Yeah, no one would bother stealing a laptop loaded with Vista.
#9, good point. But even a Vista loaded computer can be wiped and have XP installed.
Give the victim credit. She used the tools in her computer to discover who stole it. She gave police sufficient information to recover it for her.
Wait….back to my mac actually works!? Coulda fooled me. I’ve been trying to get it to work since I upgraded to Leopard right when it came out.
#12 That’s why I say BS.
This is soooo PR it stinks…
#10 I’m surprised the police bothered with it at all. Most of the time they’ll tell you to just put a claim in with your insurance company.
